"Cima Bianca" Terre d’Abruzzo IGT 2024 / Fosso Corno / Abruzzo

Container of 3 bottles

White wine from Italy

The Fosso Corno winery stretches across thirty hectares of gently rolling hills near Roseto degli Abruzzi, a charming town in the central Italian province of Teramo. Nestled between the coastal cities of Ancona and Pescara, the estate enjoys a picturesque setting that lends itself beautifully to viticulture. Strolling through the vineyards, one can gaze eastward towards the shimmering Adriatic Sea, while to the west, the majestic Gran Sasso massif rises from the soft contours of the landscape. This region is renowned for its exceptional wines and boasts a unique natural environment that provides ideal conditions for cultivation.

During the 1990s, interest in the noble Montepulciano grape grew steadily, prompting the Biscardo family to acquire the Fosso Corno estate in 2001. Since then, they have devoted themselves to producing wines of the highest quality, combining meticulous vineyard care with targeted agronomic experimentation to consistently bring out the best in their vines.

In the sun-drenched hills of Abruzzo, where rugged soils meet the gentle influence of the Adriatic, the noble grape varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc thrive. Although the region has traditionally been known for its robust reds, refined white wines are increasingly gaining recognition for their successful fusion of tradition and modern winemaking. Chardonnay benefits from the mineral-rich soils and Mediterranean climate, resulting in a harmonious balance of ripe fruit and subtle, flinty nuances. Depending on the vinification, it ranges from crisp and refreshing to full-bodied with buttery undertones. Likewise, Sauvignon Blanc reveals its charm in this climate, offering a vibrant aromatic profile that spans citrus and green apple notes, complemented by delicate floral hints. The calcareous soil imparts a firm minerality and depth, showcasing the adaptability of Abruzzo’s viticulture and the passion of its winemakers, who skilfully capture the essence of the region in every sip.

Here, in the gently undulating wine-growing zone of Abruzzo, where clay and sandy soils provide a balanced foundation for exceptional wines, the two grape varieties - 50% Chardonnay and 50% Sauvignon Blanc - form the basis of the “Cima Bianca” Terre d’Abruzzo IGT from Fosso Corno. The grapes are hand-harvested in early September to preserve their natural freshness and authentic character. Upon arrival at the winery, they undergo a gentle pressing process that carefully captures their delicate aromas. Fermentation then takes place in modern stainless-steel tanks at a consistently controlled temperature of 16°C, allowing the wine to mature at its own pace before being bottled.

In the glass, Cima Bianca reveals a radiant straw-yellow hue, interwoven with subtle golden reflections. This visual impression already hints at the freshness and elegance to come. On the nose, a refined, fruity bouquet unfolds, where crisp apple and juicy apricot blend harmoniously, while a delicate touch of grapefruit adds a lively sparkle. On the palate, the wine is clean and aromatic, supported by a well-balanced acidity that enhances its elegant structure. A medium-length finish completes the sensory experience, reflecting both the authentic character and the careful craftsmanship behind this white wine from Abruzzo.

Served at an ideal temperature of 6 to 8°C, Cima Bianca Terre d’Abruzzo IGT pairs beautifully with light Mediterranean dishes. Its balanced structure and elegant aromas make it a perfect companion to delicate fish, particularly grilled or oven-baked salmon. It also complements a classic Caprese salad - ripe tomatoes, fresh basil and creamy mozzarella—as well as refined seafood, light pasta dishes and a selection of Mediterranean antipasti, wherever freshness and finesse take centre stage.

This set of three bottles of Cima Bianca offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy this expressive white wine across a variety of occasions - whether at a summer dinner with friends, as a thoughtful gift, or simply to enrich your personal wine collection.

Grape varieties

CHARDONNAY

Although Chardonnay originally hails from Burgundy and is regarded as one of the noble representatives of Vitis vinifera, it has captured the admiration of wine enthusiasts across the globe – including in the Abruzzo region. This area, characterised by its rolling hills and soils that range from loamy to sandy, provides a unique terroir in which Chardonnay can fully express its distinctive charm. In Abruzzo, Chardonnay truly shines. The vines flourish amidst a Mediterranean climate boasting hot summers and mild winters. The vine’s leaves are medium-sized, ranging from rounded to slightly lobed, and display a rich, dark green hue. The grapes themselves vary in shape from cylindrical to conical, grow in clusters of varying density, and glisten in hues from greenish yellow to golden-yellow. Harvest typically takes place from late summer to autumn, when the grapes have achieved the perfect balance of sugar and acidity. Here, winemakers artfully combine traditional methods with modern techniques to bring out the unique character of Chardonnay in a distinctly regional style. The resulting wines not only pay homage to the noble origins of the grape but also vividly capture the unique identity and potential of Abruzzo.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

The Sauvignon Blanc grown in Abruzzo boasts a vibrant historical evolution. Originally rooted in the traditional wine regions of France—particularly Bordeaux and the Loire—this aromatically intense grape variety eventually made its way to Italy. In recent decades, forward-thinking winemakers in Abruzzo have discovered that this region provides the perfect foundation to express the distinctive character of Sauvignon Blanc in a fresh, innovative manner. Abruzzo impresses with its Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot, sun-drenched summers and cool winters. The prevailing loamy and sandy soils retain essential moisture exceptionally well while offering excellent drainage. These conditions promote a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes, allowing a rich spectrum of aromas to develop—from refreshing citrus notes and hints of green herbs to subtle mineral nuances. Visually, the Sauvignon Blanc vine is robust and vibrant. Its medium-sized, rounded to slightly lobed leaves exude a rich, green radiance that highlights the plant’s vitality. The grapes form small, compact clusters, typically cylindrical in shape, and vary in colour from a fresh green to a delicate yellow hue—a tantalising preview of the wine waiting to be enjoyed.
