Description

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2020 / Rocca Bernarda / Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Red wine from Italy

The Rocca Bernarda winery is one of the oldest wineries in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and was founded in 1567 by Bernardo di Valvason Maniago. In the present it is managed by the Order of the Knights of Malta. The cultivated vineyards cover around fifty hectares, the majority of which are newly planted, with a planting density of around 5,500 vines, and using material derived from clone selection and mass selection carried out on the farm. n this way, the new vines are already acclimatized to the terroir and the quality is optimized.

The red Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso variety is a subspecies of the Refosco variety, which is itself an ancient grape variety of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and thrives excellently on karst soils. The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso has been known since the 18th century and differs from its mother variety in its red stems, from which it also got its name.

The Rocca Bernarda Refosco is grown in a hilly area called the Colli Orientali del Friuli, at an average altitude of 150 m asl. Half of the soil here is limestone and clay and the other half is made up of sand and clay, which is ideal for viticulture. Cultivated with the Cappuccina (double arch) and Guyot training systems, the Refosco grapes are harvested very late in the year and transported to the winery. To ensure optimal extraction of colour and tannins, maceration takes place in stainless steel tanks and lasts at least ten days. Then the alcoholic fermentation ends with the racking of the wine and the malolactic fermentation begins, which will give the wine its smoothness and roundness. The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli Colli Orientali DOC receives its final refinement through eight months of aging in stainless steel tanks.

The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso from the Rocca Bernarda winery presents itself in a beautiful wine glass with a strong ruby red colour with violet reflections. The bouquet is intense and penetrating, transporting notes of blackberries and wild berries. The taste of this little-known red wine is dry, enveloping, and velvety. The tannins stay in the background and are accompanied by a pleasant acidity. The finish is persistent with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

Refosco is a robust red wine distinguished by its rich tannins and diverse aromas. Its optimal serving temperature is around 18 to 19 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal companion for dishes of intensity and structure. It particularly excels when paired with grilled meats, be it beef, lamb, or game. The smoky notes from the grilling process harmoniously meld with the wine's structure. Due to its complex flavours and robust tannins, Refosco is also superbly suited for game dishes such as venison, wild boar, or deer. The wine's structure adeptly balances the rich aromas of game meat. A robust meat sauce pairs exceptionally well with pasta, as the wine's tannins complement the hearty notes of the sauce perfectly. A strong cheese, preferably an aged hard cheese like Parmesan or Pecorino, forms an exquisite accompaniment to a Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso. The wine's structure can counterbalance the spicy intensity of the cheese. For vegetarians or as a complement to meat dishes, grilled vegetables are recommended. Their roasted flavours and freshness create a harmonious connection with the wine. Tomato sauces in pasta or on pizza pair excellently with Refosco, especially when enhanced with herbs and savoury spices. For dessert enthusiasts, dark chocolate with a higher cocoa content is recommended, as the wine's tannins can beautifully interact with the chocolate's bitterness.

Grape variety

REFOSCO DAL PEDUNCOLO ROSSO

The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, an indigenous red grape variety, traces its origins primarily to the picturesque region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in north-eastern Italy. The distinctive name "Refosco" refers to the grape family, encompassing various local variations, while the additional attribute "dal Peduncolo Rosso" alludes to the red stems of the grapes, a characteristic feature of this captivating vine. The roots of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso extend back to antiquity, with the belief that the Romans introduced and cultivated this grape in the region. During the Middle Ages, viticulture flourished here, driven by monasteries and noble families. Local farmers and vintners began cultivating their own vines, and the Refosco grape emerged as one of the region's most significant indigenous varieties. In the latter half of the 20th century, the wine industry in Friuli-Venezia Giulia experienced a veritable renaissance, with the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso grape regaining prominence. State-of-the-art winemaking techniques and an enhanced focus on quality contributed to the international acclaim of wines produced from this grape. The leaves of the Refosco vine are characterized by their medium to large size, green colour, and five-lobed shape with serrated edges. The vine itself is typically medium to large, boasting a robust structure. The grapes of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso are medium to small and exhibit a cylindrical form, with a distinctive feature being the red stems that provide an additional visual allure. The berries are small to medium-sized, displaying a dark blue to black colour, with the thick skin contributing to a rich concentration of pigments. The grape variety thrives in well-draining soils and a moderate climate. Friuli-Venezia Giulia provides ideal conditions for cultivating Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, influenced both by the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. Grapes from this variety are renowned for their robust flavours and the ability to produce complex wines with rich tannins. These wines often present notes of dark berries, spices, and a well-balanced acidity.
