Description

Prosecco Frizzante Green Label DOC / Cantine Riondo / Veneto

Frizzante from Italy

Cantine Riondo is based in the heart of the Soave region between Verona and Venice. Although it was only founded in 2008 as a wine cooperative, it is now one of the most important wine producers in Veneto. The corporate structure seems complicated but is in fact very simple: two thousand winemakers cultivate 6000 hectares of vineyards in the provinces of Verona, Vicenza and Padua and give the harvested grapes to five wineries for subsequent vinification.

Already in ancient times, Prosecco was very popular with the Romans, who called it Vinum Pucinum and came mainly from the area north of today's city of Trieste. This wine has its current name from the village of Prosecco, which belongs to the municipality of Trieste. The name has nothing to do with the Italian adjective secco (dry), but with the Slavic proseku (deforested area).

Until the end of 2009, Prosecco was the name of a white grape variety, now to be called Glera, which grows only in north-eastern Italy in a small region of the province of Treviso in the Veneto region. Since January 1st, 2010, Prosecco has been a designation of origin according to the decree of the Italian Minister of Agriculture.

After the harvest, in the first weeks of September, the grapes undergo a cold maceration and primary fermentation at a controlled temperature of 16ºC. Finally, there is a short secondary fermentation in pressure-tight containers, the so-called autoclaves. Here the wine gets its famous pearls.

The Riondo Prosecco Frizzante Green Label DOC is a lush, fruity, and lean wine with excellent floral notes, persistent effervescence, and a clean, delicate finish. This crystal clear, pure frizzante has a perfect body and weight. With its straw yellow colour, it conjures up notes of flowers, apples and pears on the palate.

At an ideal drinking temperature of approximately 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, the splendid Prosecco Frizzante from Riondo unveils its full potential. Traditionally served in a slender flute glass to accentuate the effervescence and aroma optimally, when enjoyed as an aperitif before a meal, it stimulates the appetite and gracefully commences the dining experience. Its zesty, light character also renders it a versatile companion for various occasions and dishes. The Riondo Prosecco harmonizes wonderfully with light starters such as bruschetta, antipasti, Caprese salad, and other Mediterranean delicacies. Its fresh effervescence pairs excellently with seafood such as oysters, prawns, mussels, and grilled fish. Additionally, mild cheeses like mozzarella, brie, camembert, and goat cheese find a delectable companion in its presence. Overall, Prosecco is a popular companion for celebrations, receptions, and convivial gatherings, imbuing every occasion with an air of ease and festivity. The enthusiasm of many renowned wine critics confirms its excellent reputation.

Grape variety

Grape GLERA (PROSECCO)

The Glera grape, a traditional variety of the Veneto region, is primarily used in the production of Prosecco. Its origins stretch deep into the history of the northeastern Italian region of Veneto. For centuries, it thrived on the gentle slopes around Treviso and Conegliano. While the exact origin story of Glera is not fully documented, it is believed to have its roots in this region, long renowned for its excellent wines. Originally, the grape variety was called Prosecco, named after the village of the same name in the area. However, in the 2000s, it was decided to officially rename it Glera. This was done to avoid confusion and to reserve the name Prosecco for the protected designation of origin of the wine. Historically, Prosecco was produced as a still wine. However, with the introduction of the Charmat method in the early 20th century, the production of sparkling wines began. In this method, the second fermentation takes place in a pressure tank to capture carbon dioxide and carbonate the wine. The leaves of the Glera plant are medium-sized, round, and of a shiny green colour. The grapes are typically large and have a conical shape. Loosely arranged, they are well-ventilated and therefore less susceptible to diseases. Mostly yellow green in colour, the berries have a juicy, sweet taste with subtle aromas. The Glera plant thrives in moderate climatic conditions with warm summers and mild winters. An ideal climate and optimal soils with good drainage are typically found in the hills of Veneto. Winemakers use traditional cultivation techniques to preserve the quality of Glera grapes. Vineyards are lovingly tended, and the grapes are harvested by hand to select only the best. Prosecco has since become a globally esteemed sparkling wine. It is enjoyed in many countries and is known for its fresh, fruity character as well as its excellent value for money.
