Founded in 2010, the Meran Burggräfler Winery was born from the merger of two long-established cooperative cellars in the Burggrafenamt district – the Burggräfler Winery and the Meran Winery. This landmark fusion resulted in a modern winemaking cooperative, which today comprises 380 members and cultivates an impressive 260 hectares of vineyards. The union brought together the entire western winegrowing region of South Tyrol under one roof – stretching from Lana in the south, through Meran to Riffian in the north, and from Algund to Kastelbell in the west. The region benefits from a distinctive interplay of alpine freshness and Mediterranean influence, creating optimal conditions for complex and high-quality viticulture.
The vineyards are largely tended by dedicated small-scale producers who cultivate the finest hillside plots in municipalities such as Meran, Algund, Tirol, Kuens, Riffian, Schenna, Marling, Tscherms and Lana. These steep slopes demand experience and meticulous manual labour, rewarding growers with grapes of exceptional quality that reflect the character of the region. Of particular note is the Vinschgau valley, which stretches across the far western edge of South Tyrol and is known as the driest valley in the Alps, with annual rainfall averaging less than 500 millimetres. The climatic extremes – intense sunlight combined with cool night-time temperatures – offer unique conditions for vine cultivation. Vinschgau is home to South Tyrol’s smallest contiguous DOC winegrowing area and boasts outstanding varietals such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Noir and Vernatsch, whose aromatic complexity and expressive character are admired well beyond the region.
Today, the Meran Burggräfler Winery stands as a harmonious blend of deep-rooted tradition, state-of-the-art cellar technology and a profound connection to South Tyrol’s terroir. Its wines – from crisp whites like Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc to robust reds such as Lagrein and Merlot – reflect the rich diversity of the landscape and the passion of its winemakers. Above all, the indigenous varieties Vernatsch and Lagrein embody the very soul of South Tyrol’s winemaking heritage, offering wine lovers a genuine taste of this multifaceted viticultural region.
