"Diamanti" Grillo Sicilia DOC 2023 / Principi di Butera / Sicily

Container of 3 bottles

White wine from Italy

In one of Sicily's most remote and esteemed regions lies an oasis of exceptional beauty, celebrated for its indigenous grape varieties and renowned as a premier growing area for Nero d'Avola. The estate unfolds around an ancient baglio, a traditional Sicilian farmhouse that once belonged to the Princes of Butera. It is situated in one of the island's most mineral-rich zones, just steps from the Mediterranean coast, nestled between the Valley of the Temples and Piazza Armerina. The soil's rich diversity and biological wealth, together with a unique microclimate enriched by sea breezes, make this historic land an ideal setting for sustainable viticulture and a unique haven of biodiversity. Amidst the vibrant colours of citrus groves and the fragrant aromas of the Mediterranean macchia, elegant wines are born here, marked by refined aromas, depth, and remarkable freshness.

From the mineral-rich soils of Butera comes a Grillo that shines with the brilliance and intensity of a rare diamond. The Diamanti is a complex, harmonious white wine, combining fresh citrus and passion fruit notes with a delicate hint of menthol.

The Grillo grape, an indigenous Sicilian white variety, thrives especially well in the Trapani region in the island’s west. Thought to have originated in the late 19th or early 20th century from a natural crossing of the white Catarratto grape and another local variety, Grillo has long been valued for its adaptability to the warm, dry climate, making it a preferred grape for Marsala wine production. In recent decades, interest in pure Grillo wines has risen. Grillo grapes are large, cone-shaped, and golden yellow, with medium-sized, five-lobed leaves. Grillo wines are characterised by a refreshing acidity, pairing splendidly with seafood and light Mediterranean dishes.

In the picturesque village of Butera, south of Caltanissetta in southern Sicily, magnificent vines grow in soils of volcanic origin. The grapes are carefully harvested at peak ripeness and are gently pressed. The resulting must is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, then aged on its lees for four to six months. After this maturation phase, the wine is further refined in the bottle, enhancing its characteristic elegance and depth.

The "Diamanti" Grillo Sicilia DOC from Principi di Butera shimmers in a bright, luminous straw yellow, threaded with delicate greenish highlights. Its bouquet is broad and unexpectedly fresh, offering inviting notes of citrus and pineapple rounded off with a subtle touch of menthol. On the palate, this Sicilian classic is complex and harmonious, with a distinct saline character and remarkable minerality.

At an ideal serving temperature of around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, this Grillo from Principi di Butera unfolds its fresh citrus and passion fruit notes, balanced by a subtle mineral depth, making it the perfect companion for light, summery dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled seafood, such as prawns or squid, or with a tender oven-baked fish fillet. It enhances the flavours of salads with citrus dressing and accentuates the freshness of summery vegetable dishes. It also shines alongside delicate pasta with seafood or a gentle risotto variation. The "Diamanti" Grillo Sicilia DOC is not only a delight on the palate but also a wonderful companion for convivial gatherings among friends.

Grape variety

GRILLO

The Grillo grape, an indigenous white variety, originates from the picturesque island of Sicily, particularly from the Trapani region in the island’s west. It is believed to have emerged as a natural cross between the white Catarratto grape and another local variety, likely in the late 19th or early 20th century. From the start, the Grillo vine thrived especially well under the hot, dry conditions of western Sicily. Its remarkable adaptability to this climate quickly made it a favourite among local winemakers, who prized it for producing quality wines. Initially, Grillo was used primarily in the production of Sicily’s famous fortified Marsala wine. However, in recent decades, there has been a rising interest in single-varietal Grillo wines, leading winemakers to use this grape to craft exceptional stand-alone wines. Grillo vine leaves are medium-sized with a slightly oval shape. Their dark green colour gives them a glossy texture, and they are typically five-lobed with sharply serrated edges. The grapes are large and cone-shaped, hanging in loosely clustered bunches on the vine and displaying a graceful golden-yellow hue with a compact structure. The berries are medium-sized, round to slightly oval, with thin skins and juicy flesh that ripens from a greenish tint to a rich golden-yellow or amber. The Grillo vine exhibits medium to high vigour, with a tendency to branch well. It flourishes in a variety of soil and climate conditions but performs best in warm, dry climates. The vines are highly resistant to drought and heat, making them ideal for cultivation in Mediterranean regions like Sicily. Grillo grapes have a medium ripening period and are typically harvested from late August to mid-September, depending on local weather conditions and the desired ripeness level for winemaking. Grillo wines are often distinguished by their refreshing acidity, which imparts liveliness and balance. They are generally enjoyed young and pair well with seafood, fish dishes, seafood pasta, and other light Mediterranean fare. Today, Grillo is experiencing a renaissance, appreciated both in single-varietal wines and in blends with other Sicilian grape varieties.
