Description

Casalforte Pinot Grigio Venezie DOC 2022 / Cantine Riondo / Veneto

White wine from Italy

Cantine Riondo is based in the heart of the Soave area between the famous cities of Verona and Venice. Although it was only founded in 2008 as a wine cooperative, it is currently one of the most important wine producers in Veneto. The corporate structure seems complicated, but in reality it is very simple: two thousand winemakers cultivate 6000 hectares of vineyards in the provinces of Verona, Vicenza and Padua, giving the harvested grapes to five wineries for subsequent vinification.

Casalforte is Cantine Riondo's premium line and represents the most refined interpretation of the winemaking tradition of the territory to which it belongs. The line includes elegant and full-bodied Venetian DOC and varietal wines, perfectly paired with the most complex and demanding dishes of Italian and international cuisine. The name Casalforte pays homage to the typical "farmhouses" that can be found in many farms in this area. Here you will meet winegrowers who have been farming their land knowledgeably for countless generations with the "fortress" of soul and passion.

The Pinot Grigio is a white grape variety that is mainly grown in northern Italy and Alsace. The grapes are small, round and yellowish grey, resulting in a white wine with a light straw yellow colour and greenish reflections. Pinot Grigio wines are typically light to medium-bodied, with moderate acidity and a fresh, fruity flavour. Aromas of citrus fruits, pears and green apples are typical of this grape variety. Pinot Grigio is a versatile wine that goes well with light dishes such as salads, fish and seafood and is also suitable as an aperitif. Pinot Grigio grown in Veneto finds a habitat of lighter soils and more generous acreage, making the wine rather light and fruity with little alcohol. Nevertheless, the Cantine Riondo manages to conjure up a full and fruity varietal wine with the Casalforte Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC.

The vines that produce the fruit for the white wine Casalforte Pinot Grigio Venezie DOC grow in the northern Italian Veneto on soils made of clay and limestone. After the harvest, the grapes are immediately transported to the winery. Here they are sorted, de-stemmed and gently pressed. This is followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 18°C and subsequent temperature-controlled aging on the fine lees for three months.

With its straw yellow colour, this Pinot Grigio exudes an aroma of citrus fruits reminiscent of grapefruit. There are also subtle balsamic and sage notes in the background. Dry, intense, and pleasantly fresh on the palate. Overall, this white wine is gentle and says goodbye with a fruity and lasting finish.

At an optimum drinking temperature of around 8 to 10°C, the Casalforte Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC from Cantine Riondo, which has been highly praised by various wine critics, is an excellent aperitif wine. Its fresh acidity, light to medium-bodied flavours and dry structure make it a pleasant choice in combination with light snacks, fresh fruit, bread with olive oil and light canapés to prepare the palate for the meal to come. To start the meal, this Pinot goes perfectly with a selection of Italian antipasti such as air-dried ham, salami, cheese, and pickled vegetables. Due to its freshness and minerality, it also harmonises well with seafood, such as grilled fish, mussels, squid or other seafood dishes. Almost perfect with lighter pasta dishes such as spaghetti with tomato sauce, seafood pasta or pasta with a light cream sauce. Poultry dishes, especially roast or grilled chicken, also harmonise well with this Pinot Grigio. Try this white wine with vegetarian dishes such as grilled vegetables, risotto with mushrooms or other light vegetable dishes. Finally, this wine is an excellent accompaniment to light summer dishes such as salads, bruschetta, or grilled vegetables.

Grape variety

PINOT GRIGIO

The historical development of the Pinot Grigio grape variety in Italy is closely linked to the history of the Pinot grape, which has its origins in Burgundy, France. It is a mutation of the Pinot Noir grape and spread under various names, including Pinot Gris in France. It gets its name from its grey-purple berries, with “grigio” meaning “grey” in Italian. However, in warm climates the berries can take on a slightly reddish colour. The Pinot Grigio grape came to Italy in the 19th century. Particularly in the northern Italian regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto, the grape variety found particularly favourable conditions and began to gain popularity. The Veneto region in northeastern Italy, especially the area around the city of Treviso, has now established itself as one of the most important growing areas for Pinot Grigio. The grape variety thrives particularly well here, and winemakers have perfected their viticulture techniques to produce high quality wines. The leaves of the Pinot Grigio vine are medium in size and slightly oval in shape. The leaf colour is medium green, and the leaves may have a slightly toothed or lobed structure. Pinot Grigio grapes are typically medium-sized and conical or cylindrical in shape. This grape variety is known for its late ripening. The buds break out late, making the vine less susceptible to spring frosts. However, the late ripening also allows the grapes to develop good acidity and complex aromas. Due to the thin skin of the berries, growing Pinot Grigio requires special attention to protect the grapes from diseases and pests. Vintners accordingly use a variety of viticulture techniques, including specific canopy management practices, to ensure the optimal balance between sun exposure and air circulation. Veneto winemakers use their know-how to enhance the natural characteristics of Pinot Grigio grapes and produce wines with a balanced profile. Pinot Grigio from Veneto is often consumed young and fresh and pairs well with light dishes such as seafood, salads, and white meat.
