Red wine from Italy
Ca’ Bolani is an estate adorned with an impressive avenue of 999 cypress trees, celebrating and safeguarding exceptional biodiversity. Situated in the picturesque region of Aquileia, just south of Udine in the far northeast of Italy, it nestles between the majestic Alps and the Adriatic Sea. This area, renowned for viticulture since Roman times, provides the Ca' Bolani winery with ideal conditions for crafting premium wines. Thanks to summer sea breezes, the protective embrace of the Alps, significant temperature variations, and diverse soils ranging from clay and gravelly substrates to sandy coastal soils, uniquely characterful wines thrive here. Ca’ Bolani estate has preserved a valuable viticultural heritage, embodied in a "vineyard garden." This distinctive environment contributes to the production of wines notable for their aromatic finesse and richness.
The red wine grape variety Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is a sub-variety of the Refosco grape, itself an ancient vine native to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, thriving notably well on karstic soils. Known since the 18th century, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso distinguishes itself from its parent variety by its red-stemmed grapes, from which it derives its name. This rather rare grape yields garnet-hued wines, rich in acidity and tannins, with a fruity bouquet.
The manual grape harvest takes place during the first ten days of October each year, when the vines reach their full maturity, and the grapes unfold their optimal flavor development. Following a meticulous harvest, the grapes are gently destemmed and softly pressed to release the precious juice. Vinification of the must then commences in the winery's vertical wine tanks, where the wine undergoes fermentation for eight to twelve days at controlled temperatures, with constant agitation. This process allows for maximum extraction of flavors and tannins from the grapes. Following the completion of malolactic fermentation, which occurs in the winery's steel tanks and contributes to the wine's smoothness and complexity, the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is aged in carefully selected oak barrels, imparting an additional nuance of structure and character to the wine.
The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli DOC Aquileia from Ca' Bolani presents itself in the glass with a captivating, intense red hue, streaked with shimmering violet reflections that immediately engage the senses. Its bouquet is marked by remarkable intensity, where the aromas of ripe sour cherry jam harmoniously interweave with subtle spice notes. In the background, a delicate nuance of fresh grass and aromatic resin unfolds, lending the wine an additional dimensional depth. On the palate, this Refosco reveals itself as a dry, robust wine, simultaneously disclosing a fruity abundance. Its origin from northeastern Italy imparts a remarkable freshness that invigorates and enlivens the palate. The tannins are gentle and well-integrated, while the finish is enduring and impressive, leaving a lasting impression.
Best served at an optimal temperature of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius (during warmer temperatures, slightly cooler at around 14 to 16 degrees Celsius is recommended), the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Friuli DOC Aquileia from Ca' Bolani, with its enchanting fruitiness, is an ideal companion for the entire meal. It also pairs well with appetizers, meat dishes with sauces, and semi-aged to mature cheeses. Additionally, it makes for a delightful aperitif or a contemplative wine after dinner.

Grape variety
REFOSCO DAL PEDUNCOLO ROSSO
The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, an indigenous red grape variety, originates primarily in the picturesque region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northeastern Italy. The distinctive name "Refosco" refers to the grape family, which includes various local variations. The additional attribute "dal Peduncolo Rosso" refers to the red stems of the grapes, a characteristic feature of this fascinating vine. The roots of the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso trace back to antiquity, with Romans believed to have introduced and cultivated this grape variety in the region. During the Middle Ages, viticulture here experienced a surge, driven by monasteries and noble families. Local farmers and winemakers began planting their own vines, and the Refosco grape became one of the region's most significant indigenous varieties. In the latter half of the 20th century, the wine industry in Friuli-Venezia Giulia experienced a true renaissance, with the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso grape variety regaining prominence. State-of-the-art winemaking techniques and an increased focus on quality contributed to wines from this grape gaining international recognition. The leaves of the Refosco vine are characterized by their medium to large, green, five-lobed shape, with serrated edges. The vine itself presents as medium to large with a robust structure. The grapes of the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso are medium to small-sized and have a cylindrical shape. A distinctive feature is the red stems, which provide an additional visual allure. The berries are small to medium-sized, exhibiting a dark blue to black colour, with the thick skin contributing to a rich pigment concentration. The grape variety favours well-draining soils and a moderate climate. Friuli-Venezia Giulia offers ideal conditions for the cultivation of Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, as the region is influenced by both the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. The grapes of this variety are renowned for their bold flavours and the ability to produce complex wines with rich tannins. Often, the wines showcase notes of dark berries, spices, and a balanced acidity.
