Description

„Zinzula“ Bianco Salento IGT 2023 / Masseria Altemura / Apulia

White wine from Italy

Between the two seas of Apulia lies Zìnzula, the jewel of Masseria Altemura. This wine celebrates the splendour of the coast and pays homage to the most stunning grotto in Salento, the Zìnzulusa. Zìnzula, a white wine crafted from Fiano and Moscato grapes, impresses with its refined aromas and the brilliance of its sleek, graceful body, illuminated by a touch of light. It embodies the essence of beauty, enchanting with its delicate details and the purity of the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.

Masseria Altemura is nestled in the heart of the picturesque Salento region, halfway between the Ionian and Adriatic seas. It boasts a unique terroir shaped by extraordinary light, fresh breezes from the two seas, and soil that combines white calcareous rock with Salento's distinctive red earth. The estate is part of the renowned Primitivo di Manduria DOC appellation and is located in the charming landscape of Torre Santa Susanna. It features a historic 17th-century farmhouse (the Masseria), a winery designed following green architectural principles, and the expansive, breathtaking vineyards that surround the property.

Fiano and Moscato are two historic grape varieties from southern Italy, celebrated for their distinctive wines. Fiano, one of Italy's oldest varieties, originates from Campania and thrives in warm climates. Its golden-yellow berries lend wines an intense aroma and remarkable versatility, whether enjoyed fresh or aged. Moscato, also known as Muscat, is native to the Mediterranean region, with grapes that produce a vibrant bouquet and lively acidity, giving its wines a floral and fruity character. Both varieties are now recognised as among Italy's finest white wines and are celebrated worldwide.

The vineyards dedicated to Zìnzula rest upon a fine layer of red earth atop a bed of limestone. Here, the Fiano and Moscato vines flourish with robust, lush canopies that effectively shield the grapes from over-ripening and sunburn, prevent oxidative processes, and avoid excessive alcohol and tannins. Precise water management during the crucial ripening phase is essential for producing fully developed, crisp grapes. This meticulous vineyard care forms the foundation for a white wine that dazzles with its balance of freshness, minerality, and intense aromas.

The grapes for Zìnzula Bianco Salento IGT are harvested at peak ripeness and carefully processed to preserve their precious aromas. Gentle pneumatic presses separate the must from the grapes, after which fermentation occurs over 7 to 10 days in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 18°C – ideal for enhancing the wine's fresh, fruity notes. Following fermentation, the young wine rests for 2 to 3 months on its fine lees, gaining additional depth and elegance. Finally, it undergoes bottle ageing, which harmonises its flavours and completes its distinctive character.

Zìnzula Bianco by Masseria Altemura shines in a radiant straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections, mirroring its freshness and vibrancy. Its bouquet is a refined interplay of aromas of yellow-fleshed fruits, white flowers, and citrus, complemented by a captivating hint of passion fruit. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious balance of intensity, freshness, and minerality, carried by a well-proportioned body. The flavours of fruits and flowers detected on the nose return, creating a perfect gustatory-olfactory harmony.

Zìnzula Bianco Salento IGT reveals its full potential when served at a temperature of 8 to 10°C, which brings out its fresh and elegant aromas. This versatile wine pairs wonderfully with a variety of dishes: its delicate structure enhances light appetisers, while its nuanced characteristics complement flavourful Mediterranean fish dishes. It also shines alongside dairy products and creamy soft cheeses, offering an exquisite tasting experience. A wine that elevates every moment and delights the senses.

Grape varieties

FIANO

The Fiano grape variety has its origins in Campania, southern Italy, and is considered one of the country’s oldest. Its history potentially dates back to the time of the ancient Romans or the Greek colonisation. Some historians believe that Fiano is identical to the ancient variety Vitis Apiana, named for its sweet berries that attracted bees, and mentioned by writers such as Pliny the Elder. During the Middle Ages, Fiano wine was highly popular in Campania, particularly in the Avellino region. However, by the 20th century, the variety had almost disappeared. It wasn’t until the 1970s that dedicated winemakers rediscovered Fiano’s potential and revived its cultivation. In 2003, the Avellino region received DOCG status for Fiano di Avellino, officially recognising the quality and importance of this grape. Fiano is characterised by its resilience and vigorous growth. Its densely foliaged vines are well-suited to the warm climate of southern Italy. The medium-sized, compact clusters of grapes are somewhat susceptible to rot in humid conditions, though their thick skins offer good resistance against pests. As the green-yellow berries ripen, they take on a golden hue, imbuing the wine with intense aromas. Fiano grapes are late ripening, typically harvested between late September and early October, making them ideal for warm regions. The wines can be enjoyed both young and fresh or aged. Aged Fiano wines are renowned for their complex notes of honey and smoke. The maturation process can take place in stainless steel tanks or wooden barrels, with barrel ageing adding further depth to the wine. Today, Fiano stands as one of Italy’s most esteemed white grape varieties and is celebrated by wine enthusiasts worldwide.

MOSCATO

The Moscato grape variety, also known as Muscat, is renowned in Italy for its intensely aromatic wines. Originating from the Mediterranean region, it thrives in the warm climates of Sicily, where it truly comes into its own. The combination of hot days and cooler nights lends Moscato Giallo a harmonious balance of natural aromas and vibrant acidity. The first vines are believed to have been brought to Sicily by the Greeks or Phoenicians. Later, the Arabs introduced advanced cultivation techniques and irrigation methods, giving a significant boost to Sicilian viticulture. During the Renaissance and Baroque eras, Moscato was highly prized at European royal courts, and under Spanish rule, it gained widespread fame, using the trade routes of the Spanish Crown to expand its reputation across the Mediterranean. In the 20th century, winemakers rediscovered Moscatos potential and began focusing on enhancing the quality of this variety. The grape thrives in Sicily’s mineral-rich volcanic soils, where its dense, golden-yellow clusters develop intense aromas at optimal ripeness. Thanks to their thick skins, the grapes are resilient to external factors and diseases, although they require meticulous care to avoid damage from excessive moisture. Today, Moscato stands as one of southern Italy’s most distinctive grape varieties, producing aromatic wines and sweet wines celebrated for their captivating fruitiness and floral elegance.
