Description

Barolo Riserva DOCG 2016 / Batasiolo / Piedmont

Red wine from Italy

Probably the most famous wine in Italy is also known as the "wine of kings". But you don't have to be a monarchist to love Barolo. Even dictators and republicans will find their favour in this drop.

Beni di Batasiolo is the story of the Dogliani family. The family has been living the world of wine in the Italian Langhe region for five generations, whose vineyards have immensely contributed to making Italian wines famous all over the world. The estates of the Beni di Batasiolo winery are all located in the famous Barolo growing area, which is about 15 km south-west of the equally famous truffle town of Alba. Batasiolo has secured some of the best locations here and is now one of the most renowned winegrowers in the region.

Barolo is made from the Nebbiolo grape variety, one of the oldest and most prestigious grape varieties in Italy. The Nebbiolo grape is known for its high quality and its ability to produce complex and elegant wines. The grapes of the Nebbiolo vine are comparatively small and have a thick skin. They are late maturing and therefore require a long growing season to reach their full potential. The vine prefers calcareous soils and a cool climate with large temperature fluctuations between day and night. The Barolo region in Piedmont is known for its unique terroir, which consists of calcareous soils, a cool climate with large temperature differences between day and night and a specific hillside. These factors influence the character of Barolo wine and give it its unique complexity and finesse.

The manual harvest of the Nebbiolo grapes takes place in the first half of October. Only a selection of high-quality grapes from the municipality of Barolo is used for this Riserva. After destemming and gentle pressing, the must ferments with maceration of the skins in steel tanks for ten to twelve days. Constant pumping at a controlled temperature accompanies this process. The Barolo Riserva DOCG is refined and aged for at least 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels and continues in steel tanks. This refinement comes to an end the moment you open the bottle.

The Barolo Riserva DOCG from Beni di Batasiolo presents itself to the eye with a deep garnet red streaked with delicate orange tones. This unique red wine is characterized by a special aromatic range with a tendency towards maturity. After decanting, you can see a very dense and concentrated bouquet that flows around the nose in a subtle, ethereal, and spicy way with floral undertones. On the palate, the Barolo is dry, velvety, nutty and a little floral. Overall, a convincing taste with rich undertones, supported by a good alcohol content and a harmonious combination of tannins and freshness that give a pleasant feeling of completeness and body.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 18 to 20°C, the Barolo Riserva from Batasiolo is ideal in combination with dishes made from red meat, game, roasts, and hearty and spicy cheeses. It is particularly appreciated by lovers of round and velvety wines. And probably the Barolo is an ideal-typical meditation wine.

Grape variety

NEBBIOLO

The red grape variety Nebbiolo comes from the Italian region Piedmont and delivers tannin-rich, expressive wines that have to mature for a long time. The name is derived from "nebbia," meaning fog, and refers to the white coating on the berries that forms when they are fully ripe. This grape variety has probably been cultivated in the Monferrato and Langhe hills since ancient times and is mentioned in writings as early as the 13th century. The grapes of the Nebbiolo vine are relatively small and have a thick skin. They are late maturing and therefore require a long growing season to reach their full potential. The vine prefers calcareous soils and a cool climate with large temperature fluctuations between day and night. The Nebbiolo is one of the most demanding grape varieties in terms of soil and location. It practically only thrives on calcareous marl soil and absolutely requires steep south and south-west locations.
