Description

160 Anni Rosso Calabria IGT 2019 / Ippolito 1845 / Calabria

Red wine from Italy

The Ippolito 1845 winery is a renowned winery from the southern Italian region of Calabria. It was founded in 1845 by the Ippolito family and has a long tradition in wine production. The winery is located in the small town of Ciro Marina on the Ionian Sea, well-known for its wine production. Ippolito 1845 specializes in the production of wines from autochthonous grape varieties of the region, in particular the Ciro wine. The winemakers use traditional cultivation methods and strive for the highest quality. The vineyards cover an area of around 50 hectares and benefit from the region's favourable Mediterranean climate and mineral-rich soils. Ippolito 1845 has received numerous awards and recognitions for its wines over the years. The winery strives to preserve the heritage and tradition of the Calabria region while using innovative techniques to produce high quality wines.

Gaglioppo is an autochthonous red grape variety native to the Calabria region. It is one of the best known and most widespread grape varieties in the region. The Gaglioppo grapes have a thick skin and are therefore well adapted to the Mediterranean climate. They prefer sunny and dry conditions, but also thrive at high altitudes. The vines are robust and disease resistant. Gaglioppo wines are characterized by their powerful and intense ruby red colour. They offer complex aromas of red fruits like cherries and berries accompanied by spicy notes like black pepper and Mediterranean herbs. Some wines also show subtle hints of tobacco and leather.

The "160 Anni" Rosso Calabria IGT celebrates the history of the Ippolito 1845 winery, its commitment and passion. The importance of Gaglioppo and the winemakers' desire for continuous innovation have resulted in a unique and incredibly intriguing wine. Only the best grapes are used for this unique wine. The vines thrive on slopes at approx. 250m asl. in the locality of Cirò Marina. Here the soils are sandy and loamy and therefore ideal for viticulture. After the grapes have been harvested and before the red wine is made, the fruits are dried on racks until the end of November before maceration with wine from fresh grapes begins (Appassimento technique). This wonderful wine then matures in oak barrels for 16 months.

With its strong and bright ruby red, the "160 Anni" Rosso Calabria IGT exudes an extremely complex bouquet with elegant notes of ripe blackberries, cherries, violets, juniper, cloves, cocoa and black pepper. Sensitive noses also perceive a subtle smell of meth. On the palate, this southern Italian red wine is dry, round and has a nice structure. The noticeable tannins lie velvety on the palate and fill the mouth with a spicy sensation. A never-ending finish awaits the finale.

After this Rosso Calabria von Ippolito 1845 has been decanted at least half an hour before consumption, it goes well with game dishes, stews, red meats and mature cheeses at an optimal drinking temperature of around 18 to 20°C.

Grape variety

GAGLIOPPO

The Gaglioppo is a black grape variety that is believed to be of Greek origin and is particularly widespread in the Calabrian provinces of Cosenza, Catanzaro, and Crotone. It has a medium-sized, pentagonal, and sometimes heart or wedge-shaped leaf. The bunches of grapes are medium-sized and pyramidal or conical in shape. The red-black grape is compact and rather medium-sized. With the Gaglioppo, a good and constant production is possible, whereby it prefers a short cut. Purely vinified, it produces wines with a more or less intense ruby red color that are quite tannic and tart. However, through the maturation process, wines of great finesse and elegance are obtained.
