Description
Oltrenero Brut Nature Pavese DOCG 2019 / Oltrenero / Lombardy
Sparkling wine from Italy
The Oltrenero estate is located in Zenevredo, a charming village nestled within the Oltrepò Pavese region. Its name originates from the Latin "ginepretum," a reference to the juniper bushes that once adorned the hills. The vineyards spread across gentle slopes, sculpted millennia ago by glacial moraines, leaving behind fertile clay-rich soil ideal for viticulture. The art of winemaking in this area has a long and storied history, reaching back to ancient times. As early as 40 BC, both Pliny and Strabo mentioned "good wine, hospitable people, and large wooden barrels." During the Middle Ages, Benedictine monks revitalised the neglected lands, allowing the vines to flourish anew. This region, known as "Old Piedmont," became the birthplace of Italian sparkling wine production at the end of the 19th century. The noble Pinot Noir grape, particularly suited for white vinification, forms the foundation of fine sparkling wines crafted using the traditional method.
Pinot Noir, celebrated for its refined and versatile character, serves as the cornerstone for high-quality sparkling wines in Lombardy. Through white vinification, the grape reveals delicate aromas of red berries and floral notes, complemented by refreshing acidity and subtle minerality. Its exceptional structure and elegance make it perfectly suited for the classic method of sparkling wine production.
The Oltrenero Brut Nature is born from over 30-year-old vines, carefully selected from the estate's 30 hectares of Pinot Noir vineyards. The low yields and vinification in small batches, separated by parcel, are dedicated to achieving the highest quality. The grapes are hand-harvested and placed in small 16-kg crates. Following a gentle whole-bunch pressing, extracting 45% first-run juice (Mosto Fiore), the must undergoes a 12-hour static clarification at 16°C. The alcoholic fermentation lasts about 12 days at a temperature of 18°C. Subsequently, the wine matures until the spring after harvest, partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in large oak barrels. The secondary fermentation and ageing on lees in the bottle extend over approximately 48 months and are concluded by a three-month resting period post-disgorgement.
A Brut Nature, crafted without dosage, is a rare treasure, produced only in the finest vintages and in limited quantities. This wine unveils the subtle nuances of the Pinot Noir grapes grown in Zenevredo's soils, capturing their adaptable and exclusive character. The result is a sparkling wine of elegant charm, evoking the gentle hills of Oltrepò. Its varied expression and harmony with the slow passage of time are its defining themes. After 48 months of ageing, the Brut Nature reveals exquisite aromas and delights with a captivating texture on the palate.
The agricultural year of 2019 in the Oltrepò region and Oltrenero vineyards was marked by exceptional grape quality, with yields per hectare consistent with previous years. Following a mild spring and a warm yet sufficiently rainy summer, the grapes reached optimal ripeness. The harvest for the Pinot Noir base wine began on 13th August. The wines of the 2019 vintage excel in delicate aromatic expression, remarkable complexity, and vibrant acidity—qualities that ensure excellent longevity.
The Oltrenero Brut Nature DOCG 2019 boasts a radiant, pale straw-yellow hue interwoven with delicate golden reflections, accentuating its elegance. A fine, soft crown of foam and extraordinarily delicate effervescence lend it unparalleled sophistication. From the first impression, it reveals a stunning complexity and depth: subtle notes of freshly baked bread crust harmoniously merge with mineral hints and floral nuances of rose and acacia. The fruity aromas, emblematic of this noble red grape variety, vividly evoke red berries such as currants and raspberries. These are accompanied by invigorating citrus notes and an enticing hint of sweet pastry that completes its aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine presents itself as full-bodied, with lively spice and a refreshing citrus note that ensures perfect balance. The finish, characterised by delicate almond and toasted notes, concludes the tasting experience in harmonious fashion, leaving a lasting impression of finesse and elegance.
At an ideal serving temperature of approximately 8 to 10°C, the Brut Nature DOCG 2019 from Oltrenero is an outstanding aperitif that pairs effortlessly with refined appetisers, adding a touch of style to any occasion. With its finely tuned structure, it proves to be a true all-rounder, complementing an entire menu with ease. Whether fine risottos, delicately balanced pasta dishes, exquisite seafood, or delicate sushi—its elegance shines through. Even when paired with meat dishes, it showcases its versatility, offering sophisticated nuances that elevate the culinary experience to perfection.

Grape variety
PINOT NERO
The Pinot Nero from Lombardy, also known as Pinot Noir, combines elegance and freshness in a truly unique way. In cooler wine-growing regions such as Oltrepò Pavese, this distinguished grape variety reaches its full potential, producing finely nuanced red wines with fruity notes of cherry, strawberry, and spices. Particularly noteworthy is its exceptional role in Spumante production using the Metodo Classico technique, where it delivers fresh, mineral sparkling wines with delicate and long-lasting effervescence. The chalky and clay-rich soils of the region significantly enhance the complexity and finesse of these wines. Originally, this grape variety hails from France, specifically Burgundy, where it has been cultivated for over 2,000 years and is regarded as one of the oldest and most noble grape varieties worldwide. In Lombardy, Pinot Nero also boasts a long tradition, particularly in the Oltrepò Pavese region, which has established itself as one of Italy's most important areas for cultivating this grape. Its introduction to the region dates back to the 19th century, when winemakers from Piedmont and France laid the groundwork for its cultivation. The combination of a cool climate and chalky soils provided Pinot Nero with ideal conditions that helped shape its unique character. While initially used mainly for red wine production, the 20th century saw a growing popularity of sparkling wines, leading to increased usage of Pinot Nero in Metodo Classico production. The 1970s and 1980s marked a turning point as the region gained recognition as a leading area for high-quality Pinot Nero sparkling wines. This success was further solidified with the establishment of the DOC Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico in 2007. Today, Lombardy – especially Oltrepò Pavese and Franciacorta – stands at the forefront of Pinot Nero cultivation and production, whether for refined red wines or exquisite sparkling wines. The grape variety itself is renowned for its demanding nature and distinctive qualities. With its vigorous yet compact growth and dense foliage, it requires meticulous care as it is prone to diseases such as mildew and botrytis. Its medium-sized, rounded leaves with slightly serrated edges and softly haired undersides are as characteristic as its small to medium-sized, cylindrical-shaped clusters. The berries, round and thin-skinned, vary in colour from bright red to deep violet depending on their ripeness, and are sensitive to weather conditions. As an early budding and early ripening variety, Pinot Nero is particularly vulnerable to late spring frosts. Its thin skin imparts soft tannins and a refined structure to the wines but also makes it susceptible to rot and temperature fluctuations. For this reason, Pinot Nero thrives best in cool climates with stable conditions, as found in Lombardy, Burgundy, or South Tyrol.
