Description

Greco di Tufo DOCG 2022 / Villa Raiano / Campania

White wine from Italy

Villa Raiano is based in the town of San Michele di Serino in the hinterland of Naples in the southern Italian region of Campania. Irpinia is a fertile land, with a network of mountains and hills crossed by rivers and streams. The geographic and climatic conditions make this piece of the southern Apennines a unique and inimitable place for growing grapes. The small winery Villa Raiano grows only selected autochthonous grape varieties on about 27 hectares of its own vineyards. Not so well known in the rest of Europe, these wonderful wines still offer potential for new discoveries.

The Greco is an autochthonous Italian white wine variety that is mainly grown in the southern Italian region of Campania. The name "Greco" means "Greek" and indicates the possible origin of the variety from Greece. The grape variety has been known in Campania since ancient times and is now appreciated for its high quality and unique taste. Greco wines are characterized by their light-yellow color and intense aroma reminiscent of ripe fruit, citrus, honey, and nuts. They have a fresh, fruity taste with a pleasant acidity and a hint of bitter almonds on the finish. Because of their high acidity and distinct taste, they are well suited as an accompaniment to greasy or spicy dishes. Greco is produced in different styles, from dry to sweet and from still to sparkling. One of the most famous wines made from the Greco grape is the Greco di Tufo DOCG, made with fruit from the area around the town of Tufo, in the province of Avellino, known for its mineral flavour and complex structure. Greco is a demanding grape variety that thrives on rocky soil in a Mediterranean climate. Yields are low but the quality of the grapes is high, making Greco one of Italy's most prized wine varieties.

The grapes for the Greco di Tufo DOCG from Villa Raiano come from the three towns of Montefusco, Tufo and Altavilla Irpina. The vines, planted using the Guyot system, are at an average altitude of 500 to 550 m asl. on calcareous, sandy and clayey soils. The grapes are harvested manually in the first week of October and, to avoid crushing the grapes, they are quickly transported to the winery in small crates. The bunches of grapes are then subjected to a soft pressing, without destemming, to obtain the flower must. The subsequent vinification and aging on the fine lees take place entirely in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of around 16°C for four months. Finally, the finished Greco di Tufo is bottled in the second week of February after the harvest.

With its intense and compact straw yellow colour, Greco di Tufo from Campania enchants the nose with scents of green apple, jasmine, cedar, and wild honey, typical of wines grown at a certain altitude. Well-integrated mineral and menthol notes can be seen in the background. Over time, a fascinating hint of hydrocarbons develops from the primary fragrance aromas. On the palate, this Greco is dry, full, and very fresh. The acidity is restrained, and the wine is nicely balanced. The finish is long and persistent, producing a distinct sapidity.

At a recommended drinking temperature of around 10 to 12°C, the Greco di Tufo from Villa Raiano goes well with risotto dishes and white meats. Also ideal with fish, seafood, and smoked meat. After a few years of aging, the Greco is also a nice accompaniment to blue cheeses.
