Description

"Lorlando" Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC 2018 / Assuli / Sicily

Red wine from Italy

The Assuli winery is in the tranquil town of Mazara del Vallo between the towns of Marsala and Agrigento in western Sicily. In the course of time, a beautiful company site has developed here, which emerged from a half-timbered complex from the 18th century. Surrounded by rolling hills, modern functionality is combined with a strong connection to the territory.

The Nero d'Avola is a high-quality autochthonous grape variety of Sicilian origin, which is now widespread throughout southern Italy. Because of her excellent qualities, she is also called "Principe Siciliano" (Sicilian prince). It takes its name from the city of Avola, which lies between Syracuse and Noto. This variety is one of the traditional grape varieties of Sicily and is also known by the name "Calabrese", which may indicate the origin of the grape, in southern Italy's Calabria across the Strait of Messina.

The vineyards of the Assuli winery for the "Lorlando" Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC are in the heart of western Sicily, between the towns of Mazara del Vallo and Trapani, at an altitude between 100 and 150m asl, where an insular-Mediterranean climate with mild winters and breezy summers reigns. The vines are planted using the spur-cordon system, with a medium to high plant density, on the clay soils that prevail here with a good lime content and a balanced content of organic elements and nitrogen.

The grapes for the Lorlando are harvested from the end of September to the first few weeks of October, with strict attention being paid to the ripeness of the grapes. Winemaking begins with the traditional red wine fermentation, with maceration, i.e., the extraction of the tannins and fruit aromas from the grapes, lasting 25 to 30 days. Once this important process is complete, a very gentle extraction is initiated by traditional pumping at a controlled temperature of 26-28°C. After malolactic fermentation, the Nero d'Avola is refined in stainless steel tanks for three to four months. It then gets its final touch during storage in its bottle.

The "Lorlando" Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC from Assuli initially impresses with its intense ruby red streaked with violet reflections. Its bouquet exudes a scent reminiscent of ripe red fruit. A subtle, spicy note can be seen in the background. On the palate it is dry, rich, and balanced. Its good balance is supported by soft tannins.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 17 to 18°C, this fruity red wine from Sicily goes well with risotto, pasta with meat sauces, pasta al forno, red meat, roasts with potatoes and mature cheeses.

Grape variety

NERO D'AVOLA

NERO D'AVOLA is a high-quality indigenous grape variety of Sicilian origin, which is now widespread in southern Italy. Because of its excellent qualities, it is also called "Principe Siciliano" (Sicilian prince). The city of Avola lies between Syracuse and Noto. This variety is one of the traditional grape varieties of Sicily and is also known under the name "Calabrese", which may indicate the origin of the grape.
