MAYRO Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2021
Description
"Mayro" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2021 / Fosso Corno / Abruzzo
Red wine from Italy
The Fosso Corno winery spans thirty hectares on a hillside near Roseto degli Abruzzi, in the central Italian province of Teramo, between the port cities of Ancona and Pescara. From the vineyard, there is a breathtaking view of the beautiful Adriatic Sea to the east, while the imposing Gran Sasso massif dominates the hilly landscape to the west. This region, famed for its wines, boasts a unique natural setting ideal for viticulture. The growing interest in Montepulciano wine in the 1990s prompted the Biscardo family to acquire the Fosso Corno winery in 2001. Since then, the family has been dedicated to producing wine of the highest quality, requiring significant efforts in vineyard care and the meticulous use of agronomic experiments.
Montepulciano is a noble red grape variety renowned for its intense and characterful wines. The wines produced from these grapes are distinguished by their deep red colour and offer a tasting experience that ranges from earthy and finely spiced to robust and high in alcohol content. Notably, these wines are not only excellent for ageing but also taste exceptionally good when young.
The grapes for the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC come exclusively from the ideally located and well-ventilated Fosso Corno vineyard. During the growth of the vines, careful attention is paid to ensure the grapes ripen optimally. The 10-day fermentation process of the Mayro Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC takes place in high-quality stainless-steel tanks. After this phase, the wine matures for six to eight months in impressive 15 hl oak barrels, where it develops its complex aromas and structure. Finally, the Mayro is refined for a further two to three months in the bottle before being released to the delight of wine lovers.
The name "Mayro" originates from the Latin word "mavrus", meaning dark or black. This Latin term aptly reflects the wine's deep, dark colour, reminiscent of the velvety blackness of a moonless night.
The Mayro Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from the Fosso Corno winery in Abruzzo presents itself in an intense ruby red that reveals its depth and elegance in the glass. The rich bouquet of the "Mayro" is soft and fragrant, with enticing notes of plums and liquorice. This dry wine is warm and rounded, impressing with its velvety texture, full body, and strong personality.
With a recommended serving temperature of about 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, the Mayro Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC is a wine of great character. Hearty pasta dishes with rich tomato or meat sauces are excellent companions for this outstanding red wine. Additionally, a classic Margherita or a pizza with hearty toppings like salami or bacon pairs very well with this Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, bringing out its aromas wonderfully. Meat dishes such as roast beef, lamb, or game particularly complement this wine from central Italy, as its robust notes perfectly underscore the flavours of these dishes. The Montepulciano d'Abruzzo also pairs excellently with grilled foods, whether it be meat, sausages, or vegetables. The smoky aromas from the grill and the wine's deep tones create a delicious combination. The experience is rounded off with medium-aged to mature cheeses such as Pecorino or Parmesan, which ideally complement the wine's full body and offer a well-rounded tasting experience.

Grape variety
MONTEPULCIANO
The Montepulciano grape, a distinguished red variety, thrives majestically in the sun-drenched southern Abruzzo region, particularly in the province of Chieti. This grape achieves perfection in warm, sun-soaked climates and flourishes even under dry conditions. Southern Abruzzo offers an ideal sanctuary for this noble variety, where the proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding mountains creates a mild climate. A gentle sea breeze ensures a comfortable temperature range, while the protective mountains shield against extreme weather. The Montepulciano plant impresses with its vigorous growth, characterized by deeply lobed leaves and gracefully loose clusters of medium to large-sized grapes, notable for their dark blue-black hue. These vines are resilient against diseases and thrive on a variety of soils. The Montepulciano grapes are suitable for both single-varietal wines and blends, often combined with other varieties like Sangiovese to create a range of red wine styles. The roots of the Montepulciano grape extend back to ancient Central Italy, particularly in Abruzzo. Viticulture played a significant role in this region during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where monasteries and local nobility dedicated themselves to the cultivation of various grape varieties, including Montepulciano. The 20th century saw substantial advancements in winemaking, especially after World War II. Technological innovations and a deeper understanding of vine training, soil composition, and climate adaptation greatly contributed to the enhancement of wine quality. Montepulciano gained increasing recognition as a distinct variety and was no longer used solely for blending. In recent times, the Montepulciano grape has garnered growing appreciation for its quality and unique character, reflected in its elevation to DOC and even DOCG classifications, underscoring its exceptional quality and cultural value. An interesting fact about the Montepulciano grape is that, despite its name, its primary association is not with the town of Montepulciano in Tuscany, but predominantly in southern Abruzzo. This fact often causes confusion, as the name suggests a different origin. There is no definitive historical source explaining the origin of the name, and the exact relationship between the grape variety and the town of Montepulciano remains open to interpretation and speculation.
