TYROL Weißburgunder Südtirol DOC 2021
Description
"Tyrol" Weißburgunder Südtirol DOC 2021 / Cantina Merano / South-Tirol
White wine from Italy
The Meran Burggräfler Winery was founded in 2010 through the merger of two long‑established cooperatives of the Burggrafenamt. Today it brings together 380 members and cultivates 260 hectares of vineyards stretching from Lana through Meran to Riffian, and from Algund to Kastelbell. In doing so, it represents the entire western wine‑growing region of South Tyrol. At its heart lies uncompromising quality – in the vineyard, in the cellar, and in the glass. Every wine is intended to reflect its origin, defined by transparency, character and authenticity.
The Pinot Bianco grape has a long tradition in South Tyrol and has been successfully cultivated here for more than 150 years. Thriving on the poor soils and sun‑drenched slopes of the Meran area and the Vinschgau valley, it has become the region’s leading white variety. The “Tyrol” Weißburgunder Riserva DOC is a prime example of this development, expressing its South Tyrolean homeland in an unmistakable way. It originates from a single, very old vineyard beneath Schloss Tirol, where steep south‑west facing slopes of up to 50 per cent are defined by dry, nutrient‑poor soils. Protected by dense woodland and cooled at night by the descending winds of the Texel mountains, the vines yield grapes of remarkable concentration and character.
Following careful hand‑harvesting, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks, oak casks and barriques. A partial malolactic fermentation lends harmony to the structure, before the wine matures for eight months on fine lees. The result is a brilliant, pale straw‑yellow Pinot Bianco with a complex bouquet: aromas of apple, pear and honey mingle with fresh nut and a delicate herbal note. On the palate it opens with a creamy texture and subtle richness, balanced by lively acidity and refined hints of oak. Gentle fruit‑bitter nuances lead into a long, harmonious finish with a mineral aftertaste.
The recommended serving temperature is between 10 and 12 °C, slightly warmer than for classic Pinot Bianco, to allow the wine’s full complexity to unfold. Allowing it to breathe briefly before serving further enhances its aromatic depth. The “Tyrol” Weißburgunder is a versatile companion to fine fish such as pike‑perch or sea bass, poultry with herbs, risotto with asparagus or mushrooms, and creamy pasta with truffle. It also pairs beautifully with mild goat’s cheese, robust mountain cheese or smoked varieties, offering elegant balance throughout. Suitable both as an aperitif and for festive occasions, it lends refinement to any convivial evening.
Its cellaring potential extends well beyond immediate enjoyment. Already perfectly balanced, it will gain further depth and Burgundian elegance over the coming years. With proper storage - cool, dark and constant - it can be enjoyed for six to eight years after harvest. The “Tyrol” Weißburgunder Riserva DOC thus stands as a distinguished wine that captures South Tyrol at its finest, adding a special note to every occasion.

- Quality Designation: Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC)
- Grape: 100% Pinot Bianco (Weißburgunder, Pinot Blanc).
- Origin and soil conditions: The vineyards for this Pinot Bianco are situated on a steep south‑west facing slope directly beneath Schloss Tirol, at an altitude of around 500 to 550 metres. The exposed position ensures optimal sunlight while at the same time benefiting from cooling air currents descending from the higher elevations, giving the grapes a finely balanced interplay of ripeness and freshness. The soil consists of light, permeable moraine debris which, though poor in nutrients, provides ideal conditions for producing grapes of concentration and aromatic complexity. The vines, approximately 30 years old, are deeply rooted and naturally limited in yield to about 42 hectolitres per hectare, resulting in wines of distinctive character and firm structure. The terroir thus combines elegance, minerality and expressive power in a truly unique way.
- Vinification: After careful hand‑harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed to preserve their aromatic purity. The resulting must is then fermented in stainless steel tanks, oak casks and barriques, a combination that imparts both freshness and a finely structured complexity. A partial malolactic fermentation follows, harmonising the acidity and lending the wine additional elegance. Finally, an eight‑month maturation on fine lees completes the process, enriching the wine with creamy texture, subtle depth and a balanced interplay of lively freshness and supple structure.
