CIMA ROSA Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2024
Description
CIMA ROSA Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2024 / Fosso Corno / Abruzzo
Rosé wine from Italy
The Fosso Corno winery spans an impressive thirty hectares of uninterrupted land on a hill near the charming town of Roseto degli Abruzzi in Italy’s central province of Teramo, nestled between the bustling port cities of Ancona and Pescara. Standing amidst the vineyard, one can gaze eastward at the glimmering Adriatic Sea or turn west to marvel at the majestic Gran Sasso massif rising from the rolling landscape. This renowned wine-producing area is blessed with a unique natural setting, offering ideal conditions for viticulture. Inspired by the growing enthusiasm for Montepulciano wines during the 1990s, the Biscardo family acquired the Fosso Corno winery in 2001. Since then, their commitment to producing premium-quality wine has driven them to dedicate immense care to their vineyards and experiment rigorously with agronomic techniques.
Montepulciano, a remarkable native red grape variety originally from Tuscany, is now widespread across central Italy. Wines crafted from its grapes are rich in colour, earthy to subtly spicy, and robust to full-bodied. While they boast excellent ageing potential, they are equally delightful when enjoyed young. From these grapes, the celebrated Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC rosé wine is produced. By regulation, this wine must consist of at least 85% Montepulciano grapes, with up to 15% of other non-aromatic red grape varieties authorised for cultivation in Abruzzo allowed to be blended, whether individually or collectively.
The handpicked grapes destined for the Cima Rosa Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC are sourced from the heart of the Montepulciano DOCG area near Roseto degli Abruzzi. Harvested in mid-September, the Montepulciano grapes are gently pressed immediately upon arrival at the winery. Following a 12-to-15-hour maceration period with skin contact, the rosé winemaking process continues at controlled temperatures in climate-regulated stainless-steel tanks. Finally, the wine undergoes sterile cold bottling, ready to be enjoyed immediately.
When poured into a fine wine glass, the vibrant cherry-red hue of the Cima Rosa catches the eye, while its fresh, fruity aroma, reminiscent of strawberry, elderflower, and gooseberry, captivates the nose. On the palate, the Cima Rosa is dry yet harmonious—fresh, fruity, and utterly pleasant, with a refined mineral structure. This remarkable balance of dryness and fruitiness ensures a truly satisfying tasting experience.
Served chilled at an optimal temperature of 8 to 10°C, the Cima Rosa Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo from Fosso Corno is a superb choice for an aperitif. Naturally, this well-rounded wine pairs beautifully with light dishes, especially Italian antipasti, seafood, grilled fish, and white meat. It’s a perfect companion to herald the arrival of summer!.

Grape variety
MONTEPULCIANO (CERASUOLO D’ABRUZZO)
Montepulciano, an outstanding red grape variety, reigns majestically in the sun-drenched southern Abruzzo region, particularly in the province of Chieti. This noble vine thrives under warm, sun-soaked conditions, demonstrating remarkable resilience even in dry climates. The southern Abruzzo offers the perfect sanctuary for this esteemed grape, where the proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the embrace of the surrounding mountains creates a gentle, temperate climate. A soft sea breeze ensures a balanced temperature, while the protective mountains shield the vines from extreme weather conditions. The Montepulciano vine impresses with its vigorous growth, adorned with deeply lobed leaves and gracefully loose clusters of medium to large grapes that catch the eye with their dark blue-black hue. These vines exhibit excellent resistance to diseases and flourish on a variety of soils. The grapes are versatile, lending themselves to single-varietal wines as well as blends. Frequently paired with other varieties such as Sangiovese, they are instrumental in crafting a wide range of red wine styles. The roots of the Montepulciano grape stretch far back into the ancient history of central Italy, particularly in Abruzzo. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, winemaking played a significant role in the region, with monasteries and local nobility dedicating themselves to viticulture and cultivating various grape varieties, including Montepulciano. The 20th century marked significant advancements in winemaking, especially after World War II, as technological innovations and a deeper understanding of vine training, soil composition, and climate adaptation contributed to the improved quality of wines. Montepulciano gained growing recognition as a distinct variety, no longer confined to blending but celebrated for its unique characteristics. In recent years, Montepulciano has earned increasing acclaim for its quality and distinctive character, highlighted by its promotion to DOC and even DOCG status, affirming its exceptional quality and cultural significance. An intriguing fact about the Montepulciano grape is that, despite its name, it is primarily associated not with the town of Montepulciano in Tuscany but with the southern Abruzzo region. This discrepancy often causes confusion, as the name suggests a different origin. However, no definitive historical source clarifies the connection between the grape and the town, leaving the relationship open to interpretation and speculation. Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is the name of the rosé wine derived from this grape. By regulation, the wine must consist of at least 85% Montepulciano grapes, with up to 15% of other non-aromatic red grape varieties, approved for cultivation in Abruzzo, permitted to be blended either individually or collectively.
