Description

“Graf” Goldmuskateller Südtirol DOC 2022 / Cantina Merano / South-Tirol

White wine from Italy

In 2010, the two traditional winery cooperatives of the Burggrafenamt, the Burggräfler Kellerei and the Weinkellerei Meran, joined forces. This gave rise to the Cantina Merano Burggräfler, which now has 380 members and cultivates 260 ha of vineyards. This has united the western cultivation area of South Tyrol from Lana in the south via Merano to Riffian in the north and Algund to Kastelbell in the west under one roof. Quality in the vineyard, quality in the work and quality in the wine glass have top priority. The origin and provenance of the grapes must always be recognisable in the wine glass. The wine should remain true to its "roots", because it is all about transparency, character and authenticity. This is how every bottle becomes a special experience.

The grape variety Goldmuskateller is an aromatic white wine variety that is mainly grown in South Tyrol, but also in other wine regions such as Trentino, Styria and Croatia. Goldmuskateller grapes are small and densely packed, with a yellow-green color and high sugar content. The wines are mostly dry, but still have a pronounced sweetness and a fruity aroma. They are typically light yellow to golden yellow in color and light to medium bodied. The variety is undemanding and easy to cultivate. It prefers cool climates and grows best in loamy and chalky soils. The yields are usually rather low, but the wines are all the more valuable and sought after.

The Goldmuskateller Südtirol DOC from the Cantina Merano comes from the "Graf" line, which includes elegant wines full of character from selected vineyards. A consistent reduction in yield is used here in order to do justice to the noble name and the high-quality standards. The vines are in the villages of Algund, Lana, Marlengo and Tscherms at an average altitude of 500m asl. on porous weathered soils, which have a high proportion of gravel on the slopes and in the sandy bottom of the valley are humus-rich and slightly loamy. The manual grape harvest takes place in late autumn. After a cold maceration of twelve hours, alcoholic fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in small stainless-steel tanks. The wine is later stored on the fine lees for five months, with no biological acid degradation taking place here.

The result is a bright, straw-yellow white wine that delights the nose with fruity aromas of orange, lemon and, of course, nutmeg. On the palate, the "Graf" or “Count” Goldmuskateller DOC is dry and beautifully fresh. The spicy aromas pave the way to a fine, harmonious, and persistent finish.

To fully appreciate the indulgence of this wine, it is recommended to serve it slightly chilled – ideally at a temperature between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius. The Goldmuskateller unfolds its charms exceptionally well as an aperitif and pairs wonderfully with dishes of light to medium intensity. Enjoy it with fresh fruit salads, melon with ham, or goat cheese. It also complements asparagus, light fish dishes, poultry such as chicken or turkey, and Asian cuisine featuring lightly spiced dishes. This wine is an exquisite accompaniment. Furthermore, the Goldmuskateller harmonizes beautifully with fresh and mild cheeses like goat cheese or young Gouda, as well as with fruit-based desserts, sorbets, or fruit tarts. In summary, the fruity and floral notes of the Goldmuskateller blend superbly with dishes sharing similar flavour profiles or possessing a touch of sweetness. A true delight for the palate!.

Grape variety

GOLDMUSKATELLER

The Goldmuskateller, also known as Moscato Giallo, is a captivating grape variety predominantly thriving in the sun-kissed vineyards of South Tyrol. Flourishing on well-drained, mineral-rich soils of the Alpine slopes, this aromatic grape finds ideal conditions. The cool climate of this region not only preserves the freshness but also accentuates the aromatic characteristics of the grapes. While the exact origin of the Goldmuskateller remains in the shadows, it is speculated that this grape variety has its roots in the Mediterranean region. The name "Muskateller" is derived from the intense muscat aroma of the grapes. The addition of "Gold" in the name could allude to the golden-yellow colour of the grapes or perhaps signify the special appreciation for this variant. The leaves of the Goldmuskateller vine typically appear medium to large, rounded, and deeply incised. Dark green and slightly serrated at the edges, they contribute to the picturesque appearance of the vine. The characteristic golden-yellow clusters of Goldmuskateller grapes are medium to large, loosely packed, and have a conical shape. The round berries with their thin skin stand out with their golden-yellow colour, while the flesh is juicy and sweet. The robust Goldmuskateller vines tend to branch out well and can reach considerable heights. Careful cultivation is essential to keep the foliage healthy and ensure optimal sun exposure. A distinctive feature of the Goldmuskateller is the aromatic glands found on leaves and berries. These glands produce essential oils that impart the unmistakable muscat bouquet to the wine. Over the centuries, winemakers in South Tyrol have perfected sophisticated winemaking techniques to preserve the full aroma of the Goldmuskateller. Dry, semi-dry, and sweet wine styles are produced, with the grapes used for both table wines and noble sweet specialties. The modernization of wine production techniques in the 20th century has led to further improvements in the cultivation and vinification of Goldmuskateller, continually enhancing the quality and diversity of the wines.
