Description

Barolo DOCG 2017 / Vinchio Vaglio / Piedmont

Red wine from Italy

The grapes for this legendary Piedmontese wine are made from the Nebbiolo vine, which ripens late towards the end of October. The bunches of grapes tend to be deep blue and are covered with a gray tinge before ripening. Their shape is elongated, pyramidal, made up of small berries that have a spherical and consistent skin. The vine is vigorous and shows rapid growth. You need a lot of experience to care for them.

As the centre to produce the world's most exclusive and aging red wines from the Nebbiolo grape, the Barolo wine region comprises five core communities: La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Serralunga d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto and the Barolo village itself, as well as a few isolated villages. The Barolo landscape, which is characterized by striking hills with castle peaks, is full of history and romance related to the Nebbiolo grape. There are two predominant soil types here that distinguish Barolo from the smaller surrounding areas. Compact and fertile white-yellow marl soils at higher altitudes define the westernmost vineyards. Typically, the Barolo wines that come from this area, i.e., from La Morra and Barolo itself, can be accessed relatively early in their development and represent the “feminine” side of Barolo, which is stylistically closer to Barbaresco with an elegant bouquet and fresh fruit. On the east side of the Barolo wine region, Swiss soils made of compressed sandstone and chalk are less fertile and produce wines with an intense body, strength, and structured tannins. This more "masculine" style comes from Monforte d’Alba and Serralunga d’Alba. The municipality of Castiglione Falletto has soils of both types mentioned above. The best Barolo wines take 10 to 15 years to be ready to drink and to continue to mature for several decades.

The Vinchio Vaglio wine cooperative, located in the picturesque village of Vinchio between the famous cities of Asti and Alba, has gained a lot of experience in processing regional wines. The Nebbiolo grapes are bought by local winemakers and transformed into the wonderful Barolo DOCG in the cooperative's wine cellar.

The fruits are harvested late at the end of October and are separated from the trunks in the wine cellar and gently pressed. The marc remains in contact with the must. The maceration then takes place at a controlled temperature. Then the Barolo from Vinchio Vaglio is allowed to mature in chestnut barrels for at least two years to develop its diverse aromas. After it has been bottled, it must rest in the bottle for a year as required by law. Only now does Barolo's journey begin: the older he gets, the better he gets.

When he is young, this Barolo shines with a ruby red colour. It gets darker and darker over time. Its complex nose contains intense floral notes with a slight spice and a subtle hint of liquorice. On the palate, the Barolo reveals its typical aromas of dried flowers and spices that it received during its maturation. Dry and warm, with perfectly integrated tannins. After all, its long finish is very soft. After the characterization of Barolo wines in general described above, the Barolo by Vinchio Vaglio can be classified on the “feminine” side.

At the recommended serving temperature of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, this complex and robust "Wine of Kings" reveals its true splendour. It gracefully complements pasta dishes adorned with rich meat sauces such as Bolognese or wild ragout, creating a harmonious marriage of flavours. The structured tannins of the wine elegantly counterbalance the richness of the sauces, delivering a well-rounded tasting experience. The earthy nuances of Barolo delicately enhance the subtle flavours of truffle-infused dishes, whether it's truffle pasta or risotto with truffles. The complexity of this noble drop seamlessly melds with the delicate aromas of the truffles, forming a truly delightful symbiosis. Thanks to its sturdy tannic structure and multifaceted flavour profile, Barolo is an excellent companion to game dishes like venison, wild boar, or duck. The intense flavours of the game find a worthy counterpart in this wine, accentuating their authenticity. A classic Osso Buco, crafted from braised veal, also finds its perfect match in a glass of Barolo. The tender meat aromas and the sumptuous sauce of this dish blend superbly with the structured tannins and earthy notes of the wine. Furthermore, Barolo happily accompanies a selection of aged cheeses such as Parmesan, Pecorino, or Gorgonzola. The wine's tannins skilfully balance the richness and spiciness of the cheeses, creating a true feast for the senses. Ultimately, Barolo from Vinchio Vaglio can be regarded as a wine for contemplation. In moments of tranquillity and reflection, it unfurls its full splendour. Through its complexity, structured tannins, longevity, elegance, and finesse, it offers inspiring and enriching tasting experiences that linger long in memory.

Grape variety

NEBBIOLO

The Nebbiolo grape is a noble red variety primarily cultivated in Piedmont, a region in the northwest of Italy. It is particularly renowned for its use in some of Italy's most famous red wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco. The name is derived from "nebbia" which means fog and points to the white coating on the berries, which forms when fully ripe. The origins of the Nebbiolo vine in Piedmont stretch back at least to the Middle Ages. It is believed that monks cultivated this grape variety in the region, especially in the hills surrounding the towns of Alba and Asti. During the Renaissance and the early modern period, viticulture gained significance in Piedmont, and the Nebbiolo vine established itself as one of the region's most important varieties. The first records of Nebbiolo wines date back to this period. In the 18th century, Piedmontese winemakers began to focus increasingly on cultivating Nebbiolo, particularly in the Langhe and Roero hills, as well as the Barolo and Barbaresco areas. These regions subsequently became some of the most renowned growing areas for Nebbiolo wines. The 19th century witnessed a golden age of winemaking in Piedmont. The Nebbiolo vine was further refined, and some of the region's most famous wines, such as Barolo and Barbaresco, began to emerge. During this time, specific viticultural practices and winemaking techniques were also perfected, many of which are still utilized today. Today, viticulture in Piedmont is experiencing a renaissance. The cultivation of Nebbiolo has evolved, with winemakers increasingly adopting sustainable practices and introducing cutting-edge technologies to enhance the quality of their wines. The leaves of the Nebbiolo plant are medium-sized, rounded, and have a dark green colour. They are often five-lobed and slightly undulating. The grapes are typically medium-sized, cylindrical, or slightly conical in shape, with a loose grape structure that promotes good ventilation and reduces the risk of fungal diseases. The berries of Nebbiolo grapes are comparatively small, with thin, delicate skin. They are of a bluish-black colour and ripen late in the season, characteristic of the variety. Nebbiolo thrives best in hilly or mountainous regions with calcareous soils, making Piedmont its ideal habitat. The finest Nebbiolo wines often originate from areas with specific microclimates that encourage slow ripening and optimal flavour development. Nebbiolo berries contain a high concentration of tannins and a balanced acidity, imparting structure, complexity, and longevity to wines made from this variety.
