Description

"Calasole" Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC 2022 / Rocca di Montemassi / Tuscany

White wine from Italy

On the slopes of Montemassi, in the heart of the Maremma, great wines are born that tell of a Tuscany where emotions have the fire of the earth and the purity of the sea. From the Vermentino to the great reds, Rocca di Montemassi represents a new milestone for Tuscan wine, proving the excellence of a territory still intact and wild, full of stories, legends, and authentic flavours. Right here, in southern Tuscany, not far from the city of Grosseto, between the Colline Metallifere (“metalliferous hills”) and the Tyrrhenian Sea, a 100% Tuscan and 100% sustainable winery is born that brings together the different souls of the Maremma.

The origins of the Vermentino grape variety are unclear. For some, it hails from Aragon in north-eastern Spain, although the varietal is no longer found in the present day. According to others, it comes from Portugal or from the island of Madeira. In the Middle Ages, it then came to Italy via France, where it found a perfect habitat, especially in Sardinia and southern Tuscany. Vermentino-based wines are generally dry but delicately soft white wines of a straw yellow colour with intense aromas of wildflowers and herbs and hints of yellow peach.

The grapes for the Calasole Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC from Rocca di Montemassi are harvested by hand at the beginning of September - the month of Vermentino - in order to prevent unwanted oxidation, they are quickly transported to the wine cellar, carefully destemmed and subjected to a gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 18 to 22ºC. The wine then rests on the fine lees for six months before being bottled.

The name "Calasole" is intended to evoke the almost eponymous sea breeze ("calar del sole") that rises at "sunset" on the Maremma coast. The Calasole Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC presents itself in the glass with a brilliant straw yellow colour. On the nose, this wonderful white wine produces intense notes of white flowers with fresh hints of ripe fruit, citrus fruits, and aromatic herbs. In the mouth it is nicely dry, consistent, and very fresh. Citrus notes dominate, which have a mineral underlay and are escorted by a subtle almond. The incredible freshness accompanies the whole finale.

At a recommended serving temperature of approximately 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, the Vermentino unveils its freshness and vibrancy, making it an excellent companion to lighter summer dishes. Italian appetizers such as Bruschetta, olives, mozzarella with tomatoes, or air-dried ham pair perfectly with this wine. The lively aromas of Vermentino complement fresh salads exceptionally well, especially those with seafood or citrus fruits. Thanks to its fresh acidity and lively flavours, Vermentino is an ideal complement to various seafood, including mussels, oysters, shrimp, and fish. It also pairs excellently with lightly seasoned poultry, whether it's roasted chicken, grilled chicken breast, or turkey. Vegetarian dishes such as grilled vegetables, pasta with tomato sauce, or risotto also find a harmonious connection with Vermentino. The Mediterranean cuisine, characterized by fresh herbs, olive oil, and high-quality ingredients, blends seamlessly with this wine. With "Calasole" Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC, you can enjoy a broad range of dishes, particularly those that are fresh and not too heavy.

Grape variety

VERMENTINO

Vermentino is a white grape variety widely cultivated, predominantly in Italy and France. Flourishing in the Mediterranean climate of the Tuscan Maremma, characterized by warm summers and mild winters, Vermentino grapes find optimal conditions for growth. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea modulates temperatures and wind directions, thus fostering the development of intricate aromas. With a rich history in Italy, particularly along the coasts, the cultivation of Vermentino likely began many centuries ago in the Maremma. However, in recent decades, the wine industry in this region has undergone an impressive modernization and enhancement of quality. Winemakers have embraced innovative viticultural methods and modern cellar techniques to unlock the full potential of the Vermentino grape. The growing recognition of Vermentino wines from the Maremma on both national and international levels reflects the increasing popularity of this grape variety. Wine experts and enthusiasts particularly appreciate the fresh acidity, diverse flavours, and mineral notes found in the Vermentino wines of this region. The leaves of the Vermentino vine are medium to large and exhibit a slightly oval shape, with a colour range from light green to medium green. The grapes of Vermentino are characterized by their medium size and cylindrical shape. Hanging loosely, they contribute to optimal ventilation, a crucial factor, especially in warm climates. Vermentino berries are of medium size, displaying a slightly oval shape. With a yellowish-green colour and thin skin, they lend a distinctive appearance to the grapes. Vermentino grapes reach moderate ripeness in the late summer to early autumn months. Vermentino wines from the Maremma impress with their well-defined structure and pleasant freshness. The balanced texture, accompanied by harmonious acidity, makes them ideal companions for Mediterranean dishes.
