Nuragus di Cagliari DOC BIO 2024
Description
Nuragus di Cagliari DOC BIO 2024 / Antonella Corda / Sardinia
White wine from Italy
The Nuragus di Cagliari DOC BIO by Antonella Corda is a white wine of remarkable elegance and provenance, capturing the Mediterranean soul of Sardinia in all its depth. It hails from Serdiana, a small village north of Cagliari, where the young winemaker Antonella Corda has transformed her family’s historic estate into a modern boutique winery. Rooted in tradition and inspired by her parents, she has been committed to quality, authenticity and sustainability since 2010 – with impressive results: her Cannonau wines have already received multiple “Tre Bicchieri” awards from Gambero Rosso.
Nuragus is one of the oldest indigenous white grape varieties on the island. Its name refers to the prehistoric Nuraghi - stone tower structures of the Bonnanaro culture - and speaks to the deep historical roots of this grape in Sardinia’s viticultural heritage. Likely introduced by the Phoenicians, Nuragus has adapted over centuries to the island’s Mediterranean climate and soils.
The vines for this wine thrive in the Campidano plain near the island’s capital, Cagliari. The soils here are a mix of sand, clay and pebble-strewn loam - a composition that lends the wine its balance and mineral character. The grapes are hand-harvested in early October to ensure optimal quality. In the cellar, a cold maceration is followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then matures for at least six months on the fine lees, also in stainless steel, which imparts structure and a delicate creaminess.
Particularly noteworthy is the wine’s certified organic quality. Every step of the production process adheres to strict ecological standards: synthetic chemicals are avoided in the vineyard, with natural fertilisers such as compost and manure used instead. Green manuring, mulching and the cultivation of nitrogen-fixing plants promote soil vitality. Beneficial insects and bird boxes help control pests, while copper and sulphur are used to combat fungal diseases. Biodiversity is actively encouraged through hedgerows, wildflower meadows and trees. In the cellar, gentle handling, native yeasts and minimal sulphur dioxide are employed. Bottling takes place under stringent hygienic conditions to avoid the need for chemical stabilisers. Organic certification is carried out by an independent body.
In the glass, the Nuragus di Cagliari DOC BIO reveals a clear straw yellow with greenish highlights - a hue reminiscent of the Sardinian sky just before sunset. On the nose, it offers a delicate interplay of green apple, ripe pear and subtle citrus notes, carried by a whisper of salty sea breeze. On the palate, the wine is dry, fresh and vibrant, with soft acidity and a creamy texture. Its pronounced minerality adds depth without compromising its lightness. The finish is clean and harmonious, with understated fruit and elegant freshness.
Served at 8 to 10 °C, this Sardinian white is ideal as an aperitif. Its versatility shines in pairings with raw or lightly cooked seafood such as oysters, scallops or prawn carpaccio. It also complements fish dishes like sea bream, sea bass or sardines with finesse. Vegetarian fare featuring fennel, courgette, artichokes or mild goat’s cheese works equally well, as do Mediterranean antipasti, light pasta dishes and risottos with vegetables or seafood.
A wine that doesn’t merely represent Sardinia - it makes it tangible. Authentic, elegant and sustainably crafted. Presented here as a set of three 0.75-litre bottles, it invites you to savour Sardinia across multiple occasions, or simply to share its charm.

- Origin and soil conditions: The Nuragus di Cagliari DOC BIO from Antonella Corda originates in Serdiana, a small village north of Cagliari in southern Sardinia. This region is characterised by a Mediterranean climate, saline air and a landscape shaped by gentle hills and proximity to the sea - ideal conditions for the indigenous Nuragus grape. The vines grow on calcareous marl soils, which lend the wine its distinctive mineral freshness. These soils retain moisture effectively, reflect sunlight and support a balanced ripening of the grapes - essential for achieving harmony between fruit, acidity and structure.
- Vinification: Following the harvest, the grapes undergo a period of cold maceration, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This process is designed to preserve the aromatic clarity and varietal character of the Nuragus grape. The wine is then matured for six months on fine lees, also in stainless steel, which enhances its structure and imparts a subtle, creamy texture.

Grape variety
NURAGUS
The Nuragus is a white grape variety primarily cultivated in Sardinia, believed to have existed there since ancient times. The Phoenicians, who established trading colonies on the island in the 9th century BC, might have introduced the grape or promoted its cultivation. In the 19th century, the Nuragus grape was recognised as one of Sardinia's traditional and significant varieties. After World War II, Sardinian winemaking experienced a renaissance, with efforts made to improve wine quality and promote traditional grape varieties like Nuragus. The introduction of modern viticultural techniques helped enhance the character and quality of Nuragus wines. In 1975, "Nuragus di Cagliari" was awarded DOC status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), ensuring the quality and origin of the wines and boosting their market reputation. The leaves of the Nuragus vine are medium-sized, rounded, and typically five-lobed, with a smooth upper surface and slightly hairy underside. The shoots are robust and become woody as they grow. Its late blooming makes the vine less susceptible to spring frosts, an advantage in Sardinia's Mediterranean climate. The grapes are large, compact, cylindrical, and often feature one or two smaller "wings." The berries are medium-sized, round to slightly oval, with a thick, golden-yellow skin that turns slightly brown when fully ripe and is resistant to pests and diseases. Nuragus is exceptionally well-adapted to Sardinia's Mediterranean climate, tolerating high temperatures and dry conditions well. Wines made from this grape variety are fresh, light, and dry, with pleasant acidity, a medium to light body, and typically a mineral finish, making them a refreshing choice for drinking.
