White wine from Italy

Tenute Ferrocinto is based in the town of Castrovillari, halfway between the cities of Potenza and Cosenza in Calabria in southern Italy. The area is also called "Conca del Re" and was known as a wine-growing landscape even before the appearance of the Romans. Surrounded by the largest Italian national parks, the vines find ideal conditions here because there are large temperature differences between day and night. The work of people in the vineyard preserves the characteristics of the terroir by working in perfect harmony with nature. In doing so, they must make a daily choice that ultimately leads to a result that represents a perfect synthesis between centuries-old tradition and new technological achievements.

The indigenous white grape variety Mantonico comes from the Calabria region in southern Italy. This region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm summers and mild winters. The hilly landscape and slopes in Calabria offer ideal conditions for viticulture. The Mantonico has a long history and may have been related to the Malvasia grape in the past. The leaves of the vine plant are usually medium to large and oval to round in shape. The clusters of the Mantonico vine are medium to large in size and have a conical shape. This grape variety prefers warm and sunny climates, which is why it also finds a perfect habitat in Calabria, where it is grown on hills or slopes. Tenuta Ferrocinto grows its Montonico grapes at an average altitude of 500m above sea level. on soils with medium texture and high iron and magnesium content. Of course, when the vines were planted in 2002, care was taken to ensure perfect sun exposure.

The harvest takes place in the morning hours of the first ten days of October of each vintage, with the grapes being placed in small boxes to keep them as intact as possible. After destemming, gentle pressing takes place under nitrogen. No selected yeasts are added to achieve in Pollino Bianco DOP the most faithful expression of the grape variety and the territory. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of no more than 16°C and the subsequent aging on the lees lasts about six months.

The Pollino Bianco DOP from Tenute Ferrocinto appears in the wine glass with a clear straw yellow and exudes an intense aroma with sensations of ripe yellow and exotic fruits, white melon, green banana, pineapple and much more, as well as more subtle but clear scents such as wild herbs, Includes chalk, honey, sweet spices, and sweet almonds. The palate is soft and dry, leaving subtle spaces for a fresh, savoury trail that make this exceptional wine pleasant and highly drinkable. The taste and olfactory match is excellent and underlines the fruity profile. Overall, a sober and well-made white wine that, thanks to its harmony, is hardly tiring.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 10 to 12°C, the Pollino Bianco from southern Italy is ideal as an aperitif. Excellent with Mediterranean starters and light pasta dishes. And of course, this white wine goes perfectly with dishes based on fish and/or vegetables.

Grape variety

MANTONICO

The indigenous white grape variety Mantonico is a true gem of Calabria – that sun-kissed region in southern Italy renowned for its authentic character and deeply rooted winemaking tradition. The area boasts a Mediterranean climate, where long, warm summers and mild winters prevail. These climatic conditions allow the grapes to develop their aromas to an intense degree and ensure a prolonged ripening phase—an essential factor that bestows the wines of this region with their unmistakable finesse. The undulating landscape and steep slopes of Calabria provide ideal conditions for viticulture. Thanks to natural drainage and mineral-rich, often volcanic soils, the Mantonico vine thrives under optimal conditions. These sites not only protect the vines from excessive moisture but also promote robust root development, ultimately yielding grapes that are both strong and aromatic. With a long and storied history stretching back to antiquity, the Mantonico grape occupies a distinguished place in Calabria’s cultural heritage. Historical accounts even suggest that it may once have been related to the Malvasia grape—a connection that underscores the remarkable potential and versatility of this native variety. For centuries, Mantonico has been carefully cultivated and refined, rendering it a symbol of regional identity and tradition. The physical characteristics of the Mantonico vine further highlight its adaptability. Its leaves are generally medium to large in size, distinguished by their oval to round shape, while the grapes themselves are of medium to large size with an elegant, conical form. These features are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, as they enable the leaves to capture adequate sunlight and provide the grapes with optimal growing conditions. It is particularly noteworthy that the Mantonico vine favours warm and sunny environments. Thus, it finds its perfect home on the sun-drenched slopes of Calabria, where it benefits from intense sunlight while the cooling influence of higher altitudes meets its needs. This synergy results in a harmonious balance between freshness and intense aromaticity—qualities that define the wines produced from Mantonico and offer a truly exceptional tasting experience. In summary, the Mantonico grape is not merely a significant cultural treasure but also an embodiment of the profound connection between nature, climate, and human craftsmanship. The seamless interplay of meticulously matched terroir, time-honoured winemaking traditions, and the unique character of this grape variety makes it an unmistakable jewel in Mediterranean viticulture, captivating both enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
