Description

Chardonnay Festival Südtirol DOC 2021 / Cantina Merano / South-Tirol

White wine from Italy

In 2010, the two traditional winery cooperatives of the Burggrafenamt, the Cantina Burggräfler and the Cantina Merano winery merged. This resulted in the Cantina Merano Burggräfler, which now has 380 members and cultivates 260 hectares of vineyards. As a result, the western cultivation area of South Tyrol from Lana in the south via Merano to Riffian in the north and Lagundo to Kastelbell in the west has been united under one roof.

The white grape variety CHARDONNAY has been grown in Italy for a long time, especially near the Alps. When she came to Italy is not known because there has been a confusion of languages up to the present. In Italy this variety was called Pinot Bianco or Pinot Blanc. Terms Clarity has only existed since the 1990s. CHARDONNAY probably has its origin in Burgundy. In the Merano area, this renowned white wine variety finds the best conditions to thrive and, when blended from different altitudes, unfolds its very own, individual variety of aromas.

The “Festival” wine line from the Cantina Merano, to which our Chardonnay belongs, offers expressive wines typical of the variety. The cultivation areas of the vines are in the communities of Algrund, Meran, Schenna, Lana and Marling at heights of 280 to 450m above sea level and thrive on humus, weakly loamy sand, and granite. The grape harvest takes place relatively early at the beginning of September. To avoid unintentional fermentation, the grapes are immediately transported to the wine cellar, destemmed and winemaking begins with cold maceration in the grape press. The alcoholic fermentation then takes place in small stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature. The acid is partially biodegraded. It then needs five months of storage on the fine lees to complete this wonderful Chardonnay Festival Südtirol DOC.

With its lively straw yellow with a greenish shimmer, the bouquet of the Chardonnay Festival Südtirol DOC from the Merano winery is reminiscent of exotic fruits such as bananas, pineapples, and ripe apples. On the palate, this white wine is dry, harmonious, fresh, very soft and offers a long finish. The taste buds perceive notes of pineapple, yellow apples, and a little caramel.

The Chardonnay from the renowned Cantina Merano proves to be an excellent accompaniment to various dishes at a recommended serving temperature of approximately 10 to 12°C. Poultry dishes such as roasted chicken, turkey, or duck, in particular, benefit from the freshness and fruitiness of this wine, providing a tasteful enhancement, while the moderate acidity ensures a balanced combination. The versatility of Chardonnay is also evident in its harmonious pairing with various fish dishes, especially those with a richer preparation. Grilled salmon, shrimp, or lobster are complemented by the structure of the wine. Not only does Chardonnay unfold its gastronomic qualities with poultry and fish, but it also pairs well with soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert. The creaminess and flavour diversity of the cheeses align excellently with the full-bodied character of this wine, leading to a delightful and elegant tasting experience. The multifaceted adaptability of Chardonnay from South Tyrol is further demonstrated in its successful pairing with smoked foods. Whether it's smoked fish or grilled meat, the complexity of the wine effortlessly matches the intense aromas of smoked foods. The structured richness of Chardonnay also finds its counterpart in the accompaniment of poultry pastries and quiches, especially those prepared with lightly spicy or herbal flavours. Finally, it is worth mentioning that this South Tyrolean Chardonnay also pairs exceptionally well with the famous South Tyrolean “Käsenocken”.

Grape variety

CHARDONNAY

The Chardonnay is a white grape variety with an extensive and fascinating history, now globally recognized for the production of high-quality wines. The precise origin of the variety is not definitively established, but it is believed to have originated in the Burgundy region of France. The name "Chardonnay" might possibly be derived from a locality called Chardonnay in Burgundy. The introduction of Chardonnay in South Tyrol occurred relatively late, beginning in the 1970s and 1980s. During this period, many winegrowers in the region introduced new grape varieties to expand the diversity of wines and meet the increasing international demand for specific types. The adaptability of Chardonnay to various terroirs and climatic conditions eventually contributed to the establishment of the grape variety in South Tyrol. Since its introduction, Chardonnay has flourished in South Tyrol. Winemakers have perfected their techniques in the vineyard and cellar to produce characterful Chardonnay wines that reflect the characteristics of the South Tyrolean terroir. The leaves of the Chardonnay vine are medium-sized, round, and deeply lobed. The medium-sized clusters are conical, and the berries are small to medium-sized, with a yellowish colour and thin skin. Chardonnay vines exhibit a moderate to vigorous growth habit, and the grapes tend to ripen early, depending on climatic conditions and the growing location. The cool climate and high altitudes in South Tyrol contribute to slow grape ripening, resulting in good acidity retention and complex aromas. To maximize grape quality, many winegrowers in South Tyrol opt for low yields per hectare and meticulous selective harvesting, contributing to the production of concentrated and high-quality fruit.
