Description

Vernatsch Vinschgau DOC 2022 / Cantina Merano / South-Tirol

Red wine from Italy

In 2010, the two traditional winery cooperatives of the Burggrafenamt, the Cantina Burggräfler and the Cantina Merano winery merged. This resulted in the Cantina Merano Burggräfler, which now has 380 members and cultivates 260 hectares of vineyards. As a result, the western cultivation area of South Tyrol from Lana in the south via Merano to Riffian in the north and Lagundo to Kastelbell in the west has been united under one roof.

Until a few decades ago, this grape variety dominated viticulture in South Tyrol. Since then, cultivation has steadily decreased. Nevertheless, it can be stated that the Vernatsch is identity-forming for South Tyrolean viticulture due to its long history of cultivation. Often blended with other grape varieties in the past, varietal wines of great quality are now being pressed. Characteristic of a Vernatsch is the pronounced fruit and almond aroma and the shiny ruby red colour.

The "Vinschgau" wine line from the Cantina Merano, to which our Vernatsch belongs, offers mineral and idiosyncratic alpine mountain wines that tell of their origin: of biting frosty nights, of quiet snowfall and strong winds, of light breezes and long dry periods, of gentle morning sun and from intense sunlight to extreme heat. The cultivation zone of the vines is in Vinschgau - south-east of the famous Ötztal Alps - at altitudes of 450 to 600 m asl. and thrive on barren and sandy soils of weathered slate, granite, and gneiss. After the harvest and soft pressing of the grapes, alcoholic fermentation takes place in large steel vats at a controlled temperature. This is followed by malolactic fermentation and storage for five months in large oak barrels.

With its bright ruby red, the bouquet of the Vernatsch Vinschgau DOC from the Cantina Merano is reminiscent of violets and almonds. In the mouth, this red wine is dry with soft tannins. It is harmonious and brings with it a well-integrated fruit acidity. Its finale is restrained and gentle.

The Vernatsch Vinschgau DOC is best enjoyed lightly chilled to enhance its fruity aromas. The optimal serving temperature ranges between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius. Its lightness makes it an excellent companion to delicate dishes such as poultry, veal, or traditional South Tyrolean cuisine. A recommendation is to consider this beverage as an alternative to beer when indulging in a traditional alpine snack platter. Overall, this red wine from South Tyrol presents itself as a versatile option suitable for various occasions. Its applicability extends from casual gatherings to outdoor lunches or as an aperitif. The well-balanced characteristics of this wine add a pleasant touch to any occasion.

Grape variety

VERNATSCH

The grape variety "Vernatsch" is a red grape variety primarily cultivated in the South Tyrol region of Italy. In South Tyrol, the Vernatsch grape is also known by the name "Schiava." The origins of this grape variety date back to antiquity, with the belief that it was cultivated by the Romans who introduced winemaking techniques to the region. Medieval writings and documents provide evidence of Vernatsch cultivation in South Tyrol, particularly in monasteries where monks played a significant role in nurturing and developing the grape variety. During the Renaissance, viticulture in South Tyrol experienced a surge, and the Vernatsch grape was further refined. Winemakers experimented with various cultivation techniques, deepening their understanding of the grape's characteristic traits. In the 19th century, winemaking techniques underwent modernization in Europe, introducing new methods in South Tyrol as well. Despite these changes, the Vernatsch vine remained a significant local variety, especially valued for producing light, enjoyable wines. In the 20th century, Vernatsch wine in South Tyrol was at times regarded as a simple table wine. However, in recent decades, a reassessment of the grape variety has taken place. Winemakers have recognized the potential of the grape and now produce high-quality Vernatsch wines that preserve their characteristic features while meeting modern quality standards. The Vernatsch grape continues to hold importance in South Tyrol and has secured a firm place in the regional wine landscape. Modern cultivation methods and oenological innovations have contributed to enhancing the quality of Vernatsch wines and emphasizing their versatility. The leaves of the Vernatsch plant are large, hand-shaped, and often deeply incised. They have a vibrant green colour, aiding in sufficient photosynthesis for grape maturation. The grapes of the Vernatsch plant are medium to large, with a loose structure, and the berries sit on thin stems. The berries themselves are thin-skinned and vary in colour from light to dark red, depending on ripeness. Grape maturation occurs relatively early in the season, allowing winemakers to harvest in late summer or early autumn. With a combination of sunny slopes, well-draining soils, and cool nights, Vernatsch finds an ideal habitat in South Tyrol. Wines made from the Vernatsch grape typically exhibit lightness, fruitiness, and a bright ruby colour. The taste is mild and fresh, with flavours of cherries, berries, and occasionally a hint of almonds. The alcohol content is moderate, and the acidity provides a pleasant freshness.
