Description

"Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG 2023 / Vinchio Vaglio / Piedmont

Container of 6 bottles

White wine from Italy

The Vinchio Vaglio cooperative winery is located in the picturesque region of Piedmont, one of Italy's most renowned wine regions. Founded in 1959, it is the result of the merger of the two winemaking villages of Vinchio and Vaglio Serra. The cooperative consists of a community of dedicated winemakers who work together to produce excellent wines and continuously improve the quality of their grapes and wines.

The Arneis grape variety is an indigenous vine with ancient roots, primarily cultivated in the beautiful Roero region in the northeast of the Cuneo province in Piedmont. The name "Arneis" means "the little difficult one" in the local dialect, hinting at the challenges of cultivating this variety. Historically, Arneis was often planted among higher-valued grape varieties to divert birds and bees away from the more precious vines by drawing their attention to the Arneis grapes. Due to its particular complexity and the care required in its cultivation, Arneis today enjoys a high reputation among winemakers and wine enthusiasts. Its unique aromas and the distinctive wines produced from it have secured Arneis a prominent place in Piedmont's wine landscape.

The vines for the "Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG by Vinchio Vaglio are trained using the Guyot training system and are predominantly oriented southwest on sandy soils at an average height of 250 meters above sea level. This ideal location allows the grapes to receive optimal sunlight and fully develop their characteristic aromas. The manual harvest of these precious grapes typically takes place in the first ten days of September. To preserve the quality of the grapes, they are carefully picked and transported in small crates, ensuring they arrive at the winery in perfect condition. A crucial factor in preserving the typical aromas of the Arneis grape is the early morning harvest when temperatures are still cool, ensuring the grapes retain their freshness and delicate flavors that make the "Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG so special.

The vinification of the "Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG begins with the gentle pressing of the whole grapes. The clear must is separated from the cloudy must to ensure the purity of the wine. This is followed by a static decanting for about 24 hours at a temperature of 14°C. The subsequent alcoholic fermentation is a particularly slow process that takes place under reductive conditions at a constant temperature of 17°C for 15 days. This careful and patient fermentation process is essential for the development of the typical Arneis aromas. From October to March, the white wine remains on its fine lees. During this time, it is regularly stirred through a process known as Batonnage. This method prevents the breakdown of the lees and allows the complex aromas of the Arneis grape to be incorporated into the wine. Before the "Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG by Vinchio Vaglio is finally marketed, it rests for at least three months in its bottle to refine. This final maturation step ensures that the aromas are fully harmonized, and the wine develops its unique, multi-layered flavour profile.

With its straw yellow colour and delicate amber reflections, the "Frusté" is extremely appealing in the glass. On the nose, this fine white wine unfolds a delicate, fresh, and fruity bouquet. Light notes of tropical fruits like pineapple and mango rise and harmoniously blend with subtle herbal nuances that linger in the finish. On the palate, the "Frusté" impresses with its dry character and remarkable balance. The perfect harmony of freshness, roundness, and structure makes it a very balanced wine that appeals to both newcomers and connoisseurs. The finish surprises with a subtly bitter note, adding complexity to the wine and leaving a lasting impression.

The "Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG by Vinchio Vaglio from Piedmont is an extremely versatile white wine that pairs perfectly with various dishes at an optimal serving temperature of 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. As an aperitif, it is ideal, with its freshness and lightness making it a perfect start to a meal. It pairs exceptionally well with light snacks like nuts, canapés, or olives. Fish dishes also benefit from the harmonious connection with this wine. Whether it's grilled fish, seafood, or sushi, the subtle fruit notes of the Arneis enhance the delicate flavour of the fish. Poultry dishes like chicken or turkey, especially when prepared in light sauces or grilled, pair excellently with this Roero Arneis. Fresh, crisp salads are another ideal companion. Salads that include fruity or nutty ingredients are particularly well complemented by this wine. Vegetarian dishes, especially those made with zucchini, asparagus, or artichokes, also benefit from the pairing with this refreshing white wine. Light, soft cheeses like mozzarella, ricotta, or mild goat cheese harmonize beautifully with the aromas of the Roero Arneis.

Grape variety

ARNEIS

The Arneis grape variety is an ancient white grape from the picturesque region of Piedmont in Italy. It was already known in the 15th century under the names Renesium and Ornesio. The term "Arneis" means "the little difficult one" in the local dialect, referring to the challenges of cultivating it. At one point, Arneis was nearly extinct, but it was rediscovered and revived in the 1990s. Arneis was originally used as a blending partner for the famous Nebbiolo wine to soften its acidity. Today, however, it is primarily used to produce high-quality white wines like Roero Arneis (DOCG) and Langhe Arneis (DOC). These wines are renowned for their seductive aromas of almond, green apple, pear, and melon, reminiscent of a blend between Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. The leaves of the Arneis vine are medium-sized, round to slightly five-lobed, with a wavy or slightly serrated edge. The leaf surface is often slightly hairy, and in autumn, the leaves take on a beautiful golden-yellow hue. The grapes are medium-sized and compact. The individual berries are relatively small, round, and have a greenish-yellow colour that turns golden-yellow when ripe. Due to the thin skin of the berries, this grape variety is prone to various diseases. Arneis vines are known for their vigorous growth and long shoots. They prefer well-drained soils and require careful management to achieve optimal yields and quality. The flowering period of the Arneis vine typically occurs in late spring. The grapes ripen late, about 30 days after the Chasselas grape, which means they are usually harvested towards the end of the grape harvest season. The yields of Arneis vines are low and require a lot of attention and care. They are susceptible to diseases like powdery mildew, necessitating careful monitoring and maintenance in the vineyard. Wines made from the Arneis grape variety are characterized by their fresh and aromatic profile. The bouquet often reveals aromas of green apple, pear, and melon, harmoniously intertwined with delicate notes of almond and white flowers. On the palate, the wine is light, crisp, and balanced with a fine harmony between fruitiness and acidity. Sometimes, subtle nuances of herbs and a hint of honey can be detected. The Arneis grape variety has established itself as a valuable addition to the wine landscape of Piedmont and is equally appreciated by winemakers and wine enthusiasts.
