160 ANNI Rosso Calabria IGT 2021
Description
160 Anni Rosso Calabria IGT 2021 / Ippolito 1845 / Calabria
Red wine from Italy
The “160 Anni” Rosso Calabria IGT 2021 is a characterful anniversary wine that pays tribute to the rich heritage and artisanal craftsmanship of the Ippolito 1845 estate. Founded in the coastal town of Cirò Marina in 1845, the winery is one of Calabria’s oldest and most esteemed producers. Today, it cultivates around 50 hectares of vineyards, with a strong focus on indigenous grape varieties—most notably the distinctive Gaglioppo, one of southern Italy’s most important red grapes.
Gaglioppo vines are hardy, disease-resistant, and perfectly adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Their thick-skinned berries thrive in sun-drenched, arid conditions and yield deeply coloured ruby-red wines with a complex aromatic profile. Notes of cherries, dark berries and wild herbs are often complemented by subtle hints of tobacco, leather and black pepper.
For the “160 Anni”, only carefully selected Gaglioppo grapes are used, grown on hillside vineyards at approximately 250 metres above sea level in the Cirò Marina area. The sandy and clay-rich soils of the region provide ideal conditions for balanced ripening and aromatic concentration. After harvest, the grapes undergo traditional drying on racks until late November—a process known as Appassimento, which lends the wine additional depth and structure. The must is then macerated with fresh fruit and aged for 16 months in oak barrels.
In the glass, the “160 Anni” reveals a vibrant ruby hue with subtle violet reflections. The bouquet is layered and refined, offering aromas of ripe blackberries, cherries and raisins, interwoven with floral notes of violet and spicy accents of juniper, clove, cocoa and black pepper. Delicate hints of forest floor and a touch of menthol add further complexity.
On the palate, the wine is dry, rounded and well-structured. Ripe fruit flavours take centre stage, supported by floral and spicy undertones. The tannins are present yet finely integrated, delivering a velvety, powerful mouthfeel. The finish is long, harmonious and marked by remarkable elegance.
Served at a temperature of 18 to 20 °C, the “160 Anni” unfolds its full expressive potential. Decanting for around an hour prior to serving is recommended to allow the wine’s aromatic richness to shine. Gastronomically, it pairs beautifully with game dishes, braised beef, lamb seasoned with Mediterranean herbs, mature hard cheeses and dark chocolate.
Thanks to its meticulous vinification and the inherent structure of the Gaglioppo grape, the “160 Anni” offers excellent ageing potential of approximately 10 to 15 years. Over time, it gains further depth, complexity and balance—a wine that not only tells the story of a historic estate, but also captures the essence of Calabrian terroir at its finest.

Grape variety
GAGLIOPPO
Gaglioppo is an indigenous, black-skinned grape variety native to southern Italy, with origins that likely trace back to ancient Greece. Today, it is predominantly cultivated in the Calabrian provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro and Crotone, where it is regarded as one of the region’s most emblematic and historically significant varieties. The vine is distinguished by medium-sized, five-lobed leaves that occasionally take on heart- or wedge-shaped forms. Its grape clusters are compact, medium in size, and typically pyramid- or cone-shaped. The berries themselves are also medium-sized, with a distinctive red-black hue. Gaglioppo thrives under short pruning and offers consistent, reliable yields. When vinified as a single varietal, Gaglioppo produces wines with a more or less intense ruby-red colour, marked by firm tannins and a subtle, earthy bitterness. With age, however, these wines evolve into expressions of remarkable finesse and elegance, becoming true ambassadors of Calabrian terroir.
