Sparkling wines

Prosecco is a white grape that only grows in northeastern Italy in a small region in the province of Treviso in the Veneto region. From it you press mainly a frizzante, as well as sparkling wines but also normal wine.

Prosecco is mainly the name of an old grape variety from Veneto. Prosecco was already highly valued as a vinum pucinum in ancient times.

Since the wine bears the name of a grape variety, it could basically be produced anywhere. However, only Prosecco from a legally defined region around the municipalities of Valdobbiadene and Conegliano may have the status of a DOC Prosecco if the prescribed quality standards are met.

Wines, sparkling wines and sparkling wines from the same grape from other parts of Italy may only bear the designation IGT. However, IGT spumanti do not necessarily have to be worse than those from the DOC region. Also, in the surrounding areas, e.g. in the Aquileia region in Friuli, excellent Prosecco grapes for Spumante production grow.

The term Prosecco is incorrectly attributed to the italian village of the same name near Trieste. The connection to the Italian secco (dry) is purely coincidental.
