White wine from Italy

Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is an important wine region of Italy. The vineyards are mostly located on the slopes of the mountains and benefit from the Mediterranean climate characterized by hot and dry summers and mild winters. Viticulture is closely linked to Sardinian culture and tradition and reflects the island's unique landscape and history.

The young winemaker Antonella Corda from the village of Serdiana, north of Cagliari on the stunning Mediterranean island of Sardinia, is considered the new discovery of the Italian wine scene. Her red Cannonau has been awarded the coveted "Tre Bicchieri" (Three Glasses) by Gambero Rosso for two consecutive years. The story of Cantina Antonella Corda is closely tied to that of its founder. A childhood spent amidst vineyards, a winemaking family spanning generation, a mother who passed down a love for the land, and a father who instilled a passion for the work. Antonella took over the family tradition and the management of the business in 2010. She transformed it into an innovative project: a boutique winery producing fine Sardinian wines to represent the land around Serdiana on the global stage.

The white grape variety Vermentino is a late-ripening white wine variety that probably has its origins in Italy. The grape is often referred to as the "Mediterranean grape" and is considered one of Italy's finest white wine varieties. The grape variety prefers dry and sunny climates and grows well on sandy, gravelly, and rocky soils.

Antonella Corda's Vermentino di Sardegna DOC hails from a vineyard named "Mitza Manna," situated at an altitude of 200 meters above sea level, spanning six hectares, and planted with native white Vermentino and Nuragus vines. The soil is sandy and clayey, with a considerable amount of calcium enhancing the wines with natural freshness and a floral bouquet. The grapes are hand-harvested into crates at the beginning of September each year and promptly transported to the winery. After crushing, cold maceration begins, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. The final maturation in stainless steel on fine lees lasts for six months.

The production of the organic Vermentino di Sardegna DOC follows specific guidelines covering both viticulture and the vinification process. These methods protect the environment, promote biodiversity, and ensure consumer health. No synthetic chemicals are used in viticulture; instead, natural fertilizers such as compost and manure are employed. Green manure and mulching maintain soil fertility and prevent erosion. Plants like clover and beans enrich the soil with nitrogen. Natural methods like beneficial insects and birdhouses are used for pest control. When necessary, natural substances like copper and sulphur are used against fungal diseases. Many vineyard tasks, including harvesting, are done by hand to ensure careful selection of grapes and to preserve the vines. Hedges, flower meadows, and trees in the vineyard promote biodiversity. During winemaking, grapes are handpicked to select the best and ripest fruits. Fermentation often occurs with natural yeasts to enhance the authenticity and expression of the terroir. Mechanical processes are conducted as gently as possible to preserve the wine's quality. Synthetic additives are avoided, and only minimal amounts of sulphur dioxide are used to ensure longevity. For maturation in oak barrels, un-toasted or minimally toasted barrels are often used to preserve the wine's natural flavour. Strict hygiene practices during bottling and storage minimize the need for chemical stabilizers. To be certified organic, the wine must be inspected and certified by a recognized certification body.

This Vermentino di Sardegna delights the eye with a bright, pale straw-yellow colour. Its first aroma reveals an intense bouquet reminiscent of orange, grapefruit, citrus blossoms, and a hint of sage. On the palate, this Sardinian wine reveals its balanced dry character, underscored by harmoniously integrated acidity. Its softness is wonderfully complemented by warm, subtle nuances, making it a truly special tasting experience.

At a perfect serving temperature of around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, Antonella Corda's Vermentino di Sardegna DOC makes an excellent aperitif. It is an ideal start to a good meal, especially with antipasti and starters, such as a mixed antipasti platter with marinated seafood, grilled vegetables, and olives. A fresh Caprese salad with mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil is perfectly complemented by the freshness of the Vermentino. This Vermentino pairs particularly well with pasta and risotto. Classics like "Spaghetti alle Vongole" (spaghetti with clams) or "Pasta ai Frutti di Mare" (pasta with seafood) harmonize wonderfully with this wine. A seafood risotto or a risotto with lemon and herbs are also excellent choices. The fresh acidity and minerality of the Vermentino pair perfectly with grilled fish such as sea bream, sole, or branzino. Mussels and oysters also benefit from the wine's salty and mineral notes. A Sardinian fish soup, like "Zuppa di Pesce," is wonderfully complemented by the freshness of the Vermentino. Poultry and light meats are further culinary partners for the Vermentino. Grilled or roasted chicken with Mediterranean herbs or lemon chicken and light pork dishes like pork tenderloin or pork chops with herbs and lemon sauce pair excellently. Salads, especially those with seafood such as prawns or squid, also go well with the Vermentino. A mixed salad with fresh herbs, lemon dressing, and crunchy vegetables completes the tasting experience. Finally, cheese pairs well with Antonella Corda's Vermentino. Mild, fresh cheeses like mozzarella, ricotta, or a mild goat cheese, as well as soft cheeses like brie or camembert, are excellent companions, especially when served with fresh bread and fruit.

Grape variety

VERMENTINO

Vermentino is a white grape variety from the Mediterranean region, thriving particularly well in Sardinia. Its origins likely lie in the western Mediterranean, possibly in Spain or Corsica. From there, it spread along the coasts, reaching Liguria in the 14th or 15th century, where it is known as Pigato. In Liguria, the variety found ideal conditions and later spread to Piedmont, where it is called Favorita. In the 19th century, Vermentino arrived in Sardinia, probably via sea routes. On the island, it discovered perfect climatic and geological conditions: a Mediterranean climate, rich soils, and proximity to the sea. These factors favoured the growth and quality of the wines. The Vermentino vine is characterised by medium to large, deep green leaves with a distinctive five-lobed shape. The grapes are cylindrical to conical, sometimes slightly winged, with medium-sized, yellow-green berries that take on a golden hue when fully ripe. The thin but tough skin makes the grapes resistant to pests and diseases. Vermentino is a late-ripening variety, harvested in late summer to early autumn. It prefers warm, sunny climates and thrives in well-drained soils, especially the granite and sandy soils of Sardinia. These soils impart a unique minerality to the wines. Vermentino wines from Sardinia are versatile and refreshing, reflecting the maritime influences and diverse terroir of the island. They offer a wide range of aromas and are a popular accompaniment to many Mediterranean dishes.
