Description

Prosecco Rosé Millesimato Brut DOC 2024 / Le Manzane / Veneto

Sparkling wine from Italy

The agricultural enterprise Le Manzane, founded in the mid-20th century in San Pietri di Faletto, located in the picturesque Valdobbiadene region, is a family business rich in tradition. For three generations, the family has passionately and lovingly dedicated itself to the art of winemaking. This dedication has enabled them to pass down traditions and craftsmanship from generation to generation. Le Manzane is particularly renowned for its exquisite Prosecco varieties, which meet the highest standards in both diversity and quality.

Glera is a white grape variety that thrives exclusively in the northeast of Italy, in the small region of the Province of Treviso in Veneto. It is primarily used to produce sparkling and semi-sparkling wines, but also still wines. As far back as antiquity, Glera was known as vinum Puclnum and was highly popular. A significant red wine variety is Pinot Nero, considered to be of high quality. In various wine-growing regions, it is also known as Blauburgunder, Schwarzburgunder, or Pinot Noir. An interesting fun fact is that this grape variety plays an important role as a blending partner in the production of Champagne.

When perfectly blended together, wines from these two grape varieties create a wonderful Prosecco Rosé. However, before it can be enjoyed in its full glory, it must be refined into a sparkling wine using the Charmat method (Italian: Metodo Martinotti). On 20 May 2020, the wine committee of the Ministry of Agriculture in Rome approved the introduction of the DOC Rosé typology. Prosecco DOC Rosé is made by blending the main Glera variety with a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 15 percent Pinot Nero, the only red grape variety permitted by the regulations. The secondary fermentation must last at least two months, which is twice as long as for white Prosecco DOC. The wines are classified in the taste profiles of "brut nature," "brut," and "extra dry," and are released as Millesimato, meaning vintage dated.

Immediately after the grapes are hand-harvested, they are transported to the winery, where they are gently pressed and fermented at a controlled temperature of 13 degrees Celsius in stainless steel tanks. The alcoholic fermentation then begins at a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius. After the subsequent racking, the wine matures for two months in steel tanks. This is followed by a second fermentation in autoclaves for about 30 days at temperatures of 14 to 15 degrees Celsius, and a further refinement for another month in the autoclaves. After the final filtration, the Prosecco is bottled. A bottle ageing period of at least thirty days finally gives this sparkling wine its finishing touch.

Prosecco Rosé Millesimato Brut enchants with its lively and stimulating effervescence. On the nose, it unfolds a fruity aroma with a fine hint of wild berries that captivates the senses. On the palate, this Prosecco is dry, fresh, and sparkling, with a subtly bitter aftertaste that harmoniously completes the tasting experience.

When well-chilled to a drinking temperature of about 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, the Prosecco Rosé from Le Manzane reveals its full potential and is the perfect aperitif. It is an excellent companion to light pasta dishes, soups, seafood, fresh cheeses, and white meats. Summer is on its way!

Grape variety

GLERA (PROSECCO)

The Glera grape, a traditional variety of the Veneto region, is primarily used in the production of Prosecco. Its origins stretch deep into the history of the northeastern Italian region of Veneto. For centuries, it thrived on the gentle slopes around Treviso and Conegliano. While the exact origin story of Glera is not fully documented, it is believed to have its roots in this region, long renowned for its excellent wines. Originally, the grape variety was called Prosecco, named after the village of the same name in the area. However, in the 2000s, it was decided to officially rename it Glera. This was done to avoid confusion and to reserve the name Prosecco for the protected designation of origin of the wine. Historically, Prosecco was produced as a still wine. However, with the introduction of the Charmat method in the early 20th century, the production of sparkling wines began. In this method, the second fermentation takes place in a pressure tank to capture carbon dioxide and carbonate the wine. The leaves of the Glera plant are medium-sized, round, and of a shiny green colour. The grapes are typically large and have a conical shape. Loosely arranged, they are well-ventilated and therefore less susceptible to diseases. Mostly yellow green in colour, the berries have a juicy, sweet taste with subtle aromas. The Glera plant thrives in moderate climatic conditions with warm summers and mild winters. An ideal climate and optimal soils with good drainage are typically found in the hills of Veneto. Winemakers use traditional cultivation techniques to preserve the quality of Glera grapes. Vineyards are lovingly tended, and the grapes are harvested by hand to select only the best. Prosecco has since become a globally esteemed sparkling wine. It is enjoyed in many countries and is known for its fresh, fruity character as well as its excellent value for money.

PINOT NERO

The Pinot Nero, also known as Pinot Noir, is a demanding and noble grape variety cultivated in many wine regions around the world. In Veneto, one of Italy’s most significant wine regions, Pinot Nero exhibits some special qualities and characteristics influenced by the region’s specific terroir and climate. Originally hailing from Burgundy, one of the most famous wine regions in the world, the earliest records of this grape variety date back to the 1st century AD, when the Romans introduced viticulture to the region. During the Middle Ages, Cistercian and Benedictine monks promoted the cultivation of Pinot Noir and perfected viticulture methods. Throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Pinot Noir gradually spread to other parts of Europe, particularly to nearby regions such as Champagne, where it became a crucial component in the production of sparkling wine. In Veneto, the cultivation of Pinot Nero began in the early 20th century. The region sought ways to diversify its wine portfolio and produce high-quality wines that could be competitive in the international market. The cool hills and diverse terroir of Veneto proved ideal for growing Pinot Nero. Today, Pinot Nero is an established grape variety in Veneto, used both in varietal wines and in blends. The leaves of the Pinot Nero plant are medium-sized, rounded, and deeply lobed. They have a rich green colour that can vary depending on location and climate. The grape clusters are medium-sized and loosely packed. The berries themselves are relatively small, rounded, and have thin skins. They ripen relatively early and range in colour from dark blue to black blue, depending on their stage of ripeness and vineyard location. The berries of the Pinot Nero vine are characterised by a complex aroma, encompassing notes of red fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, and cherries, along with subtle floral and spicy nuances. The combination of a long history, ideal growing conditions in Veneto, and unique aromatic profile makes Pinot Nero a fascinating grape variety that is cherished both in Veneto and worldwide.
