Description

"Mayro" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC 2021 / Fosso Corno / Abruzzo

Container of 6 bottles

Red wine from Italy

The Fosso Corno winery spans thirty hectares atop a gentle hill near Roseto degli Abruzzi, in the central Italian province of Teramo, nestled between the coastal cities of Ancona and Pescara. From the vineyards, one enjoys a breathtaking view of the shimmering Adriatic Sea to the east, while the imposing Gran Sasso massif rises majestically in the west. This region, celebrated for its exceptional wines, offers a unique natural setting that is perfectly suited to viticulture.

Inspired by the growing interest in Montepulciano wines during the 1990s, the Biscardo family acquired the Fosso Corno estate in 2001. Since then, they have devoted themselves to producing wines of the highest quality—an endeavour that demands meticulous vineyard care and the thoughtful application of agronomic experimentation.

Montepulciano is one of Italy’s most distinguished red grape varieties, known for yielding wines of deep colour and remarkable character. The resulting wines range from earthy and subtly spiced to bold and full-bodied. Notably, the Mayro Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC offers excellent ageing potential: when stored under optimal conditions, it can mature gracefully for up to ten years, gaining in complexity and depth while remaining thoroughly enjoyable even in its youth.

The grapes for this expressive red are sourced exclusively from the well-ventilated, ideally situated vineyards of Fosso Corno. After careful harvesting, the wine undergoes a ten-day fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by six to eight months of maturation in impressive 15-hectolitre oak barrels. A further two to three months of bottle ageing refine its structure and aromatic profile before release.

The name “Mayro” derives from the Latin word mavrus, meaning dark or black—a fitting tribute to the wine’s velvety, midnight hue. In the glass, it reveals a rich ruby red colour, hinting at the elegance and depth to come. The bouquet is soft and fragrant, with enticing notes of plum and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is dry, warm and rounded, with a silky texture, full body and striking personality.

This offering includes an exclusive set of six bottles of Mayro Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC—perfect for those wishing to experience the wine at different stages of maturity or to share with fellow connoisseurs. Whether enjoyed now or laid down for future indulgence, this trio promises both versatility and refinement.

Mayro pairs beautifully with hearty pasta dishes featuring rich tomato or meat-based sauces. It also complements classic pizzas such as Margherita or those topped with savoury ingredients like salami or pancetta. Robust meat dishes—beef roasts, lamb or game—are elevated by its bold structure, while grilled fare, from sausages to vegetables, finds a harmonious partner in its smoky undertones. To round off the experience, medium-aged to mature cheeses such as Pecorino or Parmesan enhance the wine’s full-bodied character and create a truly satisfying taste profile.

Grape variety

MONTEPULCIANO

The Montepulciano grape, a distinguished red variety, thrives majestically in the sun-drenched southern Abruzzo region, particularly in the province of Chieti. This grape achieves perfection in warm, sun-soaked climates and flourishes even under dry conditions. Southern Abruzzo offers an ideal sanctuary for this noble variety, where the proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding mountains creates a mild climate. A gentle sea breeze ensures a comfortable temperature range, while the protective mountains shield against extreme weather. The Montepulciano plant impresses with its vigorous growth, characterized by deeply lobed leaves and gracefully loose clusters of medium to large-sized grapes, notable for their dark blue-black hue. These vines are resilient against diseases and thrive on a variety of soils. The Montepulciano grapes are suitable for both single-varietal wines and blends, often combined with other varieties like Sangiovese to create a range of red wine styles. The roots of the Montepulciano grape extend back to ancient Central Italy, particularly in Abruzzo. Viticulture played a significant role in this region during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where monasteries and local nobility dedicated themselves to the cultivation of various grape varieties, including Montepulciano. The 20th century saw substantial advancements in winemaking, especially after World War II. Technological innovations and a deeper understanding of vine training, soil composition, and climate adaptation greatly contributed to the enhancement of wine quality. Montepulciano gained increasing recognition as a distinct variety and was no longer used solely for blending. In recent times, the Montepulciano grape has garnered growing appreciation for its quality and unique character, reflected in its elevation to DOC and even DOCG classifications, underscoring its exceptional quality and cultural value. An interesting fact about the Montepulciano grape is that, despite its name, its primary association is not with the town of Montepulciano in Tuscany, but predominantly in southern Abruzzo. This fact often causes confusion, as the name suggests a different origin. There is no definitive historical source explaining the origin of the name, and the exact relationship between the grape variety and the town of Montepulciano remains open to interpretation and speculation.
