Viticulture in South Tyrol and Trentino: tradition, terroir and top quality

Regions Trentino and South Tyrol

The wine regions of South Tyrol and Trentino rank among the most captivating and tradition-steeped viticultural areas in Europe. Nestled within the majestic Alpine landscape, they blend millennia of history with contemporary cellar craftsmanship and an unwavering commitment to quality. The wines produced here not only delight connoisseurs but also set international benchmarks of excellence.

South Tyrol: Where alpine elegance meets Mediterranean finesse

Viticulture in South Tyrol dates back to the 5th century BC, with archaeological discoveries near Brixen attesting to an early wine culture. Following the Roman conquest, Rhaetian traditions merged with advanced Roman viticultural techniques, laying the foundation for a wine landscape that remains vibrant to this day. During the Middle Ages, Bavarian and Swabian monasteries played a pivotal role in shaping the region’s wine production. They introduced systematic vine cultivation, refined cellar practices, and meticulously recorded their knowledge. A significant milestone came in the 19th century, when Archduke Johann introduced noble grape varieties such as Riesling and Pinot Noir to the area. The construction of the Brenner railway in 1867 further opened South Tyrolean wines to international markets. The 20th century marked a turning point, with the establishment of cooperative wineries and the introduction of the DOC classification in 1963, both of which elevated the region’s quality standards. Today, nearly all vineyard areas are protected under controlled designation of origin. Particularly sought-after are aromatic white wines such as Gewürztraminer and Pinot Blanc, as well as the distinctive red variety Lagrein – a true South Tyrolean original.

Trentino: Historical roots and sparkling excellence

Trentino, too, boasts a remarkable history of winemaking. The Etruscans were already familiar with and appreciative of wine, and the Romans further advanced viticultural knowledge. In the Middle Ages, monasteries and the Prince-Bishop of Trento actively and sustainably promoted wine cultivation. During the Habsburg era, beginning in the 15th century, the region experienced significant economic growth, which also benefited its wine industry. Following the First World War, Trentino’s annexation to Italy brought structural challenges; yet since the 1970s, the region has increasingly focused on quality and a strong sense of regional identity. Particularly noteworthy is Trentino’s production of sparkling wines using the traditional method (Metodo Classico). From Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, elegant Trento DOC Spumante are crafted wines that regularly garner international acclaim. Indigenous grape varieties such as Teroldego Rotaliano, Marzemino and Nosiola further enrich the region’s diversity and distinctive character.

South Tyrol & Trentino: Two regions – one passion for quality

Today, South Tyrol and Trentino rank among Italy’s most distinguished wine regions. Their success story is rooted in a deeply embedded wine culture, cutting-edge cellar technology, and a profound appreciation of terroir. Whether it be mineral-driven white wines, robust reds, or exceptional sparkling wines, the diversity and quality of these Alpine landscapes are truly unique—and celebrated across the globe.
