Description

Falanghina Puglia IGT 2023 / Masseria Altemura / Apulia

White wine from Italy

Masseria Altemura is nestled in the heart of Salento, between the Ionian and Adriatic seas. This winery boasts a unique terroir, characterized by exceptional light, fresh, constant sea breezes, and soils composed of white calcareous stones and the red earth of Salento. Located within the Primitivo di Manduria DOC appellation, in the countryside of Torre Santa Susanna, the estate includes a 17th-century farmhouse (Masseria), a winery designed according to green architecture principles, and the surrounding vineyards.

Falanghina is a white grape variety from Southern Italy, renowned for its high-quality wines. It is one of Italy’s oldest grape varieties, dating back to Roman times. The name derives from Latin words related to vine stakes. Falanghina was a key component of the luxurious Roman wine Falernum. After the fall of the Roman Empire, cultivation in Campania was preserved by monasteries and saw a revival during the Renaissance. In the 20th century, it also became popular in Apulia, adapting well to the climate. Today, Falanghina is integral to Apulia’s wine identity and is cultivated with modern methods. The wines are fresh, aromatic, and reflect the Mediterranean climate. Apulian Falanghina wines exemplify the variety’s diversity and quality.

The vineyards where the Falanghina grapes for this excellent white wine flourish are characterized by a layer of fine red earth resting on a bed of limestone. Vigorous, lush canopies successfully protect the grapes from over ripeness and sunburn, preventing oxidative effects, high alcohol levels, and excess tannins. To achieve fully ripe, crisp grapes by harvest time, it is crucial that the vines receive the right amount of water during the important ripening phase. This careful vineyard management forms the foundation for a white wine that excels in its balance of spiciness and acidity.

The grapes for the Falanghina Puglia IGT, harvested at perfect ripeness, are gently pressed, with the must extracted using soft pneumatic presses. The wine ferments for seven to ten days in stainless steel tanks at a constant temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and then rests on fine lees for two to three months. This is followed by a maturation phase in the bottle, giving the wine its final polish.

The Apulian Falanghina displays a brilliant straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections. The bouquet reveals fine citrus notes accompanied by fresh aromas of white flowers, complemented by hints of apricot and peach. On the palate, the wine shows a perfect balance between spice and acidity, imparting remarkable finesse.

The Falanghina from Masseria Altemura, best enjoyed at a serving temperature of 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, is an ideal companion to a variety of dishes. Its fresh, citrusy character pairs beautifully with grilled seafood such as prawns, squid, and scallops. Light fish dishes, whether pan-fried or grilled, especially sea bream, sole, or sea bass, harmonize wonderfully with the wine's minerality. Steamed mussels with garlic, white wine, and fresh herbs are perfectly complemented by the salty and mineral notes of the Falanghina. A selection of antipasti, like bruschetta with fresh tomatoes, olives, and marinated vegetables, highlights the wine’s fruity and floral aromas. Light pasta dishes, especially with seafood (Spaghetti alle Vongole) or fresh herbs and lemon (Linguine al Limone), are an excellent match for Falanghina. A creamy risotto, whether with seafood or lemon, pairs well with the wine's vibrant acidity. The Falanghina also pairs wonderfully with white meats such as chicken or turkey breast, particularly when these are lightly prepared or grilled. Light veal and pork dishes, seasoned with fresh herbs and citrus fruits, complement the wine’s fruity notes. Fresh salads, especially with citrus dressings or ingredients like fennel and oranges, pair excellently with Falanghina. Grilled or roasted vegetables such as asparagus, zucchini, or aubergine enhance the wine’s fruity and mineral notes. Light, plant-based dishes like quinoa salads or chickpeas with fresh herbs are also ideal companions. Fresh cheeses and soft cheeses such as mozzarella, burrata, ricotta, and goat cheese harmonize well with the wine’s aromas. Mild, aged cheeses like Pecorino or young Provolone also pair nicely with this wine.

Grape variety

FALANGHINA

Falanghina is a white grape variety predominantly cultivated in southern Italy, renowned for its high-quality wines. It is considered one of Italy's oldest grape varieties, with origins tracing back to ancient Roman times. The name "Falanghina" likely derives from the Latin words "falangae" or "phalangae," which refer to stakes or supports used in viticulture. In Roman antiquity, Falanghina was a key component of the wine Falernum, produced in Campania and celebrated as a symbol of luxury. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the tradition of cultivating Falanghina endured in Campania, particularly thanks to monasteries that preserved viticultural practices. During the Renaissance, wine production experienced a revival, and Falanghina once again gained appreciation. In the 20th century, the grape variety grew in popularity and was also planted in Apulia, where it adapted well to the local climate. Today, Falanghina is a significant part of viticulture in Apulia, contributing to the region's wine identity. Modern cultivation techniques have further enhanced the quality of Falanghina wines, leading to increasing recognition both in Italy and internationally. The leaves of the Falanghina vine are medium to large, five-lobed, and deeply cut. The grapes are medium-sized, cylindrical to conical, and the berries have a thin but robust skin. They are yellowish to golden yellow and possess a high sugar content with moderate acidity. Harvesting in Apulia typically occurs between late September and early October. In Apulia, Falanghina is often grown using traditional systems like pergola or modern Guyot training, which improve fruit quality. The wines are fresh, aromatic, with lively acidity and balanced minerality. They reflect the Mediterranean climate and the mineral-rich soils of the region, offering a versatile flavour profile suitable for everyday enjoyment and special occasions. Apulian Falanghina wines are an excellent example of the diversity and quality this grape variety can offer.
