Description

“Serra delle Ciavole” Aglianico Calabria IGP 2019 / Ferrocinto / Calabria

Red wine from Italy

Tenute Ferrocinto is based in the town of Castrovillari, halfway between the cities of Potenza and Cosenza in Calabria in southern Italy. The area is also called "Conca del Re" and was known as a wine-growing landscape even before the appearance of the Romans. Surrounded by the largest Italian national parks, the vines find ideal conditions here because there are large temperature differences between day and night. The work of people in the vineyard preserves the characteristics of the terroir by working in perfect harmony with nature. In doing so, they have to make a daily choice that ultimately leads to a result that represents a perfect synthesis between centuries-old tradition and new technological achievements.

The Aglianico is a red grape variety that is mainly grown in southern Italy. It was introduced to Italy by the Greeks as "vitis hellenica" more than 2500 years ago and then quickly found widespread use. Today it is considered to be one of the best grape varieties in southern Italy.

The grapes for the "Serra del Ciavole" Aglianico Calabria IGP thrive on a plateau (500m above sea level) at the foot of the Monte Pollino Mountain range, in the immediate vicinity of the largest Italian national park. Here the soils are extremely calcareous, and the plants benefit from the large temperature differences between day and night.

The manual harvest takes place at the end of October of the respective year. Then the mash fermentation takes place in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 25 to 20°C. The aging of this Aglianicos in French oak barrels takes twelve months. Before this red wine is marketed, it must rest in its bottle for at least six months. The result is a wonderful wine made from the Calabrian version of the Aglianico, of which only a very limited number are made.

This fine barrique wine is ruby red and has a violet shimmer in the light. Its fragrance is complex with hints of bitter cherries and typical southern Italian herbs. In the background there are nuances of vanilla. On the palate, this Aglianico is dry, elegant, and subtly spicy. The tannins are clearly visible, but the wine remains very balanced overall.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 18 to 20 ° C, the "Serra del Ciavole" Aglianico Calabria IGP from Tenute Ferrocinto goes well with veal in particular and red meats in general. But it is also a good companion to game, pasta with strong sauces and mature cheeses.

Grape variety

AGLIANICO

Aglianico is a red grape that is grown mainly in the Basilicata and Campania. It was introduced more than 2500 years ago by the Greeks as vitis hellenica to Campania and spread up to Puglia and Basilicata. This vine produces well-structures and full-bodied wines with intense tannins and a strong acid. The wines need, because of the high tannin content, some years of maturity to develop their high quality.