- Scent: The nose reveals itself as multi‑layered and clearly defined. Ripe lime and juicy apple shape the initial impression, enriched by the aromatic fullness of pear, delicately framed by subtle notes of oak. A gentle hint of meadow herbs lends additional freshness to the bouquet and highlights its complex, elegant character.
- Taste: On the palate, the wine opens with a creamy entry and delicate smoothness, lending it an elegant texture. A fresh, juicy acidity provides vibrancy and reinforces its clear definition. Gentle fruit‑bitter nuances accompany the progression towards an exceptionally long finish. The body presents itself as balanced and refined, supported by a dense, mineral structure. The aftertaste is long and harmonious, marked by subtle bitterness and a mineral echo that adds further depth and character to the wine.
- Colour: Bright yellow with delicate greenish nuances.
- Alcohol content: 14.5 % Vol.
- Residual sugar: 2.6 g/l
- Acidity: 6.1 g/l
- Type of closure: Natural cork.
- Serving recommendation: This Pinot Bianco proves to be a versatile companion at the table, showing its strengths particularly alongside refined fish dishes such as pike‑perch or sea bass. It also reveals an elegant harmony when paired with poultry seasoned with fine herbs. Risotto with asparagus or porcini mushrooms finds an ideal counterpart in its fresh structure, as does creamy pasta enriched with truffle. Mild goat’s cheese or robust mountain cheese are balanced with finesse, while smoked varieties highlight its mineral depth. Whether served with grilled fish, chicken or mushroom dishes, this wine impresses with its versatility while retaining a distinctive character. It is equally well suited as an aperitif or as a partner to festive occasions and convivial evenings – a true expression of South Tyrolean perfection.
- Recommended serving temperature: Serve between 10 and 12 °C. Remove from the refrigerator shortly before pouring and use a medium‑sized white wine glass to allow the aromas to unfold at their best.
- Storage potential: The “Tyrol” Weißburgunder Südtirol DOC 2021 possesses remarkable ageing potential, elevating it well beyond immediate freshness to a wine with true capacity for development. Already at present it shows optimal maturity, distinguished by an elegant balance of fruit, acidity and minerality. Over the next three to five years, its creamy texture and subtle oak notes will become more pronounced, while the primary aromas of apple and pear will evolve towards riper nuances with hints of nut. Under ideal conditions, it can be enjoyed for up to six to eight years after harvest, gaining further complexity and a Burgundian depth. Essential to this evolution is consistent, cool and dark storage at around 10 to 12 °C, which preserves its quality and supports its graceful development.

Grape variety
PINOT BIANCO (PINOT BLANC, WEISSBURGUNDER)
Pinot Bianco or Weissburgunder is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir and has its roots in Burgundy, France. The grape variety is believed to have emerged through natural mutations over time. From the Middle Ages onwards, the grape variety spread to various wine-growing regions in Europe. In Italy, Pinot Blanc is known as Pinot Bianco. The variety has become particularly important in the northern Italian regions of South Tyrol, Friuli, and Lombardy. South Tyrol has proven to be ideal for growing Pinot Blanc due to its climatic conditions, where the Mediterranean climate meets Alpine influences. The leaves of the plant are medium-sized, rounded and deeply cut. The surface is shiny and medium green. The leaf stalks often have a reddish colour. The grapes had a slightly conical shape. The berries are medium-sized, round, and greenish yellow in colour. The grapes grow in loosely arranged clusters. The berries of the Pinot Blanc grape are thin-skinned and have a juicy, mild taste. The colour varies from a pale-yellow green to a slightly reddish tone, especially when the grapes are fully ripe. The Pinot Blanc vine tends to grow moderately, and its grapes ripen early. Yields can vary depending on vineyard location and farming methods, but in general yields are moderate. The diversity of vineyards in South Tyrol, ranging from lower altitudes to higher slopes, allows for different expressions of Pinot Blanc to be created depending on where the grapes are grown. Pinot Blanc wines from South Tyrol are often characterized by a fresh and fruity aroma profile. Typical aromas can include citrus fruits such as lemon and green apple, accompanied by subtle floral notes. The pronounced minerality is due to the different soil types in South Tyrol, which gives the wines additional complexity and depth. Pinot Blanc from South Tyrol are often characterized by a lively acidity that gives them freshness and elegance. The combination of ripe fruit and lively acidity makes these wines generally well balanced and refreshing.
