Even 5000 years ago vine was planted here. Even Julius Caesar (100-44 BC.) preferred the Mamertino (Mamertinum) from Messina, and Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD.), for example, the wine from Taormina and a Haluntium from Syracuse, whose successor could be today the DOC Moscato di Siracusa.
