Description

CIMA ROSA Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC 2024 / Fosso Corno / Abruzzo

Container of 3 bottles

Rosé wine from Italy

The esteemed Fosso Corno winery spans thirty hectares of uninterrupted vineyard land, gracefully situated on a hillside near the town of Roseto degli Abruzzi in the central Italian province of Teramo, nestled between the coastal cities of Ancona and Pescara. Standing among the vines, one can gaze eastward towards the shimmering Adriatic Sea, while to the west, the majestic Gran Sasso massif rises from the rolling landscape. This region, renowned for its wines, enjoys a truly exceptional natural setting—one that lends itself perfectly to viticulture.

In response to the growing interest in Montepulciano wines during the 1990s, the Biscardo family acquired Fosso Corno in 2001. Since then, their unwavering commitment has been to produce wines of outstanding quality, a pursuit that demands meticulous vineyard care and the thoughtful application of agronomic innovation.

Montepulciano is a native red grape variety originally from Tuscany, now widely cultivated throughout central Italy. Wines made from these grapes are deeply coloured, rustic to finely spiced, and robust with generous alcohol levels. While they age gracefully, they are also delightful when young. From these grapes comes the elegant rosé known as Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC, which must, by regulation, consist of at least 85% Montepulciano. Up to 15% of other authorised, non-aromatic red varieties from the Abruzzo region may be blended in.

The carefully selected grapes for Cima Rosa Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC are sourced from the heart of the Montepulciano DOCG zone, near Roseto degli Abruzzi. Harvested in mid-September, the Montepulciano grapes are gently pressed immediately upon arrival. After a brief maceration with skin contact lasting approximately 12 to 15 hours, the wine undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation in climate-managed stainless-steel tanks. A sterile cold bottling follows, allowing the wine to be enjoyed straight away.

In the glass, Cima Rosa reveals a vibrant cherry-red hue. On the nose, it offers fresh, fruity aromas reminiscent of strawberry, elderberry and gooseberry. The palate is dry and harmonious, with a lively, fruity character and a pleasing mineral backbone. The balance between dryness and fruitiness is beautifully achieved.

Served chilled at an ideal temperature of 8 to 10°C, Cima Rosa Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo from Fosso Corno makes a superb aperitif. It pairs effortlessly with light dishes, especially Italian starters, grilled fish and delicate white meats. A perfect companion for warm summer days.

This listing includes a set of three bottles of Cima Rosa Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo - ideal for sharing, gifting, or simply savouring more than once.

Grape variety

MONTEPULCIANO (CERASUOLO D’ABRUZZO)

Montepulciano, an outstanding red grape variety, reigns majestically in the sun-drenched southern Abruzzo region, particularly in the province of Chieti. This noble vine thrives under warm, sun-soaked conditions, demonstrating remarkable resilience even in dry climates. The southern Abruzzo offers the perfect sanctuary for this esteemed grape, where the proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the embrace of the surrounding mountains creates a gentle, temperate climate. A soft sea breeze ensures a balanced temperature, while the protective mountains shield the vines from extreme weather conditions. The Montepulciano vine impresses with its vigorous growth, adorned with deeply lobed leaves and gracefully loose clusters of medium to large grapes that catch the eye with their dark blue-black hue. These vines exhibit excellent resistance to diseases and flourish on a variety of soils. The grapes are versatile, lending themselves to single-varietal wines as well as blends. Frequently paired with other varieties such as Sangiovese, they are instrumental in crafting a wide range of red wine styles. The roots of the Montepulciano grape stretch far back into the ancient history of central Italy, particularly in Abruzzo. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, winemaking played a significant role in the region, with monasteries and local nobility dedicating themselves to viticulture and cultivating various grape varieties, including Montepulciano. The 20th century marked significant advancements in winemaking, especially after World War II, as technological innovations and a deeper understanding of vine training, soil composition, and climate adaptation contributed to the improved quality of wines. Montepulciano gained growing recognition as a distinct variety, no longer confined to blending but celebrated for its unique characteristics. In recent years, Montepulciano has earned increasing acclaim for its quality and distinctive character, highlighted by its promotion to DOC and even DOCG status, affirming its exceptional quality and cultural significance. An intriguing fact about the Montepulciano grape is that, despite its name, it is primarily associated not with the town of Montepulciano in Tuscany but with the southern Abruzzo region. This discrepancy often causes confusion, as the name suggests a different origin. However, no definitive historical source clarifies the connection between the grape and the town, leaving the relationship open to interpretation and speculation. Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is the name of the rosé wine derived from this grape. By regulation, the wine must consist of at least 85% Montepulciano grapes, with up to 15% of other non-aromatic red grape varieties, approved for cultivation in Abruzzo, permitted to be blended either individually or collectively.
