White wine from Italy
Fosso Corno Winery spans an impressive 30 hectares on a picturesque hill near Roseto degli Abruzzi, a charming village in the central Italian province of Teramo. Nestled between the port towns of Ancona and Pescara, it offers an idyllic setting for viticulture. A leisurely stroll through the vineyards reveals the sparkling Adriatic Sea to the east, while to the west the majestic Gran Sasso massif rises gracefully from the rolling hills. This region is renowned for its exceptional wines and boasts a unique natural setting that provides ideal conditions for grape cultivation. In the 1990s, growing interest in the noble Montepulciano wine led the Biscardo family to acquire the Fosso Corno Winery in 2001, and since then they have been dedicated to producing wines of the highest quality through meticulous vineyard care and targeted agronomic experiments.
In the sun-drenched Abruzzo region, where rugged soils and the gentle influence of the Adriatic combine to create a unique terroir, the noble grape varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc thrive superbly. Although the area is traditionally known for its robust red wines, elegant white wines are increasingly making their mark by blending traditional methods with modern winemaking techniques. Here, Chardonnay benefits from barren soils and a Mediterranean climate, which results in a harmonious balance between ripe fruit flavours and subtle mineral nuances—ranging from a fresh, crisp style to a fuller-bodied wine with buttery accents. Similarly, Sauvignon Blanc reveals its charm here with an intense aromatic spectrum—from citrus and green apple notes to delicate floral hints—enhanced by calcareous soils that impart a robust minerality and depth. Both varieties stand as a testament to the adaptability of viticulture in Abruzzo and mirror the passion of winemakers who skilfully capture the region’s distinctive terroir in every glass.
In the picturesque, hilly wine-growing zone of Abruzzo, where loamy and sandy soils form a harmonious foundation for exceptional wines, these two varieties—split equally at 50% Chardonnay and 50% Sauvignon Blanc—come together as the basis for the “Cima Bianca” Terre d’Abruzzo IGT from Fosso Corno Winery. The succulent grapes are hand-harvested as early as September in order to preserve their natural freshness and authentic character. Immediately upon arrival at the cellar, they are gently pressed to carefully capture their delicate aromas. The juice is then fermented in modern stainless steel tanks at a constant, carefully controlled temperature of 16 °C, ensuring a uniform fermentation. The wine is allowed to mature at its own pace until it is finally bottled.
In the glass, Cima Bianca dazzles with a radiant straw-coloured hue interwoven with delicate golden reflections. This initial visual impression hints at both freshness and elegance. On the nose, a refined, fruity bouquet unfolds, where the aromas of crisp apple and succulent apricot blend harmoniously, while a subtle hint of grapefruit lends the bouquet a sparkling lightness. On the palate, the wine presents itself as clean and aromatic, supported by a well-balanced acidity that accentuates its elegant body. A medium-length finish completes the sensory experience, reflecting the authentic character and meticulous craftsmanship of this Abruzzo white wine.
Best enjoyed at an optimal serving temperature of around 6 to 8 °C, Cima Bianca Terre d’Abruzzo IGT is an ideal partner for light, Mediterranean dishes. Its balanced structure and elegant aromas make it a perfect accompaniment to delicate fish dishes, with salmon—whether grilled or oven-cooked—harmonising beautifully. It also excels when paired with a classic Caprese salad, where ripe tomatoes, fresh basil and creamy mozzarella delight the palate. Furthermore, it complements delicate seafood, light pasta dishes or an assortment of Mediterranean antipasti—wherever freshness and lightness take centre stage.

Grape varieties
CHARDONNAY
Although Chardonnay originally hails from Burgundy and is regarded as one of the noble representatives of Vitis vinifera, it has captured the admiration of wine enthusiasts across the globe – including in the Abruzzo region. This area, characterised by its rolling hills and soils that range from loamy to sandy, provides a unique terroir in which Chardonnay can fully express its distinctive charm. In Abruzzo, Chardonnay truly shines. The vines flourish amidst a Mediterranean climate boasting hot summers and mild winters. The vine’s leaves are medium-sized, ranging from rounded to slightly lobed, and display a rich, dark green hue. The grapes themselves vary in shape from cylindrical to conical, grow in clusters of varying density, and glisten in hues from greenish yellow to golden-yellow. Harvest typically takes place from late summer to autumn, when the grapes have achieved the perfect balance of sugar and acidity. Here, winemakers artfully combine traditional methods with modern techniques to bring out the unique character of Chardonnay in a distinctly regional style. The resulting wines not only pay homage to the noble origins of the grape but also vividly capture the unique identity and potential of Abruzzo.
SAUVIGNON BLANC
The Sauvignon Blanc grown in Abruzzo boasts a vibrant historical evolution. Originally rooted in the traditional wine regions of France—particularly Bordeaux and the Loire—this aromatically intense grape variety eventually made its way to Italy. In recent decades, forward-thinking winemakers in Abruzzo have discovered that this region provides the perfect foundation to express the distinctive character of Sauvignon Blanc in a fresh, innovative manner. Abruzzo impresses with its Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot, sun-drenched summers and cool winters. The prevailing loamy and sandy soils retain essential moisture exceptionally well while offering excellent drainage. These conditions promote a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes, allowing a rich spectrum of aromas to develop—from refreshing citrus notes and hints of green herbs to subtle mineral nuances. Visually, the Sauvignon Blanc vine is robust and vibrant. Its medium-sized, rounded to slightly lobed leaves exude a rich, green radiance that highlights the plant’s vitality. The grapes form small, compact clusters, typically cylindrical in shape, and vary in colour from a fresh green to a delicate yellow hue—a tantalising preview of the wine waiting to be enjoyed.
