Description

Magliocco Pollino Terre di Cosenza DOP 2021 / Ferrocinto / Calabria

Red wine from Italy

Tenute Ferrocinto is based in the town of Castrovillari, halfway between the cities of Potenza and Cosenza in Calabria in southern Italy. The area is also called "Conca del Re" and was known as a wine-growing landscape even before the appearance of the Romans. Surrounded by the largest Italian national parks, the vines find ideal conditions here because there are large temperature differences between day and night. The work of people in the vineyard preserves the characteristics of the terroir by working in perfect harmony with nature. In doing so, they have to make a daily choice that ultimately leads to a result that represents a perfect synthesis between centuries-old tradition and new technological achievements.

The Magliocco is a red wine variety that is cultivated in the Italian region of Calabria. In the past it was cultivated very often but has been almost forgotten and only recently rediscovered. The Magliocco is a late-ripening grape variety that is sensitive to lack of water. It can be used to make tannin-rich red wines that are easy to store.

The grapes for the Magliocco Aglianico Calabria IGP from Tenute Ferrocinto come from the Pollino area in northern Calabria and are grown at an average altitude of 500 m above sea level. The soil here is calcareous and has a high proportion of iron and magnesium. In addition, there is an exceptional microclimate with high temperature differences between day and night.

According to the ancient tradition of viticulture in the Pollino area, defoliation takes place during flowering to reduce the grape production of the plant. The work in the vineyard is accompanied by the most modern winery techniques in order to have as little invasive intervention as possible. At every stage of the work, the specificity of the vine is respected. The manual harvest then takes place relatively late in the first ten days of November. After the fruit has been gently pressed, there is a maceration, during which colour, tannins and fruit aromas are extracted from the grapes. Then the fermentation of the must begins at a controlled temperature of 24 to 28°C. Finally, the Magliocco Pollino Terre di Cosenza DOP is aged for six months in lightly toasted French oak barriques.

The Magliocco Pollino shines in the glass ruby red with garnet reflections. The bouquet is wide and generous. Notes of dried petals, macerated berries, pomegranate juice, cloves, hummus, bark, liquorice, hay, blood, and smoky aromas can be discovered. Extremely elegant in combination. On the palate, this red wine is soft, dry, and full-bodied. Its precise freshness and minerality balance the alcohol perfectly. The way through the mouth is harmonious and very long.

At a perfect drinking temperature of around 16 to 18°C, it is an excellent accompaniment to pasta with meat sauces, lasagne, red meats, and mature cheeses. In general, the food should not be too light, otherwise you will only taste a little of it. Nice also from contemplation wine.
