Description

"Cima Bianca" Terre d’Abruzzo IGT 2024 / Fosso Corno / Abruzzo
White wine from Italy

The Fosso Corno winery stretches across thirty hectares of gently rolling hills near Roseto degli Abruzzi, a charming town in the central Italian province of Teramo. Nestled between the coastal cities of Ancona and Pescara, the estate offers a picturesque setting that lends a unique inspiration to viticulture. A stroll through the vineyards reveals, to the east, shimmering views of the Adriatic Sea, while to the west, the imposing Gran Sasso massif rises from the undulating landscape—a panorama that perfectly captures the distinct character of the region.

During the 1990s, growing interest in the noble Montepulciano grape led the esteemed Biscardo family to acquire the estate in 2001. Since then, they have devoted themselves to the production of high-quality wines, combining meticulous vineyard care with a keen eye for agronomic innovation.

The Abruzzo region is regarded as one of Italy’s most exciting wine territories. Here, where rugged soils meet the gentle influence of the Adriatic climate, a truly distinctive terroir emerges—one that nurtures not only robust reds but also white grape varieties of remarkable finesse. Chardonnay thrives in the region’s lean soils and Mediterranean conditions, resulting in a harmonious balance of ripe fruit and subtle minerality. Depending on the vinification, it may express itself as crisp and vibrant or as full-bodied with creamy, buttery notes. Sauvignon Blanc, too, reveals its full aromatic potential in this environment, offering a spectrum of citrus, green apple and delicate floral tones, all underpinned by the depth and structure imparted by the region’s calcareous soils.

It is within this exceptional landscape that the Cima Bianca Terre d’Abruzzo IGT is born—an elegant cuvée composed of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are hand-harvested in early September to preserve their natural freshness and aromatic integrity. Following a gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in modern stainless-steel tanks at a carefully controlled temperature of 16°C, a process designed to protect the wine’s delicate aromas and ensure a refined, well-structured profile.

In the glass, Cima Bianca reveals a radiant straw-yellow hue, laced with subtle golden highlights. Its bouquet is delicate and fruit-forward, with crisp apple, juicy apricot and a hint of grapefruit combining to create a clear and inviting aromatic impression. On the palate, the wine is clean and expressive, supported by a well-balanced acidity and an elegant, medium-weight body. A moderately long finish, marked by refreshing clarity, reflects the care and precision of its vinification.

Served at an ideal temperature of 6 to 8°C, Cima Bianca reaches its full potential. It pairs beautifully with light Mediterranean cuisine—whether grilled or oven-baked salmon, a classic Caprese salad with ripe tomatoes, fresh basil and creamy mozzarella, or a refined selection of seafood. It also complements delicate pasta dishes and assorted antipasti, making it a stylish companion wherever freshness and finesse are called for.

CHARDONNAY

Although Chardonnay originally hails from Burgundy and is regarded as one of the noble representatives of Vitis vinifera, it has captured the admiration of wine enthusiasts across the globe – including in the Abruzzo region. This area, characterised by its rolling hills and soils that range from loamy to sandy, provides a unique terroir in which Chardonnay can fully express its distinctive charm. In Abruzzo, Chardonnay truly shines. The vines flourish amidst a Mediterranean climate boasting hot summers and mild winters. The vine’s leaves are medium-sized, ranging from rounded to slightly lobed, and display a rich, dark green hue. The grapes themselves vary in shape from cylindrical to conical, grow in clusters of varying density, and glisten in hues from greenish yellow to golden-yellow. Harvest typically takes place from late summer to autumn, when the grapes have achieved the perfect balance of sugar and acidity. Here, winemakers artfully combine traditional methods with modern techniques to bring out the unique character of Chardonnay in a distinctly regional style. The resulting wines not only pay homage to the noble origins of the grape but also vividly capture the unique identity and potential of Abruzzo.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

The Sauvignon Blanc grown in Abruzzo boasts a vibrant historical evolution. Originally rooted in the traditional wine regions of France—particularly Bordeaux and the Loire—this aromatically intense grape variety eventually made its way to Italy. In recent decades, forward-thinking winemakers in Abruzzo have discovered that this region provides the perfect foundation to express the distinctive character of Sauvignon Blanc in a fresh, innovative manner. Abruzzo impresses with its Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot, sun-drenched summers and cool winters. The prevailing loamy and sandy soils retain essential moisture exceptionally well while offering excellent drainage. These conditions promote a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes, allowing a rich spectrum of aromas to develop—from refreshing citrus notes and hints of green herbs to subtle mineral nuances. Visually, the Sauvignon Blanc vine is robust and vibrant. Its medium-sized, rounded to slightly lobed leaves exude a rich, green radiance that highlights the plant’s vitality. The grapes form small, compact clusters, typically cylindrical in shape, and vary in colour from a fresh green to a delicate yellow hue—a tantalising preview of the wine waiting to be enjoyed.
