Weißburgunder Festival Südtirol DOC 2024 / Cantina Merano / South-Tirol

Container of 6 bottles

White wine from Italy

In 2010, two long-established cooperatives from the Burggrafenamt region – the Burggräfler Winery and the Meran Wine Cellar – joined forces to form a strong alliance. The result was the creation of Kellerei Meran Burggräfler, now comprising 380 members and cultivating approximately 260 hectares of vineyards. This united cellar covers the entire western wine-growing area of South Tyrol, stretching from Lana in the south through Meran to Riffian in the north, and from Algund to Kastelbell in the west.

A key role is played by Pinot Blanc, which has been grown in South Tyrol for over 150 years and has, in recent decades, become the region’s leading white grape variety. On the sparse, mineral-rich soils and sun-drenched slopes of the Meran region and the Vinschgau valley, it reveals its full potential and proves itself a true all-rounder.

Within the “Festival” wine line, Kellerei Meran Burggräfler showcases expressive, varietally pure wines that reflect the diversity of South Tyrol. The Pinot Blanc Festival Alto Adige DOC is sourced from selected vineyards in Marling, Meran, Dorf Tirol and Labers, situated at altitudes between 450 and 550 metres. The soils, composed mainly of permeable moraine debris with sandy-loamy inclusions, offer ideal conditions for producing fresh, elegant white wines.

Following harvest, the grapes are gently pressed, and the must is fermented at controlled temperatures in small stainless steel tanks. Partial malolactic fermentation and a five-month maturation on fine lees lend the wine additional depth, structure and a delicate creaminess.

In the glass, this Pinot Blanc shines in a brilliant greenish-yellow hue. The bouquet opens with fresh notes of green apple, lemon and lime, complemented by subtle hints of quince and nutmeg. Delicate nuances of nut and caramel round off the aromatic profile with finesse. On the palate, it is dry, balanced and vibrant, supported by a clear fruit acidity. Flavours of lemon, grapefruit and apple intertwine with mineral undertones and a fine creaminess. The finish is playful, medium-long and marked by refreshing fruit.

Thanks to its versatility, the Pinot Blanc Festival Alto Adige DOC is a superb companion for a wide range of occasions. Served well chilled at 10–12 °C, it reveals its full brilliance – whether as an aperitif, alongside light starters, crisp salads or Mediterranean antipasti. It pairs beautifully with fish, seafood, white meats and poultry, and even traditional South Tyrolean dishes such as dumplings or Schlutzkrapfen. For a more creative pairing, it also complements fruit-based dishes or refined desserts, where its lively acidity and fruity notes add a touch of sophistication.

This offer includes a set of six 0.75-litre bottles – perfect for sharing, savouring over time, or gifting with style. The Pinot Blanc Festival Alto Adige DOC from Kellerei Meran Burggräfler unites tradition, terroir and modern cellar craftsmanship in a wine that embodies freshness, elegance and versatility at the highest level – a true showcase of South Tyrolean white wine excellence.

Grape variety

WEISSBURGUNDER (PINOT BLANC)

Pinot Blanc or Weissburgunder is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir and has its roots in Burgundy, France. The grape variety is believed to have emerged through natural mutations over time. From the Middle Ages onwards, the grape variety spread to various wine-growing regions in Europe. In Italy, Pinot Blanc is known as Pinot Bianco. The variety has become particularly important in the northern Italian regions of South Tyrol, Friuli, and Lombardy. South Tyrol in particular has proven to be ideal for growing Pinot Blanc due to its climatic conditions, where the Mediterranean climate meets Alpine influences. The leaves of the plant are medium-sized, rounded and deeply cut. The surface is shiny and medium green. The leaf stalks often have a reddish colour. The grapes had a slightly conical shape. The berries are medium-sized, round, and greenish yellow in colour. The grapes grow in loosely arranged clusters. The berries of the Pinot Blanc grape are thin-skinned and have a juicy, mild taste. The colour varies from a pale-yellow green to a slightly reddish tone, especially when the grapes are fully ripe. The Pinot Blanc vine tends to grow moderately, and its grapes ripen early. Yields can vary depending on vineyard location and farming methods, but in general yields are moderate. The diversity of vineyards in South Tyrol, ranging from lower altitudes to higher slopes, allows for different expressions of Pinot Blanc to be created depending on where the grapes are grown. Pinot Blanc wines from South Tyrol are often characterized by a fresh and fruity aroma profile. Typical aromas can include citrus fruits such as lemon and green apple, accompanied by subtle floral notes. The pronounced minerality is due to the different soil types in South Tyrol, which gives the wines additional complexity and depth. Pinot Blanc from South Tyrol are often characterized by a lively acidity that gives them freshness and elegance. The combination of ripe fruit and lively acidity makes these wines generally well balanced and refreshing.
