Description

"Amìra" Nero d’Avola Rosato DOC 2023 / Principi di Butera / Sicily
Rosé wine from Italy

In one of the most remote and venerable regions of Sicily, an oasis of unparalleled beauty unfolds. This region is renowned not only for the major indigenous grape varieties of Sicily but also as the preferred growing area for the noble Nero d'Avola. The vineyard extends around an old Baglio, once belonging to the Princes of Butera. Situated in one of the island's most mineral-rich areas, just a few steps from the Mediterranean coasts, nestled between the Valley of the Temples and Piazza Armerina. The diversity and biological richness of the soils, combined with a unique microclimate characterized by refreshing sea breezes, make this historic land the ideal place for sustainable viticulture and a unique haven of biodiversity. Nestled amidst the vibrant colours of citrus fruits and surrounded by the captivating scents of the Mediterranean maquis, elegant wines are created here, distinguished by fine aromas, great intensity, and refreshing freshness.

Nero d'Avola, often referred to as the "queen of Sicilian vines," is one of Sicily's most significant indigenous red wine varieties. Originally from the region around Avola, it has been cultivated on the island for centuries. Thanks to the warm Mediterranean climate and mineral-rich soils, it thrives exceptionally well here, producing robust, aromatic wines. This grape variety is known for its adaptability to dry conditions and its resilience. Today, Nero d'Avola is considered the flagship of the Sicilian wine industry and is used both in varietal wines and blends.

The grape harvest traditionally begins in the first week of September, precisely when the grapes have reached their optimal ripeness. After the grapes are carefully destemmed and gently crushed, the juice remains in contact with the skins only briefly. This gives the wine its characteristic delicate pink colour. The must is then separated from the skins and the juice fermented in temperature-controlled tanks. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, all impurities are removed through clarification and filtration to make the wine crystal clear. Finally, the cellar master adds a small amount of the deep red Amira Nero d’Avola to achieve the desired hue. The finished rosé wine is then bottled and ready to be enjoyed.

In the glass, the "Amìra" Nero d’Avola Rosato DOC from Principi di Butera shines in a delicate pale pink with a light shimmer of orange. Aromatically, it unfolds a varietal bouquet reminiscent of juicy berries - from wild strawberries to raspberries to blackberries. The floral notes transport the senses into a world full of hibiscus blossoms. On the palate, the wine presents itself with a fine and delicate structure, while good minerality perfectly harmonizes with lively acidity. The barely perceptible tannins give the wine an elegant and complex note. The finish is wonderfully refreshing.

At an optimal drinking temperature of about 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, the lively acidity and fresh aromas of the Amìra Rosato perfectly complement the delicate nuances of seafood such as prawns, crabs, and mussels. The light and fruity note of the wine also makes it an ideal companion for a variety of appetisers and snacks, whether it's antipasti or light salads. This rosé harmonizes particularly well with the slightly tangy taste of goat cheese, as the acidity of the wine beautifully balances the creamy texture of the cheese. It also pairs excellently with pasta al Ragù; its structure effortlessly keeps pace with the hearty and spicy tomato sauce.

Grape variety

NERO D‘AVOLA

The Nero d'Avola is regarded as one of the most prominent and significant red wine varieties of Sicily, often bearing the title "Queen of Sicilian Vines". Though its precise origin is not definitively documented, it is generally considered an indigenous Sicilian grape variety. Its name, referring to the town of Avola in the province of Syracuse, suggests its likely regional origin. It is believed that the Nero d'Avola vine has been cultivated in Sicily for centuries. Written records of wine cultivation on the island date back to antiquity, indicating the probable significant role Nero d'Avola played in ancient Sicilian viticulture. Throughout the 20th century, Sicilian viticulture underwent various phases of modernization and quality improvement, with Nero d'Avola gaining increasing recognition for its quality and versatility in the latter decades of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Wines made from Nero d'Avola gained international acclaim, elevating the grape variety to a significant ambassador of the Sicilian wine industry. Today, Nero d'Avola is cultivated in various parts of Sicily, with certain regions like the province of Syracuse deemed particularly suitable for its cultivation. Nero d'Avola thrives in the warm, sun-drenched wine regions of Sicily. The Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters, provides ideal growing conditions for this grape variety. Soils can vary from sandy to clayey, contributing to the diversity of Nero d'Avola wines. The leaves of the Nero d'Avola plant are medium-sized and heart-shaped, typically dark green with slightly undulating edges, while the stems are usually greenish to reddish. The grapes are relatively large with a cylindrical shape, bearing oval berries that turn dark blue to black when ripe. The grape clusters can be densely packed and are usually loosely filled. The berries have medium size and thick, dark skins, containing juicy, dark flesh rich in colour, aroma, and sugar content, making them ideal for winemaking. Nero d'Avola is a robust grape variety well-adapted to the warm Mediterranean climate of Sicily. The plant can withstand dry conditions and is relatively resistant to diseases and pests. It thrives best in sunny locations with well-draining soils to realize its full potential. While Nero d'Avola can be used as a single varietal, it is often blended with other local or international grape varieties to enhance complexity and structure.
