Pollino Bianco Terre di Cosenza DOP Calabria 2024
Description
Pollino Bianco Terre di Cosenza DOP Calabria 2024 / Ferrocinto / Calabria
White wine from Italy
The Pollino Bianco DOP 2024 from Tenute Ferrocinto is a refined white wine from southern Italy, showcasing the rare indigenous Mantonico grape in its purest expression. The estate is in Castrovillari, at the heart of the historic “Conca del Re” winegrowing region, nestled between Potenza and Cosenza. Surrounded by Italy’s largest national parks, the vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate with continental influences and pronounced diurnal temperature shifts - ideal conditions for producing aromatic, fresh white wines.
Mantonico thrives on calcareous, mineral-rich soils with clay and sand components. The vines were planted in 2002 at an altitude of approximately 500 metres, enjoying optimal sun exposure. Harvesting takes place by hand in the early mornings of October, with grapes carefully placed in small crates to preserve their integrity. After gentle destemming, the fruit is softly pressed under nitrogen. Selected yeasts are deliberately omitted to preserve the authentic character of the grape and its terroir. Fermentation is temperature-controlled at a maximum of 16°C, followed by six months of maturation on fine lees.
In the glass, Pollino Bianco reveals a pale straw-yellow hue with greenish highlights and crystalline brilliance. The bouquet is layered and expressive: citrus notes of lime and grapefruit mingle with white blossom, ripe pear and yellow apple, underpinned by a subtle mineral edge. On the palate, the wine is slender and precise, with vibrant acidity, saline minerality and a whisper of bitter almond on the finish. The aftertaste is clean, dry and delicately spiced - a harmonious, effortlessly drinkable white with a fruit-forward profile and elegant structure.
Served at 8 to 10°C, Pollino Bianco is a superb choice as an aperitif and pairs beautifully with Mediterranean starters, fish dishes, vegetable medleys and mild cheeses. Its stylistic clarity, terroir-driven depth and use of the native Mantonico grape make it a true ambassador of Calabria - perfect for wine lovers who value character and provenance.

Grape variety
MANTONICO
The indigenous white grape variety Mantonico is a true gem of Calabria – that sun-kissed region in southern Italy renowned for its authentic character and deeply rooted winemaking tradition. The area boasts a Mediterranean climate, where long, warm summers and mild winters prevail. These climatic conditions allow the grapes to develop their aromas to an intense degree and ensure a prolonged ripening phase—an essential factor that bestows the wines of this region with their unmistakable finesse. The undulating landscape and steep slopes of Calabria provide ideal conditions for viticulture. Thanks to natural drainage and mineral-rich, often volcanic soils, the Mantonico vine thrives under optimal conditions. These sites not only protect the vines from excessive moisture but also promote robust root development, ultimately yielding grapes that are both strong and aromatic. With a long and storied history stretching back to antiquity, the Mantonico grape occupies a distinguished place in Calabria’s cultural heritage. Historical accounts even suggest that it may once have been related to the Malvasia grape—a connection that underscores the remarkable potential and versatility of this native variety. For centuries, Mantonico has been carefully cultivated and refined, rendering it a symbol of regional identity and tradition. The physical characteristics of the Mantonico vine further highlight its adaptability. Its leaves are generally medium to large in size, distinguished by their oval to round shape, while the grapes themselves are of medium to large size with an elegant, conical form. These features are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, as they enable the leaves to capture adequate sunlight and provide the grapes with optimal growing conditions. It is particularly noteworthy that the Mantonico vine favours warm and sunny environments. Thus, it finds its perfect home on the sun-drenched slopes of Calabria, where it benefits from intense sunlight while the cooling influence of higher altitudes meets its needs. This synergy results in a harmonious balance between freshness and intense aromaticity—qualities that define the wines produced from Mantonico and offer a truly exceptional tasting experience. In summary, the Mantonico grape is not merely a significant cultural treasure but also an embodiment of the profound connection between nature, climate, and human craftsmanship. The seamless interplay of meticulously matched terroir, time-honoured winemaking traditions, and the unique character of this grape variety makes it an unmistakable jewel in Mediterranean viticulture, captivating both enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
