Description

"Coriduci" Moscato Giallo Terre Siciliani IGT Passito 2021 / Principi di Butera / Sicily

Dessert wine from Italy

In the deepest and most venerable corner of Sicily lies an oasis of rare beauty, home to Sicily's great indigenous grape varieties and the preferred growing area for Nero d'Avola. The estate extends around an old Baglio, once belonging to the Princes of Butera, located in one of the island's most mineral-rich areas, just a stone's throw from the Mediterranean coasts, between the Valley of the Temples and Piazza Armerina. The diversity and biological richness of the soils, combined with a unique microclimate benefiting from sea breezes, make this ancient land ideal for sustainable viticulture and a unique biodiversity haven. Amidst the vibrant hues of citrus fruits and the scents of Mediterranean scrub, elegant wines with refined aromas, great intensity, and freshness are born.

The name "Coriduci" is derived from the Sicilian term for the corridors or pathways that wind through the vineyards and the winery. These corridors are an integral part of the estate's historical structure and symbolize the connection between the various stages of wine production, from the vines to the finished wine.

The Moscato Giallo grape variety, also known as Goldmuskateller, reveals its unique charm and character in Sicily. Here, it flourishes under the warm Mediterranean sun and the favourable climatic conditions that provide ideal growth settings. The Moscato Giallo grape is renowned for its golden yellow hue, giving it a charming, sunny glow. The berries are small but packed with intense aromas. In Sicily, this variety finds particularly suitable soil in the island's mineral-rich terrain, contributing to the remarkable depth and complexity of Moscato Giallo wines.

The Moscato Giallo grapes are harvested late in the year, usually in autumn, when they have reached full ripeness. They are then dried under the warm Sicilian sun, either on racks or on traditional reed or straw mats. This drying process, which lasts about two months, increases the sugar concentration and reduces the volume of the grapes. After drying, the grapes are carefully harvested and fermented in small crates or barrels to ensure the natural juice flow. This method allows for optimal extraction of the grape's essence. The resulting wine then ages for approximately 12 months in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels, where it develops its complex aromas. Finally, the wine is refined for at least two years in the bottle to fully develop its aromas and complexity. This patient and loving care results in a wine of exceptional quality and depth.

The "Coriduci" Moscato Giallo Terre Siciliani IGT Passito captivates with a brilliant, golden yellow colour that sparkles in the glass, adding a touch of elegance. Its rich and refined bouquet reveals fruity aromas of orange, peach, dates, along with hints of figs and apricots. These are perfectly complemented by fresh notes of white flowers, giving the fragrance an irresistible depth. On the palate, acidity and sweetness are harmoniously balanced, forming a full, rounded body. The taste is long-lasting and intense, carried by a pleasant mineral note that beautifully rounds off the tasting experience. A wine that seduces the senses and makes every glass a special delight.

With a recommended drinking temperature of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, the "Coriduci" Moscato Giallo Terre Siciliani IGT Passito from Principi di Butera offers a true explosion of flavours with its sweet and aromatic character and is an excellent companion to many culinary delights. This wine pairs particularly well with desserts. A refreshing fruit salad, creamy panna cotta, or traditional Sicilian pastries like cannoli harmonize wonderfully with the fruity aromas of Moscato Giallo Passito. It is also a superb choice with blue cheese, where the wine's sweet fruitiness contrasts beautifully with the intense spiciness of the cheese, creating a perfect balance.

Adventurous wine lovers can enjoy this dessert wine with savoury dishes that have a slightly sweet note, such as duck in orange sauce or a spicy pumpkin soup. Here, the wine accentuates the flavours of the dishes and perfectly rounds off the tasting experience.

Grape variety

MOSCATO GIALLO

The Moscato Giallo grape variety, also known as Goldmuskateller, is renowned in Italy for its intense, aromatic wines. Originally hailing from the Mediterranean region, it produces unique wines particularly in the warm regions of Sicily. Here, where hot summer days and cooler nights define the climate, Moscato Giallo develops a special character that perfectly showcases its natural aromas and acidity. The first Moscato Giallo vines likely arrived in Sicily with the Greeks or Phoenicians, who began cultivating wine in the 8th century BC. The Arabs, who conquered Sicily in the 9th century, significantly contributed to the development of viticulture by improving irrigation techniques and farming methods, enhancing the quality of wines on the island. During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Moscato Giallo experienced a golden age and was highly valued at European royal courts. The Spanish rule over Sicily in the 16th and 17th centuries greatly contributed to the spread and popularity of Moscato wines, as Sicilian Moscato found its way along the trade routes of the Spanish crown, becoming known beyond the Mediterranean region. In the 20th century, Sicilian winemakers rediscovered the potential of Moscato Giallo for producing high-quality dessert wines and aromatic wines. A new movement in the Sicilian wine industry in the 1980s and 1990s, focusing more on the quality and uniqueness of indigenous grape varieties, brought Moscato Giallo back into the spotlight. Moscato Giallo grows with medium to vigorous strength, featuring a rather compact, bushy growth. The vine develops many lateral shoots and therefore requires regular canopy management to ensure the grapes receive adequate light and ventilation. The grapes are relatively compact and densely berried, cylindrical to slightly conical in shape, sometimes branching at the shoulders. The small to medium-sized berries are oval-shaped and have a characteristic golden yellow color that can turn almost amber when fully ripe. The thick skin makes the berries more resistant to external influences and fungal diseases. Moscato Giallo prefers warm, sunny locations with well-drained soils. In Sicily, the vine particularly benefits from the mineral-rich, volcanic soils, which further enhance the aroma and complexity of the grapes. Despite its adaptability, the variety requires careful water management as it is sensitive to humidity. Overall, Moscato Giallo is an aromatic and characterful grape variety, particularly well-suited to sunny, Mediterranean climates. Its golden yellow grapes and intense aromas make it an exceptional variety for producing special, aromatic wines and sweet wines, distinguished by their fruitiness and floral notes.
