Description

"Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG 2022 / Vinchio Vaglio / Piedmont

White wine from Italy

The Arneis is an autochthonous vine of ancient origin that is mainly grown in the Roero in the northeast of the province of Cuneo in Piedmont. In the Piedmontese dialect "Arneis" means "the little difficult one", which gives an indication of the complicated handling of this grape variety. In the past it seems to have been common to have grown this grape variety alongside supposedly higher quality ones to distract birds and bees from them.

The "Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG from the wine cooperative Vinchio Vaglio, which is based in the picturesque village of Vinchio between the famous cities of Asti and Alba in Piedmont, is made with grapes that come from the Roero, and therefore not actually from the sphere of activity by Vinchio Vaglio. Hence its name "Frusté", which means "foreigner" in the dialect and is intended to refer to the territorial diversity of the Piedmont wine-growing region.

Arneis is a very old white wine variety that was already known in the 15th century under the names Renesium and Ornesio. In Italy it is grown exclusively in Piedmont, which is why it is also known as "Barolo bianco". It was almost extinct when it was rediscovered in the 1990s and has since experienced a renaissance.

The vines, laid out with the Guyot vine training system, for the "Frusté" Roero Arneis DOCG are mainly facing south-west on sandy soil at an average altitude of 250m above sea level. Manual harvesting usually takes place in the first ten days of September. Small boxes are used for this to preserve the integrity of the grapes until they arrive in the wine cellar. In order to preserve the typical aromas of the vine, it is imperative that the harvest take place early in the morning, when the temperatures are still moderate.

Vinification begins with the gentle pressing of the whole grapes, separating the clear must from the cloudy must, followed by static decanting for about 24 hours at 14°C. The subsequent alcoholic fermentation is very slow, in reduction, at a temperature of 17°C for 15 days. The expansion then lasts from October to March, whereby the white wine lies on the noble yeasts, which are stirred up again and again by the so-called batonnage to prevent their decomposition. During this process, the very complex aroma profile of the Arneis is transferred to the wine. Before Vinchio Vaglio's “Frusté” Roero Arneis DOCG is marketed, it rests in its bottle for at least three months to refine it.

With its straw yellow colour with light amber reflections, the "Frusté" is on the nose delicate, fresh and fruity with light notes of tropical fruits and herbaceous hints in the finish. On the palate, this white wine is dry and very balanced between freshness, roundness, and structure. The finale is subtly bitter.

At a recommended drinking temperature of around 10 to 12 ° C, this unique white wine from Piedmont goes well with cold cuts, salads, omelets with vegetables and wild herbs, stuffed onions, rabbit meat, white meat, and fish dishes.

Grape variety

ARNEIS

ARNEIS is an ancient white grape. In Italy it was well known already in the 15th century. In the present, the ARNEIS is grown in Italy only in the Piedmont region. Although it is called "Barolo bianco", but only to make aware of the common area of origin. With Barolo the ARNEIS has nothing else to do. In Piedmontese dialect Arneis means "the little difficult", which gives an indication of the complicated handling of that variety.
