Description

Aglianico Rosso Calabria IGP 2020 / Ferrocinto / Calabria

Red wine from Italy

Tenute Ferrocinto is based in the village of Castrovillari, halfway between the cities of Potenza and Cosenza in the southern Italian region of Calabria. The area is also known as "Conca del Re" and was already known as a wine-growing region before the Romans arrived. Surrounded by the largest Italian national parks, the vines find ideal conditions here, as there are large temperature differences between day and night. Man's work in the vineyard preserves the characteristics of the terroir by working in perfect harmony with nature. Every day they have to make a choice that ultimately leads to a result that represents a perfect synthesis between centuries-old tradition and new technological achievements.

The origins of the Aglianico vine date back to antiquity and it is considered one of the oldest grape varieties in Italy. It has experienced a renaissance over the past two decades and is currently used for some of the best wines in southern Italy. Aglianico is particularly sensitive to the influences of the terroir, such as soil conditions and climate. The grapes for the Aglianico Rosso Calabria IGP grow on a plateau at the foot of the Monte Pollino Mountain range, in the immediate vicinity of Italy's largest national park. The soils here are extremely calcareous. The grapes also benefit from the large temperature differences between day and night here.

The grapes are harvested in the third and fourth decade of October. Mash fermentation then takes place in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25 to 30°C. This marvellous wine is then aged for a year in French barriques. This marvellous wine is then aged for a year in French barrique barrels. Finally, after bottling, it is left to rest in the bottle for at least six months before being released for sale.

The Aglianico from Ferrocinto is a bright red wine with violet reflections that exudes a unique aroma of berries, spices, and leather. Aromas of berries, cocoa, red fruit jam, dried fruit, aromatic herbs, and balsamic notes unfold. The flavour of this southern Italian is dry, very fresh, full, and mineral thanks to its good acidity. Its finish is balanced, full and long-lasting. Overall, a powerfully structured wine of beautiful intensity and complexity.

At a recommended serving temperature of 18 to 20°C, the Aglianico Rosso Calabria IGP from Tenuta Ferrocinto is an excellent accompaniment to pasta with rich sauces such as game ragù, roasts, braised meat, venison and well-aged cheeses.

Grape variety

AGLIANICO

Aglianico is a red grape variety that is mainly cultivated in southern Italy. It is believed to have its origins in antiquity. There are historical records suggesting that the Greeks may have introduced the grape variety to the southern Italian regions. During Roman times, the Aglianico grape variety gained in importance. They valued the grape for its ability to produce wines with good ageing potential and structure. Aglianico vines were cultivated in the region's monasteries during the Middle Ages and the monks played an important role in the preservation and further development of the grape variety. The Renaissance brought a heyday for many Italian grape varieties, including Aglianico. During the 19th century, especially after the phylloxera plague, many grape varieties in Europe were replaced by imported American vines in order to save viticulture. However, the Aglianico survived in some regions of southern Italy. In the first half of the 20th century, Aglianico experienced a certain loss of importance in favour of international grape varieties. In the last decades of the 20th century, however, a renaissance began for indigenous Italian grape varieties, including Aglianico. This ancient grape variety has experienced a renaissance in recent decades and is now used for some of the best wines in southern Italy. The cultivation areas in Campania, particularly Taurasi, and in Basilicata, Aglianico del Vulture, have established themselves as outstanding production sites for Aglianico wines. The leaves of the Aglianico vine are medium-sized and slightly serrated. The leaf colour is usually dark green. The grapes of the Aglianico plant are rather small and have a conical or cylindrical shape. The berries are small to medium-sized and have a thick skin that is rich in tannins. The berries of the Aglianico grape are dark blue to black in colour and contain juicy pulp. Aglianico is known for its late ripening and the harvest usually takes place in late October to early November. This is reflected in the grapes' ability to develop high acidity levels and intense tannins. The Aglianico vine has an upright growth habit and tends to form dense foliage. Proper care and foliage management are crucial to ensure good ventilation of the grapes and minimise the risk of disease. Overall, Aglianico is particularly sensitive to the influences of the terroir, including soil conditions and climate. This is reflected in the different characters of Aglianico wines from different regions.
