White wine from Italy
Tenute Ferrocinto is based in Castrovillari, a town halfway between Potenza and Cosenza in the southern Italian region of Calabria. This area, known as "Conca del Re," has been esteemed for its wine production since before Roman times. Surrounded by Italy’s largest national parks, the vineyards here benefit from the significant temperature differences between day and night, providing ideal conditions for the grapes. The vineyard workers maintain the unique characteristics of the terroir by working in perfect harmony with nature. Every day, they make decisions that blend centuries-old traditions with modern technological advancements.
While Calabria is not globally renowned for its white grape varieties, Pecorello is a white grape native to the central-eastern part of Calabria. Despite the similar name, the indigenous Calabrian Pecorello should not be confused with the Pecorino grape from central Italy, which has entirely different characteristics. It is highly probable that the grape was introduced to Calabria by Greek colonists in antiquity. The first historical records date back to the late 19th century, but it wasn't until 1971 that Pecorello was finally included in Italy's national grape catalogue. Wines made from Pecorello grapes have good alcohol content and a pleasant acidity, with moderate aromatic persistence and a fresh, pleasantly fruity palate.
The harvest of this nearly forgotten grape variety is done by hand at the beginning of September. To prevent spontaneous fermentation, the grapes are swiftly transported to the winery, where they are immediately destemmed. This is followed by a quick winemaking process, including pressing and fermentation. Finally, the wine undergoes a six-month maturation period in stainless steel tanks.
The Pecorello Calabria IGP from Tenute Ferrocinto appears in the glass as a radiant straw yellow, with bright golden highlights. On the nose, this rare white wine reveals a complex array of aromas that are hard to pin down, with fresh citrus notes prominently featured. On the palate, the Calabrian wine is dry, robust, and distinctly spicy. Delicately nuanced pear aromas accompany the taste, leading to a long, elegant finish.
At an optimal serving temperature of around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, this Pecorello from southern Italy reveals its full potential and is excellent as an aperitif. It also adds an exquisite note to light Italian appetizers, perfectly rounding off the tasting experience. Furthermore, this elegant white wine pairs particularly well with fish dishes, especially freshwater fish, offering a true delight for the palate. Its versatility makes it an ideal companion for various culinary occasions, from simple bites to sophisticated fish dishes.

Grape variety
PECORELLO
The Pecorello is an indigenous white grape variety predominantly grown in the southern Italian region of Calabria. In recent years, this variety has experienced a revival as vintners in Calabria and beyond recognise and promote its potential. The exact origin of Pecorello is difficult to pinpoint, but it is believed to have been cultivated in this region for centuries. The name "Pecorello" means "little sheep" in Italian. It is thought that this name either derives from the shape of the grapes or from the fact that sheep often grazed in the vineyards. Historical records of Pecorello are sparse, suggesting that the variety was long forgotten or only locally known. It was often grown alongside other local grape varieties and used in blends rather than being produced as a single-varietal wine. However, modern viticulture techniques and a heightened appreciation for regional varieties have led to Pecorello being more widely cultivated and made into single-varietal wines. The leaves of the Pecorello vine are medium-sized, typically round or slightly heart-shaped. They are five-lobed, with the lobes moderately deeply incised. The leaf surface is slightly wavy, light green, and has a fine downy underside. The grape clusters are comparatively large, conically shaped, and often loosely packed. The berries are small, slightly oval, and have a thin but firm skin. Their colour ranges from greenish-yellow to golden yellow when fully ripe. The flesh is juicy and has a balanced flavour with a slight acidity. Pecorello is well adapted to the Mediterranean climate of Calabria, with its hot, dry summers and mild winters. Careful cultivation can result in high-quality grapes and thus excellent wines. Pecorello wines are generally light to medium-bodied and are suitable both as single-varietal wines and in blends.
