"Mayro" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2019 / Fosso Corno / Abruzzo

Red wine from Italy

The Fosso Corno winery extends over thirty hectares in a single area on a hill near Roseto degli Abruzzi in the central Italian province of Teramo between the port cities of Ancona and Pescara. Standing in the vineyard, one can admire the beautiful Adriatic Sea to the east, while the imposing Gran Sasso massif rises from the hilly landscape to the west. This area, famous for its wines, is characterized by a unique natural location that is almost perfect for viticulture. The growing interest in Montepulciano wine in the nineties of the twentieth century prompted the Biscardo family to buy the Fosso Corno winery in 2001. Since then, the family has endeavoured to produce a very high-quality wine, which means that great efforts are required in the care of the vineyards and the careful use of agronomic experiments.

The Montepulciano is a red autochthonous grape variety from Tuscany, which can now be found all over central Italy. The wines produced from the grapes of this grape variety are intensely coloured, down-to-earth to fine-spicy and strong to alcoholic. Although they can be stored well, they also taste very good when young.

The carefully selected grapes for the "Mayro" Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC come from the heart of the Montepulciano DOCG area near the village of Roseto degli Abruzzi After the harvest, the traditional red wine vinification begins immediately with contact with the skins, with fermentation taking place in stainless steel tanks for ten days. The refinement of this world-famous wine then begins for six to eight months in French oak barrels. Finally, the Montepulciano must rest in its bottle for two to three months. Incidentally, the name “Mayro” comes from the Latin word “mavrus”, which means dark, black and is supposed to remind of the dark colour of this wine.

With its intense ruby red colour, the “Mayro” beguiles the olfactory senses with a delicate bouquet of plum and liquorice. Dry on the palate, the "Mayro" is a warm, round, and velvety wine that has a full body with its own personality.

At a perfect drinking temperature of around 18°C, the "Mayro" Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC from Fosso Corno goes very well with venison, roasts, and mature cheeses. Thanks to its balanced acidity and determined tannins, this smooth wine can also be combined with a variety of dishes.

Grape variety

MONTEPULCIANO is a red grape. The wine produced from grapes of this variety are vividly colored, traditional to fine-spicy and strong in alcohol content. Although they are easy to store, but also taste young very good.

The varietal Montepulciano, which is grown only in the Abruzzo (must be!) has nothing to do with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano. Although the cultivated wine here is also delicious, but is made of the Sangiovese grape.
