Rocca Bernarda

Logo Rocca Bernarda

The winery, or rather the "Chateau Rocca Bernarda" was founded in 1567 by Bernardo di Valvason Maniago and inherited by the Order of the Knights of Malta in 1976.

Rocca Bernarda is one of the oldest wineries in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Hardly any stately residence in Friuli has such a beautiful location as the Rocca Bernarda, embedded in an ideal Italian landscape with centuries-old cypresses and a charming view of a beautiful area: graceful vineyards in a unique hilly position, in the middle of which is the wine cellar. The cultivated vineyards cover around fifty hectares, the majority of which are newly planted, with a planting density of around 5,500 vines, and using material derived from clone selection and mass selection carried out on the farm. In this way, the new vines are already acclimatized to the terroir and the quality is optimized. The "Ponca", a typical Friulian soil of sand and marly sandstone that forms the hills of Rocca Bernarda, gives elegance and minerality to the wines. This type of soil has its origins in lake basins and has been subject to turbid currents, which explain the frequent alternation of hard and soft layers. The oenologists pay particular attention to the position in the sun: The red grapes and the picolit grape are grown on the southern slopes, while the sites on the east and west sides are reserved for the aromatic varieties.
