"Granèe" Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG 2022 / Batasiolo / Piedmont

Container of 6 bottles

White wine from Italy

The Dogliani family's Beni di Batasiolo winery is located in the town of La Morra, southwest of the famous truffle town of Alba in Piedmont and is one of the largest wineries in the Langhe. Here, in the Langhe, wines thrive that have made this region famous all over the world. In 1978, the Dogliani acquired the historic Kiola winery, thereby securing the best locations for the Nebbiolo da Barolo. The Dogliani brothers then decided to give these various small wineries a new name, taking inspiration from the Batasiolo vineyard, where the nucleus of the historic winery is located. Thus, was born Beni di Batasiolo, the new winery surrounded by the rolling hills of the homonymous vineyard. In the old local dialect, the word "beni" means property or estate. The name Beni di Batasiolo thus contains an ancestral way of life of this area, which has its essence in the inseparable bond between the farmer and his vineyard.

The vigorous and early ripening Cortese grapes for the "Granée" Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG thrive within the municipality of Gavi between Alessandria and Genoa, where they find optimal conditions for an elegant wine. The Italian adjective "cortese" means "polite" or "accommodating" and already indicates what kind of wines are made from this old wine variety. In the territory surrounding the town of Gavi, the Cortese grape clearly plays the leading role. The granular soils have a very high number of fossils that come from the primeval Padano Sea. This is also the reason for the minimal geological differences between the various plots, which can then be perceived both in the nose and on the palate.

The Cortese grapes from the Gavi area are hand-picked in the second half of September. Separated from the stalks, the fruits are then crushed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, with temperature strictly controlled. The final aging and refinement on the lees also take place in stainless steel tanks.

This original Piedmontese and varietal white wine with a clear and brilliant straw yellow streaked with greenish reflections has an elegant and varietal flowery bouquet with hints of fresh fruit and white flowers. Not too overpowering, but the scent is persistent. On the palate, the Batasiolo Granèe Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG is dry, expressive, and refreshing. The balanced and harmonious body of this Piedmontese white wine has a pleasantly long bitter aftertaste reminiscent of almonds.

The "Granèe" Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG from Beni di Batasiolo shines as an ideal aperitif when served chilled at a temperature of approximately 6 to 8°C. With its vibrant acidity and fruity aromas, it makes for a refreshing prelude to any meal. Thanks to its freshness and minerality, this wine is particularly recommended as a companion to seafood. Oysters, mussels, grilled fish, and other maritime delights find a harmonious complement in the Gavi di Gavi. The wine's versatility is evident with light starters such as Caprese salad, fresh spring salads, or goat cheese. Additionally, Gavi pairs exceptionally well with poultry dishes. Whether it's grilled chicken, roasted turkey, or a subtly spiced chicken soup, the wine's subtle flavours and balanced acidity add tasteful accents. For cheese enthusiasts, it pairs beautifully with soft varieties like Brie or Camembert. Furthermore, Gavi di Gavi proves to be an excellent choice for pasta dishes with light sauces or a classic risotto. Overall, this wine presents itself as extremely versatile, complementing a broad range of light and fresh dishes.

Grape variety

CORTESE

The white grape variety Cortese flourishes in the picturesque region of Piedmont in northwest Italy, gaining notable recognition through the production of the esteemed white wine, Gavi. While its precise origins remain shrouded in mystery, it is speculated that the Cortese grape has been cultivated in this region since the medieval period. The earliest written records of this grape date back to the 17th century. Over the centuries, the Cortese grape has firmly established itself in the winemaking tradition of Piedmont. Particularly in the Gavi region of southern Piedmont, it is valued for its adaptability to calcareous soils and the temperate climate characterized by warm summers and cool nights. In 1998, the Gavi region was bestowed with the coveted Gavi DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), signifying the highest quality standards for Italian wines. This underscores the outstanding significance of the Cortese grape in this region. In recent times, many vintners have introduced modern winemaking techniques to further elevate the quality of Cortese wines. This includes the use of stainless-steel tanks and meticulous temperature control during fermentation. The leaves of the Cortese vine are medium to large, often five-lobed, and possess a dark green hue. Their edges may exhibit a gentle wave. The grapes themselves are medium to large, showcasing a conical shape. The berries vary in size and display a golden-yellow to greenish tint, depending on their level of ripeness. The Cortese vine is distinguished by its adaptability to diverse soils and climates, thriving particularly well in calcareous soils. Yields may be moderate, contributing to the development of concentrated flavours in the grapes. The vine buds early in spring and typically reaches maturity in the second half of September. Over the years, wines made from Cortese grapes have garnered international acclaim. The unique flavours, freshness, and mineral notes have contributed to their esteemed reputation, extending their popularity beyond the borders of Italy.
