Description

"Ruggiero" Syrah Sicilia DOC 2017 / Assuli / Sicily

Red wine from Italy

The Assuli winery is in the tranquil town of Mazara del Vallo between the towns of Marsala and Agrigento in western Sicily. In the course of time, a beautiful company site has developed here, which emerged from a half-timbered complex from the 18th century. Surrounded by rolling hills, modern functionality is combined with a strong connection to the territory.

Syrah is not a very high yielding, but a high-quality red grape variety that originally comes from the Middle East. Due to its widespread cultivation in France, it became world famous. The vine has become so important and so sought after that it has moved up into the nobility of the wine world and is known as a noble vine. Syrah wines usually have a strong currant aroma. With normal maceration, the vine produces a dark-coloured wine with a high tannin content, which needs to be aged in the bottle for a long time to reduce the astringency.

The vineyards of the Assuli winery for the “Ruggiero” Syrah Sicilia DOC are in the heart of western Sicily, between the cities of Mazara del Vallo and Trapani, at an altitude between 100 and 150m above sea level, where an island-Mediterranean climate with mild winters and breezy summers prevails. The vines are laid out with the spur-cordon system with a medium to high density of plants on the clay soils with a good lime content and a balanced content of organic elements and nitrogen.

The grapes are harvested at the end of August to the beginning of September each year, with strict attention being paid to the ripeness of the grapes. The vinification begins with the destemming and the gentle pressing of the grapes. The fermentation then takes ten to fifteen days, depending on the vintage, at a controlled fermentation temperature of 26°C. Constant pumping takes place during the extraction. The subsequent malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks lasts three to four months before this Sicilian Syrah has to rest in the bottle for at least three to four months.

The "Ruggiero" Syrah Sicilia DOC from Assuli shines in the glass with an intense ruby red with purple reflections. Its bouquet contains intense aromas of spices, liquorice, pepper, and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, the “Ruggiero” is dry, spicy and has a subtle freshness. Its finale is long-lasting and also very spicy.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 17 to 18 ° C, this fresh and hearty red wine from Sicily goes perfectly with fresh pasta with meat sauces, red meat from the grill, game, sausages, and spicy cheeses.

Grape variety

SYRAH

The Syrah grape variety, also known as Shiraz, is a red grape variety that is grown in many wine regions around the world due to its adaptability to different terroirs and climate conditions. Its origins are not clearly established, but it is generally believed to have originated in the Rhone Valley in France. The name "Syrah" may be derived from the Persian city of Shiraz, from where the vine may have been brought to the Rhône region. There are also theories pointing to Greek or Roman origins, but the exact origin remains unclear. The leaves of the Syrah plant are medium to large, dark green and elliptical in shape. They are often lobed, meaning they may have serrated edges or incisions. Its grapes are medium-sized, compact, and conical in shape. The berries are rounded and dark to purple in colour. The Syrah plant has an upright growth habit with strong shoots. The vines can reach a considerable size and their leaves provide sufficient shade to protect the grapes from excessive sunlight. The soils of Sicily, with their volcanic soils rich in minerals, form a good basis for growing Syrah. The habitat is rounded off by a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. Typically, Syrah wines from Sicily are characterized by dark fruit aromas such as blackcurrant, plum and blackberry. They can also have spicy notes of black pepper, spices, and floral nuances.
