Red wine from Italy

In 2010, the venerable vintners' cooperatives of the Burggrafenamt, the Burggräfler Cellar and the Cantina Merano, decided to join forces and merge. This promising collaboration gave birth to the renowned Cantina Merano Burggräfler. Today, proud 380 members belong to the cooperative, managing an impressive vineyard area of 260 hectares. This union has made it possible to bring together the entire western growing area of South Tyrol under one roof – from Lana in the south, through the picturesque Meran, up to Riffian in the north, and from Algund across to Kastelbell in the west. This merger was truly a milestone for viniculture in the region, significantly contributing to the strengthening and preservation of traditional winemaking practices. The Meran Burggräfler Winery now not only brings together the passion and skill of its members but also the unique magic of the South Tyrolean vineyards.

With roots in Burgundy, France, this grape variety has been known for centuries for its high-quality wines. Pliny the Elder mentioned in the first century the “Vitis Allobrogica” as a possible ancestor of Pinot Noir. In the Middle Ages, Cistercian monks spread the grape further across Europe. In the 18th century, Pinot Noir was planted in northern Italy, but it wasn’t until the mid-19th century that it was successfully cultivated in South Tyrol, influenced by Edmund Mach, the director of the viticulture institute in St. Michael on the Etsch. Today, the “King of Red Wines” from Burgundy has found a second home south of the Alps in South Tyrol. Thanks to the caring and meticulous attention of the vintners on the steep slopes around Meran and in the Vinschgau, a multi-layered and elegant wine is crafted from this demanding Burgundy grape.

Pinot Noir has found a perfect home in the idyllic villages of Algund, Dorf Tirol, and Lana. At altitudes between 500 and 650 meters above sea level, this noble grape variety thrives under optimal conditions. The soils in these growing zones are comprised of light, permeable moraine debris, which not only provides the vines with ideal nutrient supply but also anchors the roots deeply and protects them from excessive moisture. The vines in these regions are between 10 and 20 years old and have adapted over the years to the special climatic conditions. This middle to high age class ensures high-quality grapes, as the plants exhibit more stable growth and intense aroma development in their maturity phase. The cultivation of Pinot Noir in Algund, Dorf Tirol, and Lana ensures that this wine is internationally appreciated for its elegance and quality. The region is not only known for its breathtaking landscapes but also for its exceptional wines, underscoring South Tyrol’s proud reputation as a winemaking region.

In the picturesque vineyards of South Tyrol, between late summer and early autumn, the careful harvesting of Pinot Noir grapes begins. The grapes are meticulously handpicked and destemmed to remove unwanted plant materials and ensure the wine’s quality. Following pressing, alcoholic fermentation occurs at controlled temperatures with constant must movement for about 10 days, ensuring optimal extraction of the grapes' aromas and pigments. This is followed by malolactic fermentation, a natural process that harmonises the wine's acidity, giving it a soft, rounded flavour profile. Finally, the "Festival" Pinot Noir Südtirol DOC from the Meran Winery matures in used barriques and small oak barrels. This maturation gives the wine its characteristic elegance and depth, marked by soft tannins and a subtle hint of oak. The entire process, from harvest to maturation, is a love letter to Pinot Noir. Every sip tells the story of passion, craftsmanship, and the unmistakeable quality of this noble wine.

This Pinot Noir enchants the eye with its bright ruby-red colour, inviting festive occasions. It opens with a fine bouquet that caresses the senses with fresh notes of red fruits like cherry and raspberry. On the palate, it is well-structured, with the gripping tannins giving the wine its remarkable depth and complexity. The finish is fine and soft, leaving an elegant, velvety sensation – a true delight for any wine lover.

At an optimal serving temperature of about 16 degrees Celsius, the "Festival" Pinot Noir Südtirol DOC from the Cantina Merano reveals its full elegance and finesse. The diverse aromas and soft tannins make it an ideal companion for game dishes. The deep, complex flavours of Pinot Noir complement game dishes such as deer, wild boar, or roe wonderfully. The wine’s intense flavour notes perfectly complement the rich game meats. Even wildfowl like duck or pheasant are excellently accompanied by the Pinot Noir's fruitiness and soft tannins. The wine’s elegant structure ensures a balanced taste experience. Lighter meat dishes such as milk-fed lamb and rabbit also benefit from the fine note of Pinot Noir. The tender texture of these meats meets the wine’s lively acidity, creating a harmonious combination. Whether it's pork roast, beef roast, or lamb roast – Pinot Noir from South Tyrol is the ideal companion for juicy roast dishes. The wine’s structure supports the intense roast aromas, making the dish a culinary highlight. To conclude a successful menu, Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with a selection of hard cheeses. The mature cheese aromas are perfectly complemented by the wine’s robust character, and its slight fruitiness provides a pleasant contrast to the spicy cheeses.

Grape variety

PINOT NOIR

Pinot Noir, known internationally as one of the oldest and most esteemed grape varieties in the world, has its roots in Burgundy, France. This region has been renowned for its high-quality wines for centuries. As early as the first century, Pliny the Elder described the "Vitis Allobrogica," considered a possible predecessor of Pinot Noir. During the Middle Ages, Cistercian monks brought the grape from Burgundy to other parts of Europe. In the 18th century, it was planted in northern Italy, though initially, it lacked the ideal growing conditions. Mid-19th century, Pinot Noir saw a breakthrough in South Tyrol, significantly influenced by Edmund Mach, the director of the viticulture institute in St. Michael an der Etsch. Today, Pinot Noir is indispensable in South Tyrol, covering about 260 hectares of cultivation area, making it a prominent red wine variety in the region. The wines are known for their elegance and quality and have gained international acclaim. The robust Pinot Noir vine develops strong woody tissues over the years and has slender greenish-reddish shoots. Its pentagonal to round leaves are vividly green in spring and summer, turning golden brown in autumn. The slightly hairy and rough leaf surface is characteristic of the variety. Pinot Noir's compact bunches consist of many small, dark blue to black berries with thin skins and high juice content. The berries’ taste is sweet and juicy, offering an excellent balance of acidity and sugar. The flowering period of Pinot Noir is typically in June, with the grapes usually ripening from late summer to autumn, thriving in South Tyrol's specific climatic conditions.
