Description

Fiano di Avellino D.O.C.G. 2022 / Villa Raiano / Campania

White wine from Italy

Villa Raiano is located in the village of San Michele di Serino in the hinterland of Naples in the Campania region of southern Italy. Irpinia is a fertile land, with a network of mountains and hills criss-crossed by rivers and streams. The geographical and climatic conditions make this piece of the southern Apennines a unique and inimitable place for wine growing. The small Villa Raiano winery grows only selected autochthonous grape varieties on about 27 hectares of its own vineyards. Not yet so well known in the rest of Europe, these wonderful wines still offer potential for new discoveries.

Fiano is an autochthonous white wine grape variety native to Campania in southern Italy. The area under cultivation of Fiano is relatively limited and the variety is restricted to Campania and the bordering region of Basilicata. This remarkable and fascinating variety, which produces unique wines, has been cultivated for centuries. The grapes of the Fiano vine are small to medium-sized and have a yellow-green colour. Fiano wines are characterised by their complex aromatics, which include notes of yellow stone fruit, citrus, honey, anise, and flowers. The wines can be fresh and fruity when young and develop a pronounced minerality and full body with ageing. In Campania, the variety is grown in the DOCG areas of Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, where it is often used in single-varietal wines. Fiano is also well suited for blending with other autochthonous Italian varieties such as Greco and Falanghina.

The grapes for Villa Raiano's Fiano di Avellino DOCG come from the four villages of Candida, Montefredane, Lapio and San Michele di Serino in the province of Avelino. The vines, planted in the Guyot system, stand here at an average altitude of 450 to 500 metres above sea level on calcareous, sandy and clayey soils. The grapes are harvested manually in the first week of October and, to avoid crushing them, are quickly transported to the winery in small crates. The bunches of grapes are then subjected to a gentle pressing without destemming in order to preserve the flower must. The must is then inoculated with selected yeasts and fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of about 16°C. After a period of maturation in steel tanks, the Fiano di Avellino is bottled in the second week of February after the harvest.

In the glass, straw yellow with greenish reflections, the nose is immediately reached by a fragrance that is austere and gentle at the same time. Aromas of mint, sage and white peach appear, which are subtly accompanied by sensations of white chocolate and citrus fruits. With time, a distinct mineral component emerges. The palate is fine, not too voluminous, but full and satisfying. A nice acidity enhances the freshness of the Fiano di Avellino from Campania. The finish is very tasty with a return of dense floral and menthol notes.

At a recommended drinking temperature of around 10 to 12°C, Villa Raiano's Fiano di Avellino is ideal with fresh Italian hors d'oeuvres, light pasta dishes and fried blue fish. Very nice also with dishes based on omelette.

Grape variety

FIANO

Fiano is a very old autochthonous white grape variety of southern Italy. It is mainly distributed in the Italian region of Campania. Fiano was already cultivated by the Romans, who called them Vitis apiana because of their great attraction to bees (Latin apis, Italian ape). It produces aromatic, spicy white wines with a spicy honey and nut bouquet, which are long storable.
