Description

Cannonau di Sardegna DOC BIO 2021 / Antonella Corda / Sardinia

Red wine from Italy

The young winemaker Antonella Corda from the village of Serdiana north of Cagliari in the south of the beautiful Mediterranean island of Sardinia is the new discovery of the Italian wine scene, who received the coveted 3 glasses twice in a row from Gambero Rosso with her red Cannonau di Sardegna DOC. The history of Cantina Antonella Corda cannot be separated from that of its founder. A childhood in the middle of the vineyards, a family of winemakers for generations, a mother who passes on her love for the land and a father who teaches her a passion for work. Antonella inherited the family tradition in 2010 and took over the management of the company, turning it into a great project that was innovative compared to its past: to create a boutique winery capable of producing fine Sardinian wines to represent the Serdiana land in the world.

The Cannonau grape variety is actually identical to the Spanish Grenache grape variety. It is believed that it was brought to Sardinia by the Spaniards. The wine made from the Cannonau grape is poor in tannins and colour. It can therefore deliver good fruity wines. Under extreme climatic conditions (drought, heat, wind) and with very low yields, the Cannonau also delivers concentrated, extremely storable red wines. Perfect for Sardinia.

This Cannonau comes from the Mitza S’ollastu vineyard on the Rio Mannu. The permeable, well-ventilated soil is a mixture of sand, clay, limestone, and gravel and, together with the mild Mediterranean climate and the consistently light wind, ensures perfectly ripened, healthy grapes and the necessary balance of fruit and tannin to give the wine its varietal character. After the manual harvest at the end of September, cold maceration begins with subsequent fermentation at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. This red wine, which is as natural as possible, is matured in 90% stainless steel and 10% in barriques that are partly un-toasted and partly medium-toasted.

The garnet red Cannonau di Sardegna DOC by Antonella Corda has a delicately spicy, intense fruit bouquet with notes of cherry, raspberry, blackberry and rose. The pleasant, aromatic and slightly spicy fruity body is noticeable in the taste. Its soft tannins are pleasant, and the long finish is extremely elegant. Oh yes, of course this wine is dry.

At an optimal drinking temperature of around 14 to 16 ° C, the Cannonau di Sardegna is a very good accompaniment to rich meat-based dishes and game dishes. All in all, a demanding red wine, which has also prompted the wine critics from Gambero Rosso to award the coveted 3 glasses to the 2019 vintage.

Grape variety

CANNONAU

The Cannonau is a red grape variety mainly grown on the Italian island of Sardinia. The grapes are small and thick-walled, producing a deep dark wine with a high alcohol content and soft tannins. The aromas are characterized by dark berries such as blackberries and black currants and spices such as black pepper and cloves. Cannonau wines are often aged in oak barrels, giving them added complexity and notes of vanilla and tobacco. In Sardinia, Cannonau is often referred to as "manna joy" and is considered a symbol of longevity and health, as the island has one of the highest concentrations of centenarians.
